Apparently, 55 million die each year of all causes. So I wonder would that have nearly doubled the death rate or a subset of the exiting death rate? I read the article, but there is no mention. She did say that good distancing measures would/could "save" 38 million, so maybe she means that COVID fatalities would have been additive deaths? ?

Because COVID-19 is a novel virus (not seen before) when you see a number like that they generally are talking about new deaths. You are right to suspect there will be overlap in COVID deaths and people who would have died anyways and they can try to account for that roughly.

In reality, we will not know the real numbers for a couple of years. Researchers will use data from the years preceding and after the pandemic to model what a COVID-less 2020 would have looked like and compare to actual data to calculate what is known as "excess mortality." Doing those studies they might see something like lung cancer deaths dropped 50% in 2020 but rose back up to expected levels in 2021. Then they would determine if those people survived at a miraculous rate, or died due to COVID-19. Maybe 2021 deaths due to 'old age / natural causes' come in way below expected, and they could conclude that COVID-19 killed many in that demographic early.

Strange days, we will probably also have fewer traffic deaths and murders...

More births. My mother showed me a meme that 2021 babies will be called "children of the quarn"!!!

@Hurr1cane Are you from the US?

Great post. Worth noting that in Ireland at least there was a spike in elderly people who died of flu before Christmas so its possible the virus may well have been here since then.

2020 cancelled....roll on 2021

This is your slogan ;)

It's really not been too bad or out of the ordinary for me.

I did however discover something I'll share with you now: In the US (I know... no one is from the US...) certain Target stores (a retailer that, at some stores, will have grocery items/is considered "essential" during the lock down) have a service that lets you avoid lines & potential virus exposure by shopping on your phone. There are a couple of steps in the process but I'll include a link for anyone who may want to use it.

Target's Download Page

Basically in the app you choose "Drive Up" as your delivery or pick up option. The real problem is that it's not available for all items; only some of them can be picked up like this. But it's still an effective means to limit your exposure if your Target store offers it. Then they prepare your items, contact you via text/email when it's all ready, and you drive into their lot where it's all brought out to your car.

Kind of neat! :)

They have that here too, even before outbreak. Over run now though as nobody wants to go out. Still plenty of idiots who don't get the message with regards to social distancing.
America been hit pretty hard too by the looks of it. There's one Governor in Ohio who was ahead of everyone it seems and is getting the results. Good on him for listening to the experts and having the courage to implement what needs to be done.

Has anyone who's booked early in the season with Playasol Ibiza Hotels heard from them? I received this last week but heard nothing else but then I'm booked early June, just wondering if they've made a decision on earlier bookings yet?

Dear customers, employees and partners,

In these uncertain times in which we face an global emergency, I’d like to share a message of calm with our customers, employees and partners. There can be no doubt that we are experiencing very difficult times, however, we will come out the other side of this situation with the conviction that we can regain normality and come back even stronger as people and as a society.

After working long and hard with the Playasol Ibiza Hotels team and aware of the evolving nature of the coronavirus (COVID-19), we have gradually closed the doors of our hotels and thus upped the safety measures that we have been taking since the start of this crisis. Similarly, we are very attentive to any positive progress, prepared for re-opening and the return to normality. I’d like to acknowledge the work and warmth of my whole team who are showing professionalism and commitment beyond the call of duty. Their attitude is always impeccable and they’ve overcome the challenges we’ve come up against, not just now but throughout the years gone by.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for the trust they’ve shown in choosing us as their travel and experience partner. Our commitment to our customers —to you—is firm, and the whole Playasol team is working hard to manage and deal with your requests and provide you with flexible solutions. We’d like to continue surprising you, for you to feel that excitement of packing your suitcase once again, and that you keep on making endless happy memories with us. Ibiza’s landscape will keep on shining. Its crystal clear waters and people will still make it one of the most seductive destinations, in addition to its unrivalled leisure and entertainment offer.
I’m certain that with much effort we can get through these undoubtedly very complicated times, and soon we’ll be back to normality in every sense of the word. Back to showing our destination to the world and bringing you that special happiness we all feel when we travel.

