You sound very brave Chewie, but I would like to see your panic reaction with 5 guns pointing your head

ill take my chances. but i wouldnt run off.

if my times up, its up!

and may i also add that a guy got stopped in whitehall opposite Downing st on thurs after the failed bombs. he didnt run off did he!
Fair enough guns at your head are scary, but if they clearly shouted POLICE and he had nothing to hide, then why run? And I believe the 'wires' round his waist were in a toolbelt - the guy was an electrician from wot i've heard. I'm on the side of the police tho. If they'd have done the same thing 2 weeks ago, over 50 people would still be alive.

YA! Isolationism! That's the way to go! I love it when those waves of isolationism happen in the US! It's a low-level fever most of the time but the last time we have a full outbreak of isolationism disease, you know what happened? That's right, baby. WW2! Good stuff

Chewie, for once, was right when he said we might need to rethink our foriegn policies because we're obvious losing the battle for hearts and minds to a bunch of people who have an obscene fascination with bombs.

And if the bombers were all black and I started getting checked on the street regularly, I WOULD VERY MUCH MIND. I've been through it before (my brother and I being detained after a nearby burglary because he fit the desciption of "a black guy in a dark coat") and it was offensive and degrading.

Well in that case, dont be minding when it happens to you and you get caught up in a bomb blast because the police were too afraid of 'offending' suspected bombers. Take it on the chin!

Right... that makes great sense. Lets take racial profiling to the next level!!! Anyone who is somehow similar to the perpetrators of a crime - hell, any type of crime! - should be stopped just to make sure they haven't committed that crime or aren't planning on it in the not-too-distant future! Great idea! That's how you stop terrorism! You could use that methodology to stop petty crime, car theft, murder and other crimes too! Because the perpetrators are always out walking the streets... heck, lets just throw "them" all in jail now and get it over with

Ok, if i'm so 'stupid' as you put it tell me oh great one. How would YOU propose we stop them? By the sounds of it your happy to let them walk around bombing people just in case we offend them!

I never used the word "stupid".

If you think racial profiling is the answer, then tell me what you do next time an Englishman carries out a heinous crime? Want to know the answer? Nothing. You won't be stopping other Englishmen on the street because they're not different.

Sorry, it's just that I know how stupid it got for law-abiding Arab Americans post 9/11. Yes, many were willing to deal with the inconvenience to show their devotion to the US. In return, tens if not hundreds were detained without due process indefinitely... the vast majority of them innocent. All for the cause!

I've been the victim of racial profiling - whether it's getting stopped to check my visa & registration on the streets here in Moscow nowadays as an adult, the aforementioned incident being detained with my brother in university, or being asked to leave a record store when I was a little kid because my brother and I were just browsing.

If that's your answer, then your country is no longer free and the terrorists you fear have beaten you. If that's really how you think now, to use the cliche, the terrorists have won.

How do the police win? Good intelligence. The UK police have been remarkably good about that up until now. There's no reason they can't continue. Indiscriminate race-based dragnets aren't going to catch your terrorists.

theres no evidence of any racial profiling going on in the UK at all. if you fit the desciption of any criminal whether you are black/white/asian/whatever then you will be stopped.

you must have seen the cctv images of the people they are hunting out, thats what they are looking for.

Morbyd, i'm sure you have visited the UK and London so you will appreciate how multicultural our communities are and the police are sensitive to that and acting to try and minimise any friction between different racial groups - which is more than can be said for the sensational news services.

Tell me, you watch Sky News?

I don't think racial profiling is happening, Stuie... I was only responding to sexkitten, who appeared to be advocating that it be used. But I do watch Sky News quite often actually   (when I'm not watching CNN or BBC)

I'm in the UK several times a year so I know very well what it's like. First time I was in London in '97, I wondered where all the Brits were

I think London is the capital of the world right now... they way New York was in the 1990s. The diversity makes it interesting.

Question for Morbyd.

I do agree with you on the racial profiling thing, ie not all bearded yorkshiremen are psychotic sex killers, not all american homosexual loners are canibals, and not all muslims are terrorists.

On the subject of intelligence, Yes we brits are good at it, as are your countrymen, and it seems that they are gradually getting more powers in what they can listen to, eg phonecalls, emails etc. Now im ok with this as I think if you have nowt to hide then you have nowt to fear, do you agree?? I watched a tv programme the other night and it was fascinating, basically, if they suspect you they can tap into every email you send & recieve from wherever. It also showed that woman in the US who cons extremists by letting them think she is one, then sets em up for the feds, she got one guy who was about to go to iraq with the us military and he was trading blueprints for the tanks.

Even having nothing to hide I would go really furious if the governement try to listen my phonecalls or emails. It means they are cutting my rights and it's something it mus not be allowed :!:

wouldnt suprise me if they're prob are already listening in at the moment.

Sorry syl, I disagree completely, and i doubt very much if they would read your emails, unless you were emailing suspected terrorists, so don't worry, Pepe will never find out about you and the milkman ;)

I was sure you would disagree

Again, I don't have anything to hide (except the milkman   ) but if spanish governement start hearing phonecalls or reading emails (and as chewie said they are probably doing it right now) means they are cutting my right of intimacy and private life.
I don't think that it has to see with having something to hide, it has to see with your rights being cutted. Nobody cares about it? 8O

i think the safety of the community as a whole is a lot more important than our personal privacy.

if you want to blame someone, blame the people who are making this necessary to tap phones/read emails etc... and its not the police, nor the security services, but the nutters who blow up people.
