here we go again…2008 ibiza opening parties reviews! (continuous)

Well here we are again. It’s mid may and everyone (who likes clubbing, of course) is looking forward to the opening parties. The big bang is still two weeks away, but slowly and steadily things are starting up in Ibiza. So from now on, and until the last party had its opening night, reviews will be added. From me, surely from dan as well and hopefully also from a lot of other people sharing their experiences – everybody feel free to add your reviews!

I’ll start with some short reviews of a few parties we already went…just before the big things get going, we thought we’d hit some smaller parties, including venues we probably won’t be going lots during the summer once the season’s on…

Basic elements at pacha – wed, may 14
Not a huge thing, but still worth a few lines. First, because it was the first time this season we actually entered a club in ibiza and second, because we liked the party! When we got there (around two), they just opened the main floor (before, it had just been the global room and the bar on the left before entering the main room). And music-wise, it was the first time I’ve heard real minimal and techy stuff at pacha! Nano vergel, hector avila and then pig & dan from cocoon played out great sets! Cool and strange at the same time to hear a few of last summer’s dc10-smashers in pacha main floor!

Cocoon winter residency at blu – fri, may 16
The last cocoon party of their winter series at blu in figueretas (at least I haven’t heard of another one until cocoon at amnesia starts…?). It was nacho capella’s b-day (amnesia’s musical director) and as the island is slowly flooded by season people, we expected the smallish club to be busy soon. and we weren’t wrong, by 3am the party was in full swing. Amnesia resident dj Mar-T played a solid set and after him it was Dan Ghenacia (whom you’ll be able to catch at DC10 various Mondays this summer) who hit the decks. We didn’t last very long though, we’re not used to the Ibiza rhythm yet and my knee (which is still a bit sore from surgery only a few weeks ago) told me it might be better to have an easy season start when it comes to dancing…

Reunion party at underground – sat, may 17
Yes, it was a reunion party. Lots of familiar faces in this lovely venue! And now it’s just one more week that they’re opened only on Fridays, as far as I’ve heard they will be open mon – sat from june onwards.

so did anyone go to es paradis opening or to one of the parties in eden? or to soldiers at el divino?

Full moon party at km5 / salvacion opening party at el divino – tue, may 20
Finally, after a week of almost constant bad weather, sun came back to Ibiza yesterday. So everybody (who was able to) spent the day outside and enjoyed this bluebird day 8)

When night fell, full moon came out. Really nice with the cloudless sky. I tried to take some pictures, but they’re all sh*t…
So with the nice weather coming back, also our stamina for some night-time activity returned. We first headed to KM5 for their full moon party. I didn’t expect it to be really busy as it’s still May and I wasn’t wrong (but these full moon nights get really busy during the season). But still we liked it, Graham Sahara playing his house stuff, us having a drink, meeting known and new faces.

At around two we headed to El Divino then for the opening night of Salvacion. Cesar Del Rio, Alex Miles & David Herrera were on the line up and El Divino was nicely busy (although far away from packed). Music wise, it was a house dish, stuffed with electro and spiced with a lot of hits such as eurythmic’s sweet dreams, last year’s genesis from pryda and more. An enjoyable night and also here, lots of socialising on the outside terrace (my fave bit of el divino anyway, yesterday night especially nice with the full moon over the Ibiza town bay) and a bit of dancing…have to get my knee ready for the opening marathon!

so...now the openings are approaching fast. space is already getting their parking area floor ready and i've heard a rumour privilege is having an exceptional opening hour license for their opening party on saturday so they can stay open much later than till 6am (we'll see if that's true). but last night, we went out again, here:

when we had fought our way through the hard rain and arrived at pacha at around two, the main floor was getting busy. music wise, it was something between dc10 and pacha. not exactly minimal, but still with an underground feel to it. some nice tunes, again many known faces and my knee slowly getting better (HAS to be ready by friday). well...i am looking forward to go to circoloco at dc10 again, because the circoloco party last night at pacha unfortunately lacked a bit of atmosphere. yesss, bring on the openings now, enough of pre-opening-warm-up-getting-ready stuff

bora bora opening party - fri, may 30

it's always impressive how drastically playa d'en bossa and san antonio change just a day or two before the openings. during the whole month of may, both these tourist resorts are nicely quiet and still, there are already some tourists around, families and elderly people mainly. and then - on the thursday and friday before the opening weekend - all the clubbers come back with a big BANG. after another winter, people have such a lot of stamina to dance, party and have a good time here. rental cars almost hopping by with the bass and the volume on the max, the last workers arrive and there's a smile in everybody's face who likes clubbing...it's a special moment for me as well, i had a really quiet winter, i've seen the island still quiet during the last few weeks and yet, now that the clubbing locura starts again, my heart beats just a few bpm faster than before...

so now BORA BORA is officially open again. and in full swing!

so...here's the picture we all know, which is back on the island now...lots of british and german present...some of them already with their first sunburn after a few hours in the sun...then, of course, many lovely spanish peeps doing their botellon outside bb and generally, a respectable lot of people already mingling around wide-eyed...

