I said it before I think. Herd immunity while putting the risk groups in quarantine.
Not shutting down life and putting everyone in lockdowns without perspective or a solid plan like most governments do. Perhaps that's the Swedish way.
You do realise how long it takes for heard immunty to become effective don't you?
It takes years.
Secondly, this being a novel virus, there is yet no hard evidence of people having enough antibodies to stop reinfection, in fact there's evidence to the contrary.
Couple with that, there's actually 2 strains at present L and S (both as lethal as each other), it just is not practical at all to take this approach.

Oh God are there two.... I didnt know that

Scientists I am following on Instagram that was on the Netflix show pandemic (which actually predicted this) have made a break through and are going to be trialing antibodies

I've completely given up on 2020 already. Any kind of break at all will just be a bonus. I'm also not willing to fork out in advance for a holiday as I keep being let down, if there's a cheap air deal I'll buy the flights and book the hotels at the last minute (if the air company goes bus then so be it) - which means they won't be getting the money up front.

However if booking.com would simply accept that paid-for hotels are gonna be shut and repay us directly - no application, no telephoning - then I might change my mind.

Yeah the 2 strains seem to have the same effect on people but don't think has much bearing on potential treatment.
They are working on a home test kit for antibodies so you'll at least know if you've been infected. This will be useful as some people can be asymptomatic yet pass it on.
The test needs blood though and the idea is it will be like a blood sugar test.
Sooner the better

Look on the bright side, other than money we will lose through cancellations which we should get back....£££'s saved all year....double to spend next on wine, beer, food, trips, decent pair of heels :p:p:p

Yes we need it...and would really help, they may use it for airports etc

the amount of times I think I have had corona but I think it's anxiety ? hope so anyway

I know people that have had it and it's nasty, even when it's just flu like symptoms and they don't need to go hospital

I think we've both had it, I had very mild symptoms but had the tell-tale loss of smell and taste for about 10 days, my GF had fever and now has lost her taste and smell too. It would be good to know for sure though. The company I work for are making the tests, but I don't think they're antibody ones, at least as far as I know.

.. wait until this virus hits India and parts of Africa properly.

That is something I've been thinking about, and I really expect the worst.

I was fortunate/unfortunate enough to do a 7 month stint in South Sudan in 2017, working mainly in Malakal and the capital Juba.

The place was ravaged by civil war, struggle and diseases of every kind. On top of the genocide and ethnic cleansing that had went on, the UN teams and medics from MSF (Medical Sans Frontiers) absolutely had their work cut out to say the least.

I dread to think how this will hit them. Or the rest of Africa for that matter.

Coincidentally I made mates with an Indian soldier out there, top bloke, he was on a 12 month tour under the UN. He popped up on my facebook last week and I had a brief chat asking if they were preparing for this pandemic. Apparently they'd just gotten over a cholera outbreak in his area. Fcuking hell ?

There's no reason why basic food, shelter and health needs can't be met. If someone tells you they can't be, that's because some ***** hog way more wealth and resources than they should be allowed to.

Yes, this.

There is enough wealth in the world to see us through this.

But I’m not surprised by the levels of greed shown in recent weeks.

Owner of Weatherspoons, owner of Virgin and owners of some premiership football clubs should hang their heads in shame. To name a few.

People won’t forget this.

I'm sure @Hurr1cane will add his thoughts but the way I see it...in italy, the epicentre is in lombardy. milan was hit yeah, venice too, but mainly bergamo. which, compared to madrid and barcelona is a really small city. in spain, the two biggest cities of the country have been hit and the government has been too late in putting the lockdown in so from madrid and barcelona it has spread further and quicker than was the case in italy. I might be wrong with this assumption though.

Italy is reporting 4-5,000 new cases per day, and Spain 7,000+ for the past few days. They report new cases at different times so I think Italy is up by about 5,000 cases... at this pace that gap will be closed by end of Friday. I think the better way to look at it is cases/population -- in that category Spain is far ahead with 2300+ per million people and Italy 1900+ per million people.

Estimates I've read for herd immunity is 60-70% population to be immune for this virus. Right now, even if you throw a multiplier of 10x on the confirmed cases, the worst hit countries are under 2%. The next step is to get antibody testing on EVERYONE in a place like Bergamo to see what the actual numbers are. On a neighborhood level its possible some populations may have hit the 60-70% mark, but it will take years or a vaccine for herd immunity on a city or national level.

Also, by my last reading, there are now more than 2 genetic variants for the virus. This is not alarming, it is expected, and it is actually pretty cool how scientists can track the movement of them. None of the variants are believed to have any functional impact on how the virus operates, none are better or worse than the other.
