I've just come back from an amazing 10 days on the island, the only downside was Mambo, I used to love the place the relaxed chilled vibe, the old hammocks in the 90's etc. But how times have changed. For a number of years me and the wife go for the first sunset of each holiday and enjoy a bottle of champagne on the rocks and take in the whole vibe of Calo Des Moro enjoying the surroundings and the upbeat nature of the crowd, this year was no different, we had a great night meeting up with friends who are on the island for the season, watching the fire shows, taking in the SHM pre-party, we were ready for a great 10 days. After the pre-party ended we were chilling on the rocks a group of friends enjoying each others company having a laugh anticipating the great night to come, when all of a sudden we were showered with stale ale and broken glass as the Mambo staff cleaned up the beach/rock area in front of the steps, the was no apology when we complained about their abrasiveness, we were just called a "bunch of skanks" and told to "go and drink in a real bar not on the beach you scallies", bare in mind my wife and I are 31 and 34 respectivley and certainly not scallies. We asked to speak to the manager and were told that the person we were speaking to was the manager and had been for "13 years" woopdy ****ing doo...we were then surrounded by "security" who backed off a bit when they realised they weren't dealing with dickheads and might have had a problem on their hands had the tried anything silly. The attitude of the manageress was disgusting we explained that we had cleaned up after ourselves and even put other peoples rubbish in the bin only to abused and called "skanks" again...rather than spoil our night anymore we decided to move on.

We usually spend a number of nights of our holiday each year at Mambo and spend a large amount of money in the bar, I'm glad to say that this year I didn't spend a single penny in there. We returned on our last night to be greeted by the funniest sight of our holiday, a door/beachman telling people they couldn't drink on the rocks outside Mambo, I guess they now own the rocks? Haha. He was telling everybody who had their own carryout they had to drink it the otherside of the boardwalk Del Mar side:spank: even going as far as to tell a group of friends who had purchased cocktails from Mambo to drimk them Del Mar side because one of their friends had a bottle Kas limon:oops:...it was embarrassing to watch the fella telling families with children in pushchairs that they couldn't enjoy one of the great sights of the world on "Mambo's Rock's" because thay hadn't bought anything from the bar and don't get me started on the dickhead glass collector who was acting the tough guy with his new found hardman status directing people from the rocks with his new hard man Terminator sunglasses wearing mate....

I think Mambo forget that people are attracted to the area by the crowds who sit and cheer the sunsets each night outside their bar, they are not losing any money as this has gone on for as long as I can remember, their bar is full every night anyway regardless, perhaps they are getting even more greedy? I hear they had a visit from the Enviromental Police, if this is the case perhaps a few more bins and polite signs asking people to dispose of their rubbish when they are leaving is the answer not the embarrassing sunburned Terminator wannabe that thay obviously think is the answer.

R.I.P. Cafe Mambo.

They are trying to move people off of the beach in front of Mambo? I would tell them to f**k off and refuse to budge

Yes they are mate, I can see there being a bit of trouble there over the summer if they tell the wrong group of people what they can and can't do, it only takes a big stag do or a few unsavoury characters to not comply and they'll have a major kick off on their hands. It was cringe worthy to watch, they were blatantly laughing in the faces of families telling them they couldn't drink or sit on their rocks, fair enough on the steps but the rocks, get a ****ing grip.

It's not that got up and moved they were physically stopped from going on the rocks/beachfront in the first place.

I was at the very first opening party of Mambo and have returned there most years since. It was very local and Spanish when it opened first and in the management of the same team that run Bay Bar now. It reflected what was good about Ibiza, its local hospitality, people, good food and music.

It then became a victim of its own success pandering to the tourist and DJ market and upping the price of its drinks. Then around 2004 the old management moved on, along with some of the staff that stayed loyal to the old team.

Mambo gradually started to loose its friendly welcome and became commercially driven as they cashed in on the Tourist market. It became a tourist bar rather than a local one. It wanted to be a mini Pacha.

Its now a different place, I still go back and say hello to Javier and his genial family, but thats the only reason. Like an ex girlfriend, its moved on and hanging around in social circles that I do not feel comfortable with anymore.

