'New' Ibiza

Think it's just symptomatic of the expansion in popularity of EDM generally to take in a demographic which used to target other soundtracks (Tech House has been the real victim of the vibe-killer crowd).

There are only so many bigger clubs to go to in Ibiza and 'posey party people' want to go to famous, glamorous and expensive places (check !)... or those where their idols are playing and so 'must be cool'. Jamie Jones (stereotypically representing, well, a lot of people know exactly what I mean) is probably largely responsible for the surge in "wannabes" and w*nkers (for want of a better way of putting it) at DC-10, pushing the boundary you refer to. He and others like him just attract them like vampires to a jugular vein.

You find exactly the same thing going on in London. So one is just pushed back to smaller headliners, private parties & small venues in order to find the sort of vibe you're talking about.. and away from anything with the words Crosstown, Visionquest or Hot Natured on the lineup (possibly 'trance' too - haven't been to a trance night in years - nor really any "disco" nights to comment on !). 'Cocoon' has unfortunately fallen victim to the same sort of thing owing to brand power.

Nail on the head.

my last visit to pdb looked like a fair few of the cast were already there!

Very w*nky crowd in pdb last year, noticed it more in September than July, strangely...

Evidence. A great video, but the DC10 scenes sum it up for me.

Really great vid - thanks for posting.

The DC-10 part looks nothing like ye olde days though.

The club looks really posh now (nicely so - like the fancy looking speakers).

The crowd looks a bit w@nky though - lots of clubby types facing forwards and posing with camera phones.

DC-10 was always a great combination of grit and glamour, i.e. it had its own brand of pretentiousness but it still had quite a crusty feel to it. This lot look like a bunch of Mixmag readers/teds. (oh dear showing my age now - what's the equivalent these days, Resident Advisor?)

Still hankering for a bit of sun on me chops though.

Ahh ... I could go on about the loss of appreciation of natural beauty and the adulation of plastic people in the the present day ... which has spilt into the clubbing world as any other ... but the photos tell a story far better than I can articulate :

I've been going to Ibiza since '97 and had both good nights and bad. I've had some amazing times at nights others would turn their noses up at. Fantastic times at Clockwork Orange and UFO at Es Paradis, my favourite night of all time was in Tonic at Eden (Brandon Block and Alex P's night), my worst night was at Pacha, so forgettable I can't even remember the name of it. The thing that has struck me over the years is that it's the people you're with rather than the people around that can make a fairly average night into an amazing one.

True.

Tbh one of my favourite nights out in ibiza was at cream surrounded by cyber Italian ravers. Music was not to my taste but i was too busy being utterly smashed to really give a ****. Tried tirry's coco loco that night.

During 15 years of Holidaying in Ibiza,I have not witnessed a fight in San Antonio and I would have stayed there a lot as it is one of my favourite places to stay on the Island.

Have to agree with bez on that. The only fights i ever saw in ibiza was the famous flyer and poster battles back in the early 90`s when cream and all the UK clubs started doing nights on the island.Guys going around taking down or covering posters for rival nights.Vans going around with guys tooled up with sellotape and a tight roll of posters at 10am in the morning.Wild times

plenty of good posts on this thread.. kimajy's especially.. Lots of you been playing in ibiza for a good few years and i guess seeing some of the good and bad changes. Like i said in a previous post each to their own and in no way would i be poking fun at them for their likes and tastes. However i do believe Ibiza's clientele has changed and ibiza has had to change with it.. commercialism is at saturation point.. The burning question is will the ibiza ever return to its former its glory (imho) or is it simply not needed anymore..

I cant say i'm experienced enough to comment on the old vibes and the new vibes really. I agree about cocoon going commercial though, my first time there in 2008 it was pure techno and the terrace(what me and a mate thought was supposed to be a chill out area :D) even harder on the brain but the crowd was amazing. No one really taking pics or videos I seem to be at one with the crowd. It was still immense going in Aug but I did notice a difference in the type of person going. Saw a guy in a baseball cap in space on his dancing his nut off which was funny, never expected that :D
At the end of the day I missed the old times and as much as the vids do look amazing I will just keep going to Ibiza while I enjoy it. If the ponce brigade annoys me too much I will go elsewhere.