IBIZA 2008 SUMMER SEASON'S FINALLY HERE!!! :D  8)

When time did BB open for the opening party? Did you see a big police presence this year after all the **** that happened at the start of last season?

well, as bora bora is also a restaurant, they're always open by noontime for lunch. music from early afternoon onwards with things picking up really at around 4pm...no changes compared to earlier years (only that people aren't allowed to dance on tables anymore, but that's news from 2007).

not yet. but i definitely expect to see a lot of policia and guardia civil around during the next days - as always for the opening parties.

pure pacha opening party - fri, may 30

after my visit to bora bora (see above), i first fueled up with pasta and then drove into ibiza town. walked to lola's, where supermartxe had a party (from end of june fridays at privilege). i was early and things just really started. so i changed directions and - after bumping in friends on the street - went to grial for a pre-pacha-drink. such a nice location - and the bar staff is the loveliest in ibiza town. definitely recommended. ah, and nano vergel & friends were playing, so i shouldn't forget to say the music was muy bien as well!

then i made my way to pacha and entered short after 2am. hmmm...isn't pacha well-known for kicking off quite late? not this night. when i arrived, the main dance floor was already in full swing and nearly packed! ok, pure pacha opening was the only big thing going on that night, but still, i was quite (pleasantly) surprised to see pacha so busy that early! sander kleinenberg was playing in the main floor and oooooh what a great set he delievered!!! liked it lots! i definitely will be back for more SK this summer...

then i suddenly bumped into other people i hadn't seen for a while. so we went up to funky room for a bit, this one was nicely busy and comfy to dance and chat. later, i dragged the gang up to the roof terrace for some fresh air. i think i'd love pacha much less if there wasn't this terrace.

when we made our way back into the main room, it was already after 4am and sebastian ingrosso & steve angello were playing. they rocked the hell out of the main room, i seldom have heard such banging stuff in pacha!

conclusion - pure pacha is still a winner, even without pete tong. i'm sure as soon as tong's new wonderland party at eden begins, many will wander there and the night will be a success. but i'm totally convinced pacha will stay as busy as before on friday nights...it's just pure pacha!

Did he play a VJ set with the screens at Pacha? I saw him recently and they were awesome! Really brought his set to life!

Privilege opening, sat may 31

When we arrived short after 2am, there was an impressive queue in front of privilege. So it took us a while to get in and once we were in, I first took a walk through the whole main floor and cocoloco room to see…errr…HEAR what the improved soundsystem sounds like. There is definitely a difference to last year, the sound’s generally much more powerful, much more balanced and you don’t get no echos anymore! YAY! Well done privi! :D Else news from Privilege: the pool is still there, but slightly renovated, there’s no more signs of “KU” anymore… :(

By 3am, both the main floor and cocoloco room were really busy. not rammed, but with a really good atmosphere everywhere. Audiofly were playing in the main room, a great powerful set between minimal and techhouse stuff while the monza crew was hosting the cocoloco room during all the night. I met a lot of people there again and we also had something like a spotlight meetup from the german forums. Hi guys! 8)

At about 4am, John Acquaviva got on the decks in the main floor and he took the energy even higher. I really like his full-on tec-elec style for some peak time business. And the crowd also loved it. Pity he’s not doing any more Ibiza dates this summer (as far as I know). The dancers’ shows also were great, especially the ones from the Supermartxe crew which are easily comparable to the Matinée dancers. Mauro Picotto only started playing at about 5:30am and I left at around 6am when Privi was still in full swing, so I knew there’s no way they’d close before 7am. The next day, friends (who stayed till the end) told me the fiesta continued till after 10am in the cocoloco room! So the rumour I had heard about having an exceptional license to stay open later for the opening was true. I’ve heard the same rumour for the amnesia opening next Saturday as well by the way!

Space Opening, sun june 1st

While it had rained through Saturday night, when I got up on Sunday around lunchtime, the sun was out and when I turned on the radio and got the first few beats live from space opening, I already began dancing in the shower…can a clubbers day begin any better? So when everyone was ready and we had chupitos at my HQ, we walked to space…great to hit that place again! The queues weren’t bad really, we arrived at around 4pm and were in in less than 10minutes! Props to space for such a smooth handling, much appreciated. The guardia civil was present as always on the car park and randomly searched people. Same as every year!

