Is it indoor thing? If so is it well ventilated? (Just saw beer garden, but I guess you have to go inside at times for toilets or if it's bad weather?)

I'd be very mindful of fomite transmission through surfaces, and your drunk friends trying to kiss you as they say "you're my best mate" ?

It's about 3 days from the event to the test, so even if you did get infected it's a low probability it would be detected so soon.

Question is if you did get infected, are there any test/controls at your destination??

Temp test on arrival at hotel I believe

Quick straw poll - what we would you guys do if you were me? We've got to do CovID tests next Tuesday ahead of flying to Tenerife on Friday. Our 'Monthly Boys Night Out' group's Xmas do is at a local pub, in the beer harden this Saturday. I don't drink so will be in control, but would you go?

No. Too much at stake with the kids' expectations. Only takes one stroke of bad luck, a last minute "domestic emergency" should get you off the hook. Not just Covid causing high temperatures right now either, no end of colds and coughs going round.

Kids don't have any expectations as yet, we're not telling them until we have -ve tests!

Tactically sound all things considered !! How important is it to you that you get away ? If it really matters personally I just wouldn't risk it, there will be plenty of opportunities for bonding sessions next year. In the end it's down to what matters to you most :)

exactly. to me that holiday would enjoy massive priority and giving one meetup a pass seems a very small sacrifice for it

No. If you somehow get infected at the pub, you'll have the worst possible outcome - being stuck in Tenerife in quarantine with kids (because the Tuesday test will likely still be negative). Not worth it risking a vacation for a monthly night out.

I've not had chance to fully read that paper yet. Does it breakdown route of infection by setting?
No, it's a statistical analysis of measures taken in individual countries and their effect. So it's not about modeling ways of infection, but about actual results, and then trying to derive the contribution of individual anti-covid measures to these results.

Update from the Netherlands:
Our responsible minister has said measures will last long beyond January even though the first wave of vaccinations are planned from that month. This was apparently the last straw that breaks the camels neck for the hospitality industry. In a statement to the public and the government they have said they will reopen from January 17th, no matter what the restrictions are by then.
I think some public uprising is needed to get out some of the ridiculous measures.

Update from me (no one cares!! ;) ? )
Im doing fine. Didn't feel the need to post here for a while, but was reading along. Feel bad for the UK people with all the crazy rules in Tiers.
Havent changed my mind, I don't believe in the usage of facemasks, nor do I believe lockdowns or tiers will have any effect.
This virus is doing what a virus does, unfortunately for some people. Lockdowns are just temporary stops and facemasks are symbol politics.

The news of vaccines is good news to me. Not that I feel I need one, but if a vaccine gets me to Ibiza next summer...fine.
Absolute mentalist  glad your ok though

Here is an interesting study of how efficient individual anti-covid measures are (actual results are on page 10). This is based on actual experience of countries implementing different measures.

Closing of schools/universities and limiting of gatherings seem the most important measures. On the other side, mandatory wearing of masks in public spaces seems to have no effect.

The part about masks baffles me. I am a believer in masks, I wore masks even before they were made mandatory. But the fact is, I never saw any numbers confirming that wearing masks indeed reduces the Covid-19 infection rate... There is an old study from the first SARS outbreak in 2003 which showed that wearing of masks did help back then, but I saw nothing like that for the current virus.

There are plenty of studies that demonstrate the varying effectiveness of mask materials that give us good reason to believe they do work to a degree. The problem is mask mandates don't actually cover the environments where COVID is spreading. Bars, restaurants, and private gatherings are driving these outbreaks... all places people take off their mask indoors. While I cannot present a study to support this claim, I think its likely the people who would be maskless at a bar in a pandemic are on average less compliant with mask wearing than those who choose to avoid such locations.

The measures that study finds to be most effective are all basically limiting the number and duration of interactions with other people. The masks aren't the problem, its us. The same countries that used masks effectively for SARS (SE Asia) are doing better than average with COVID as well.

EDIT:

I was reading some of the study and I also want to note that this study was Jan - May. I'd be very curious to see how the data has moved over time... My non-expert opinion is we would see some increase in mask effectiveness and a decrease in effectiveness of business closures and lockdown measures since mask compliance has increased and lockdown orders have been less strict and there is less compliance with the rules in place than early in the pandemic.

No. Not worth the stress.
