Woof. I read that whole thread of tweets and it is sad.
For reference, On March 1st they had ~1400 cases and 40 deaths. Today, Italy reports 9,172 total cases (724 recovered, 433 dead, 7,985 active) and of those active cases 733 in serious and critical condition requiring hospitalization. The serious and critical patients are spending upwards of 2 weeks in hospitals so there is very low turnover, and beds are not opening up for new patients as the numbers explode.
In a country with 60,000,000 people, it took less than 2 weeks and 1,000 severe or critically ill to stretch the health care system to its max...
what surprises me is that, as far as I can see, compared to any other country, the fatality rate in italy is far higher than anywhere else.
compare with any other country really