319889865.jpg

Once we were in, we headed directly to the flight club area (aka car park) and enjoyed wally lopez’ set, which we liked a lot. Dancing out in the sunshine, happy faces, great fresh new music…it’s just good to be here again! And it didn’t take long until the first classic was dropped – knights of the jaguar. In the following hours, we switched a lot between the car park, the sunset terrace and the premier etage.
We met a lot of people, danced, enjoyed the atmosphere and generally had a blast…jon Ulysses’ appearance on the sunset terrace was really good this year – and his set peaked with Pryda’s “pjanoo” (which wasn’t played only by him this day). This will be a signature we love Sunday evening tune this summer as already predicted by a many on here!

On premier etage, my fave voice of Ibiza Global Radio – Jose Maria Ramon – was playing a great set as well. I like this roof terrace more and more…always a good atmosphere and great to meet people (If they ever turn up, haha).

One track that’s played a lot on IGR at the mo’ is “pipes n sneakers” by Jay shepheard and JMR also dropped this one…cool! Here’s a link to a sample…very groovy laidback stuff http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF313650-01-02-01.mp3 - perfect for a sunny afternoon on premier etage!

here's Jose Maria Ramon, hard at work ;)
319889870.jpg

Then back to the car park for a bit of dj oliver.
319889869.jpg

There we also bumped into more people we knew and they were part of a wedding, which had taken place earlier on the same day in Ibiza. Wedding afterparty everyone together at Space opening? Oh yes! (the bride was georgeous by the way, and everone was wearing white but comfy clothes – brilliant!) :D:D:D

Onwards through the masses, back to the sunset terrace, where the matinée guys were dropping great terrace music like their last year’s signature track “shine on me” and the everlasting “sweet dreams”. Can you feel the energy of that place?
319889871.jpg

We also catched a bit of Oscar Colorado’s set in the main room (tribal stuff!), said hi to DJ Mikki in Caja Roja (always recommendable!), saw Tom Novy taking control over the decks on the sunset terrace, and then went back to the car park one final time to enjoy Steve Lawler’s flight club area closing set….of course including Jaydee’s “plastic dreams” :D

So you know the deal, once the car park and the sunset terrace close, it gets incredibly busy in the remaining areas. I had known from the start I won’t be able to stay through till the end and so we just continued for two more hours, found a place inside the discoteca and closed our space opening session with Sasha’s set…which I simply loved. Looking back, I only noticed now that I completely missed the main terrace this day! But ah well, there will be enough other possibilities to stomp that yard this season…

Conclusion – great opening party, perfect weather, colourful and multilingual people, many funny stories and situations – brilliant! 8) Although, if I had to choose between space opening and space closing, I’d go for space closing. Simply because it’s just on another emotional level. All the summer hits are known already, get banged out one last time and everyone parties like it’s the last ever party they do…
But nevertheless, space opening is still a must-do if you’re on the island by that date!

DC10 Opening, mon june 2nd

I had to get up early-ish this morning and so felt just a bit tired after yesterday’s 10hours nonstop dancing marathon. But at least we did a wise thing, we all met up for a delicious fish and seafood lunch at one of our fave spots, somewhere by the sea at the far end of talamanca bay…

Stuffed and ready to go, we drove to dc10 mid-afternoon. Parking was a bit of an adventure, because we got thoroughly searched by the guardia civil. I must say though, they were friendly and far from rude or anything like that. those guys are only doing their jobs and I honestly think some of them really would have preferred dancing their asses off instead of inspecting other people’s underwear…but anyway!

So in the end, we just got in short before 5pm. But that was perfect like that, it wasn’t too rammed then yet and like this, we found a great spot to dance. Dc10 news 2008? Already told ya, the bar outside in the garden is now permanent – great to have a drink out in the fresh air (no music though!). Else? All I say is “we’re all living in a yellow submarine”
319890084.jpg

Arpiar (Raresh, Pedro, Rhadoo) were doing a triple back2back 3 hours set which went off properly on the terrace. When at 7:30pm Matthias Tanzmann took over, dc10 was rammed to the rafters…but that’s no news, no? Loved MT’s set, much less though Tania Vulcano’s who played afterwards. Finally, at 11pm, Luciano played the last set on the terrace and it was as brilliant as ever! The terrace closed at 1:30am while things inside went on till after 3am. Although I liked the music inside as well, I just don’t like dc10 inside that much and after another 10hrs dancing non-stop I thought I’d call it a day.

Conclusion – sorry we’re…
319890074.jpg

‘nuff said!

Ah, and my knee’s doing well – yay!!!! :D

As usual, I'm interested in the opening party of the Pacha Champagne Girls. I miss the terrace!!

Thats a shame...:( They are erasing the clubs history! I wish someone would take it over and change it back!

One question- Did they give pass outs in Space?