Thank you once again,

Sincerely,

Antonio Domenech Lago

Talk of a 'football hub' at 3 grounds in the midlands over a month. 3 games per day behind closed doors, all on tv, all players and staff corona-tested before it starts. Make sure they dont lose their tv monies!

Not sure about that one personally...
And a perspex tunnel from ushusia to Hi..

Can't see that happening either but something along those lines would be great!

You have to factor in that if it means millions will stay at home and watch on TV, rather than start breaking curfew (in a few weeks I can see people getting bored/stressed/ feeling invincible and misbehaving, particulary when the weather improves) then it might be for the greater good to have some sports happen.

Playing at one ground reduces the number of stewards, camera crew etc and stadiums are massive so can keep plenty of distance. Its mainly the players in close contact on the pitch at most at risk.

Shaking hands, hugging sweaty strangers and talking bollox while having the time of our lives seems alien right now.
I believe they will be back though and before the end of the year hopefully.
This thing caught everyone off guard, once people stick to lockdown and keep the numbers under control, i believe this will be dealt with in future like viral meningitis or sars. If there's a case it will be managed and precautions taken, other then that business as usual. Its the sheer numbers of a novel virus that caught everyone out.
The virus itself, even for people seen as higher risk is not necessarily a death sentence, once there's adequate medical treatment available. It's the case of the huge volume of people presenting at once which makes it catastrophic.
The virus will hit its tipping point soon enough if the lockdown continues, and hopefully we'll be able to get back to living again, and watching sunsets on one of the best places on the planet.

We have "click 'n' collect" at supermarkets in UK - but you have to book slots to use it at supermarkets and there are no slots available for 3-4 weeks anywhere close to me (for example) - all booked up. Don't even think about home deliveries. So the concept is great but already capacity is overstretched as soon as restaurants closed down.

The real issue round the area I live is that some basics are just unobtainable. There has been no flour or bread available to deliver for example for 2 weeks despite rationing by supermarkets/retailers and major flour producers increasing production massively. So if you hadn't stocked up, if you couldn;t or didn;t want to expose yourself to risks going out to hunt around 4-5 stores for one bag you would now be without any sort of bread to eat. You also can't bake your own without flour. Other basic food and baking items are the same and even seeds to grow your own vegetables are getting almost impossible to buy, boxing people into a trap to having to queue and shop over weeks.

It's a chicken and egg situation - at the start people were asked not to "panic buy". But even after people pretty much finished panic buying and rationing came in the shelves are still empty of those basic staple items. People are asked to trust that there is enough food in the system. I am sure there is, but rather like medical PPE there is simply no logistical capability to get certain items where the demand is so people can access them. Had hoped by now this would be stabilizing, but it is clearly not. These failures to adapt systems and supplies are at the root of the pressures driving people out of their homes, especially people with larger families or trying to shop for others. It is not just the logistics of distributing PPE that is essential to keeping the virus spread contained, it is equally if not even more so the need to effectively distribute supplies to the public to decrease their needs to go out.

So after this thing gets sorted and we can travel again we will definitely get back to Ibiza .. clubs and whatever party is never part our trip so it could be any month of the year.. Two DJs I do want to hear though are
Osunlade on #SoundCloud

Christian @ Zerospace (Manhattan, Feb 2020) by Christian Voldstad on #SoundCloud
Don't think they play Ibiza much and I'd prefer to catch them doing a long set somewhere hopefully in Europe ..
I'll be keeping an eye on there schedule to cross them off the bucket list.....

I canceled my August trip for Croatia and Ibiza today. It was going to be my first time since 2017, I was really excited for this trip. As much optimism I want to have I don’t see the world getting any better anytime soon this is going to take some time. Decided it was best for both my safety and the safety of others for me not to travel internationally this year. I don’t want to put the local population and those back home at risk. I hope everyone here stays safe and we all can get back to Ibiza when the world gets better and little more wiser.

Yeh I won't travel this year and next year will pretend I am celebrating my 40 even tho I will be 41

Do u think hotels etc will survive and be able to open next year

DJs won't be able to tour as much as they do now...

Even if things were sorted and did get to Ibiz I think be very quiet no atmosphere or clubs
