Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham

If you're here for a couple of days over a weekend, go to The Ouseburn on Friday night. It's about half a mile from Newcastle city centre. Start off in The Tanners then walk down to The Ship & The Cluny (opposite each other), maybe The Cumberland then The Free Trade and The Tyne. These are 'proper' pubs but it's a good route and gets a mixed crowd. From The Tyne you can walk back along to the Pitcher & Piano for something a bit livelier & later.

Pubs during the day in Newcastle city centre are Tilley's, The Forth & The Town Wall. Decent food and pints.

Have a walk along the Quayside during the day. Cross over the river on the Millennium Bridge and go into the BALTIC. Even if you're not into art it's worth going to the top and having a look up the river from the viewing platform. From there you can walk to The Sage for a look inside & it's only back across the Tyne bridge to the city centre again. If Newcastle are playing at home you can usually get tickets and it's always an experience.

If you want to get amongst it on the Saturday night the Central Station area is probably the best bet. Not my thing but it'll undoubtedly be jumping. Busy bars playing commercial house full of lads in v-neck All Saints t-shirts/elasticated jeans and orange girls. The main ones are Revolution, Madam Koos, Floritas, Perdu & Bijoux. Tokyo was decent but I've not been around that area for years so don't know what it's like now. We tend to go to Popolo, Alvinos and No 28 but these are only small places and it can be hard getting in, even for locals, if there's more than four of five in a group.

It's up to you, but I'd avoid The Quayside (very quiet these days), The Bigg Market (just not very nice) or The Gate (take a gum-shield).

For food, Stowell Street is great for Chinese, Electric East - used to be Barn Asia - does amazing pan-Asian food (my mate's place so tip well!!) or Little Saigon for authentic Vietnamese. If there's something specific you want let me know & I'll point you in the right direction as we eat out in Newcastle a lot.

Phew! feel like I've had a night out after writing that. The above is just my opinion, others might not agree :)

Cosmic Ballroom in Newcastle... anyone been?

see my previous post ....

its goodif your on the right side of 35, everyone seems to be under that age - music is pretty good and the crowd are really up for it...

Its a funny old club tho - layout is a bit ****ty :spank:

Any other cities we should be considering for good clubbing options?

Leeds has some decent clubs (my two favs);

Backs to basics (moved to a new venue, was first night last saturday, great crowd)

Mint club

There are many other venues, I am only a few times per year man these days and am not up to date with other clubs atm. Other Leeds folks could prob give a better overview, crispy duck would give a detailed low down on what's hot and not.

Also some decent pre clubbing bars etc

Personally? i would sack off Newcastle and go to Leeds - Newcastle isnt as good as it used to be to be fair - but then again it could be cos I am getting older and just dont feel the love anymore - it seems the general population of every club night is totally muntered on beer or ket and its just not my bag man :lol:

^^ plenty of shops if memory serves (always wonder if there's really more disposable income in the North !) .. but it's been a while

Still might be worth thinking about London :

Friday 9th : Warm w/Nick Hoeppner @ Plastic People - http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?327805

or this looks pretty decent too - not often you get Midland playing in London : http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?326054

I went to Weekend Circuit @ Basing House a couple of weeks ago or thereabouts - James What was OK bar some very dodgy mixing, but crowd was a bit "young" for me  http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?316473

Saturday there are a few good nights too :

Cocoon Heroes Warehouse Party : http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?322656 (and use this for discount tickets http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?330429 )

M.A.N.D.Y. : http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?332873

BPitch Control night : http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?316246

Pick of the bunch for our age group probably Clockwork Orange reunion (can't remember if it all goes back that far for you) .. but I doubt you'd have much hope of getting tickets, unless someone connected got you a G/L. http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?324796

Fabric lineup not out yet and Ministry is Fanciulli vs Cadenza - http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?332657

... and a nice after-party on Sunday afternoon to follow on from one of the morning ones : http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?331003

Plenty of clubbing to be done if you want it !!

What's Leeds like apart from the clubbing? May try and talk my mate into that instead.

Leeds has developed into a really decent city for a night out, lots of different areas to suit all tastes, lots of decent eating places and an assortment of hotels from budget etap upwards. You could do spit and sawdust pubs all night or champagne bars, spoiled for choice, twenty years ago there wouldn't have been a bottle of champagne anywhere in town!! The daytime shopping is also very good with loads of decent shops. I don't think there is a great deal in the way of arty type stuff to see in Leeds but others might correct me. York is a short train round trip on the train for a real cultural experience through the daytime. Back to Leeds, you could hop on a bus for a trip to Elland Road, hurl abuse and throw a few stones at Ken Bates to get into the Leeds spirit:lol:

Re: Above post, Leeds City Armouries is well worth a look to see how warfare has developed from the stone-age until modern times. Fascinating stuff! There are also loads of tiny independent cinemas dotted all over the city (all owned by one bloke apparently) if you fancy some culture.

Anyone else have thoughts on that venue and whether it'll be a good night?

My mate wants to go someplace new for definite, so not London or Glasgow. Think Newcastle or Leeds are the most likely places now.

World Headquarters in Newcastle also been mentioned to me.

WHQ is a good venue - I go every Easter for the Forensic Records Party - always a cracking night with like minded people... Legends was used by Shindig for a good while when they Riverside closed down for refurb - it did a few monthly nights there and got some good reviews from the venue side - also, you will get older more "experienced" shall we say clubbers rather than Cosmic or Digital....

Are zimmers allowed inside?

Looks like the big March weekend is now going to have to be cancelled, but hopefully we'll get something sorted for later in the year.

I hope so - at the very least a "resting" area for sitting down for intervals - these knee and hip joints arent what they used to be....

actually glad you mentioned WHQ earlier, I went on the site and decided i am going on 8th March :)