But, to a younger guy with a penchant for stylish, trendy and upwardly mobile girls its always going to remain popular and a place to be seen.

totally agree with Bez.Used to love it in the late 90s, totally relaxed vibe with sunloungers etc just in front, some great days there. i think the change became very noticeable when they introduced the decking as the public pathway was paved. I remember when tong was broadcasting ES they wouldnt allow us to sit unless we bought a bottle. This heavy handedness as explained by the OP is totally OTT,and i hope its a temporary overreaction to a clampdown by the environmental body. In fairness to Mambo they do provide bins and i have seen signs saying drinks are ok on the rocks but not allowed if you sit on their steps. which i guess is fair enough.

Yeah I agree, which is probably the only thing I'd agree with you on judging by your name :D One of the best nights of me life there coming up off Tequilla Sunrises in 97 sat on the beach before heading off to Manumission.
It's still a boss little bar, but they have lost what it was all about in the first place, it was the alternative to the ponciness of Del Mar if you like, but I'd sooner spend me money in Del Mar now.
The thing that pissed us off the most was that she heard our accents and went down the scally route straight away.

We all preferred the 'old days' 8)

 at report - sounds like Mambo manageress was having a very bad day and maybe on the receiving end of some internal s**t being passed on - she's always been really nice to me - but no excuse for talking to or treating anyone like that if this is what happened.

Very true re Mambo being full every Sunset anyway - overcrowded actually at times - so be 8), Mambo. It's Cafe del Mar that always seems to be empty bar a few tourists with out-of-date guidebooks (I'm talking mainly shoulder season) although they do sometimes have some good music in there so that's a shame. It's all so commercialised, only just still something I want to do, and that's more down to all the people gathering and promenading here rather than Mambo or any other bar of itself. If there were no 'rock' and 'step' people I probably wouldn't bother going to Sunset Strip at all, and I do spend money on food and drink in all the bars there, both in the day and around Sunset.

Personally I think the 'rock people' actually add to the whole experience for those in Mambo's bayside table zone. I've been equally happy sitting at their tables with a nice cocktail, with all the people on the rocks around, as being a mellow 'rock person' with a BYOB. Depeds on mood of the day and whether s**t music is being played that I'm trying to get away from... ;) (too much of that also these days) :(

Maybe Mambo paymasters feel the 'commoners' on the rocks are spoiling the "vibe" for the hallowed few table groups on "classier" nights than an evening on the rocks :)lol::lol::lol: - how many raucous birthday groups / hen parties in angel wings / etc etc in Mambo and Savannah ??????) Or maybe they are just plain sick and tired of clearing up and disposing of litter  in which case 'rock people' just need to be responsible and take their empties away ?

Are there politics associated with the 'noise conviction' hoo-ha at play somewhere here :?: only a matter of time now before a formal complaint re rights of use of public rocks is made and this issue blows up into a full-on island ding-dong ? :(

All very uncool indeed .. if Mambo's rocks become 'out of bounds', next thing is we'll have Ushuaia Beach Hotel being granted unilateral power to "dissuade" anyone from occupying the PDB beach in front of their hotel (unless they buy an 18Euro token, wear a wrist-band and Phat Pants and queue for 25minutes to be served the wrong drink..) and where will it all end ?

Yeah 8) - the crowd always looks much happier in there too for some reason - wonder why ?:)

Can I be pedantic? Cala Des Moro is around the corner and not where Mambo is on the sunset strip. The Budha Bar is in Cala Des Moro - happy to help!

Is it the Buddha bar or the Golden Buddha bar, I tried googling it, but it only shows me the Golden Buddha bar ???

Last year me and my girlfriend were drinking wine on the rocks outside mambo and when I went to use the mambos toilet I was stopped at the door because I didnt buy a drink in there. Just seems so petty considering the amount of money id spent in the place the two weeks I was there. We were only drinkin on the rocks because we were running low of cash.

The same happened to me last year. During Roger Sanchez playin @ Mambo I went inside to checkout whats going on in there. A bodyguard stopped me and told me that either I buy something at the bar or I have to leave quickly. The whole atitude was fu****ed up!
In 2008 it wasn`t a problem to stand just behind the DJ and have a look...
