Figures rising is expected and is the balancing act they're trying to manage - they won't set an arbitrary rate nor should they be pushed in to doing so - I guess the tightrope is making sure that any increases in infection rates are in the asymptomatic and young who won't require hospital treatment to allow the NHS to take stock and begin preparing for winter, and the vaccinations program to continue apace to protect the vulnerable.
If they get it right, they should find that by the time the rate rises to such a level as to be concerning, it's negated by the fact vaccination and immunity is widespread.
On a wider point - has anyone seen anything about immunity post-covid without vaccines? We're over 12 months on now and I've not seen any reliable idea of how long people retain immunity for, which I'd have assumed we'd now be seeing with more people being re-infected?
