DJ Top 100 2012

This popped into my facebook feed this morning. (I'm sure Ben will post the full thing.)

1.Armin van Buuren
2.Tiesto
3.Avicii
4.David Guetta
5.DeadMau5
6.Hardwell
7.Dash Berlin
8.Above & Beyond
9.Afrojack
10.Skrillex

I know we've already said it, but what a farce.

Dash Berlin and Above & Beyond shouldn't even be in a Top 20 trance list at the moment on current performance. And a man who has repeatedly told the world that he is not a DJ and belittled DJing as an art is apparently the 5th best DJ in the world. It's almost hilarious.

And on that note - I'm off to Manchester to see the guy sitting at the top of that list.

Avicii was the worst DJ I saw in 5 months in Ibiza this summer and he still made it to number 3!

I don't know why people still get offended or annoyed at these DJ polls anymore. Everybody knows the score - they are popularity contests, and nothing else.

It's no different to every idiot up and down the country being given the right to vote in a general election or referendum.

Just accept it for what it is. For me, it means v.little.

I could have told you it'd be either Armin, Tiesto or Guetta with Skrillex, Deadmau5 up there and the rest of the Top 10 filled with Trance also-rans. Avicii & Hardwell being so high are a minor (and unenthused) surprise, but given the exposure Avicii has had in the past 18 months, particular Stateside, no real surprise.

Lets face it, rightly or wrongly, Trance fans are passionately loyal. I almost get the feeling that they vote for Armin not just because he's actually their favourite DJ, but because they'd just rather see a Trance DJ win than a non-Trance DJ.

^ Yeah, most polls are pretty sh!t and boring. I used to love polls, but you can bet it'll always be the same lowest-denominator crap that will rise to the top.

It would be a good idea to take an equal amount of music producers and djs from every genre (those who are at the top of their game) make a panel and ask them to create a top 100. Then it would be a more accurate and fair list

What is intersting is the apparent popularity of Hardstyle djs/producers.

Lets face it, rightly or wrongly, Trance fans are passionately loyal. I almost get the feeling that they vote for Armin not just because he's actually their favourite DJ, but because they'd just rather see a Trance DJ win than a non-Trance DJ.

Yeah, Armin's success in this kind of thing is really down to the fact that within trance music, the appreciation for his technical level and consistency is almost universal. Pretty much every single trance fan voting would (with the exception of the very limited '140 only' brigade) have had him in their Top 5, more than half as their number 1, I'd say.

I don't know why people still get offended or annoyed at these DJ polls anymore. Everybody knows the score - they are popularity contests, and nothing else.

For me, it's just that with every year that passes this list seems to be taken more and more seriously by the wider public as an actual barometer of who are the best DJs. And I also hear it gives certain artists a real 'lift' in terms of their ability to get big bookings, which is why the spam involved with the voting process is getting so ridiculous. It just heightens the opportunity for the scene to be diluted by trendy "here today, gone tomorrow" types rather than actual legends.

It certainly helps to add a few zeroes to their booking fee.

All that needs to happen if for an established brand or institution from within the scene to compile their own, alternative Awards based on more objective factors - whether that be a panel of 'experts' etc. or whatever.

Trouble is, you can never keep everybody happy.

There will always be people who agree / disagree in accordance with their own tastes. While I don't agree that Armin, Tiesto or Guetta should be heading the pack, I can quite understand why they are.

Perhaps what the DJ Mag's poll needs a re-brand more than anything to reflect what the accolade actually stands for.

Alternatively, split the award into specific genres, so each DJ in their field is recognised. Not so sure I like that idea either tbh. I think the whole concept of pigeon-holing by genre is both obsolete and unwanted given the diversity of music and cross-referencing of styles in the modern age.

Btw, wait until Cowell starts this Decks Factor malarky, and see what joe public deems to be a "DJ" then! *shivers*

Absolutely agree.

is this an actual thing? I always assumed it was a joke!

The idea is in development. Whether it actually happens, we can but pray it does not.

It is therefore both an actual thing, and also a joke!

Edit: I presume it won't actually be called 'Decks Factor'... then again, I wouldn't entirely rule it out either!

I'll give the best 5 sets I've seen in the past year....
1. Davide Squillace (dc10 & Circus)
2. Joris Voorn (Circus)
3. Adam Beyer (Circus)
4. Catz n Dogz (Circus, Liverpool & Space, Ibiza)
5. Carl Cox (house set at dc10)

Locodice at whp and Cocoon in the Park is worth a mention too. As is Zabiela at Store St whp and Danny Daze at Sankeys, Ibiza.

In my opinion, the best DJs/producers at the moment
1. Richie Hawtin
2. Luciano
3. Maya Jane Coles
4. Locodice
5. Hot Natured

There is not one DJ in that list i would want to see!

Quite happy with Armin being number 1 again. He's NEVER disappointed me anytime I've seen him over the past 10 years and that can't be said for any of the others. Even my once beloved Above and Beyond have gone right down the pan at the moment :)

To be honest though who actually votes in these things though. It's not representative of clubbers in general just a small proportion who are likely to vote.

Likewise when Sankeys got voted number 1 club in the world. Don't make me laugh, they just did a massive campaign to get votes. I live in Manchester and almost every person I know fookin hates the place with a passion.

the 'new' sankeys? or wwere people always a bit sceptical when it was sankeys soap (is it in a different building?, or have i got that wrong & they are still in the same location?)

i've never been in the place, was toying with the idea of coming back down for another WHP trip in december and going to sankeys on the friday, make a weekend of it.

whats the best manc club then?
