Probably getting myself in a tangle here, and it is controversial to say, but how many deaths have there been in non-elderly people that would have lived on average for 5+ years?

Go tell the mourning parents.

Officials in Illinois have revealed that a baby that tested positive for Covid-19 has died, the first known death of an infant in the US with coronavirus.

Try saying that to the 6.65 MILLION that filed for unemployment benefits in the US last WEEK...

I was talking about the poster who said he was angry at the over reaction of governments when they're trying to keep people safe.
My work has also closed.
There were 900,000 new applications for benefits in the UK in the last 2 weeks.

My whole point was that all the things being put in place are not an over reaction. This is unprecedented in modern times, the whole world is affected and you have muppets on here saying they'll be furious if there work has closed "for no reason" FFS and another saying old people gonna die anyway in the next few years so f**k them

OK, so this debate could go on and on and on. I am not some crazed loon saying that we should just 'carry on'. ALL I am saying is other aspects of life will be damaged too. And there probably will come a point when people will be more openly debating that. We can pretend it won't happen, but it will. Another example - children that need social workers as they are in damaged homes etc. They can't now have face to face visits. My point is the debate will soon more beyond just the headline numbers of deaths, and people may look at other areas where people are suffering.

The whole situation is a complete shit show and many many people will suffer indirectly, through no fault of their own, other effects of this virus.

The alternative of doing absolutely nothing would see tens of millions die. Would you like to make that call?

it's not an either/or situation imo

any intelligent society will be concurrently working out how to minimise disruption, prevent job losses, reduce collateral fallout.

my work anticipated the logistical headache of getting everyone to work from home and froze pay too to avoid laying people off. The smart approach. (even though I could've done with that pay rise)

there will be endless social issues/problems obv but this is a PANDEMIC ffs. Preventing a global catastrophe is #1. How can anyone even be thinking about anything else?

but but but but I'm going to miss El Row opening (Sad face)

Oh by the way, for the people who think the scientists and governments are over reacting despite watching what's going on in Northern Italy and Madrid..... wait until this virus hits India and parts of Africa properly.
I think it will be a lot less than in the developed world, surprisingly.

Keep in mind many of the fatalities (but not all) are people with underlying conditions. Those people are not in huge supply in Africa/ India etc. when you dont have rudimentary medical care and limited access to top pharmaceuticals.
