Ex wifes cousin died of coronavirus last night. 50 years old, no underlying conditions (wouldn't be surprised if was diabetic though) but very overweight. Lovely woman but was a real Covid deniar, wouldn't wear masks or anything. Very sad. She is a really well know person in her community (of Pakistani descent) hopefully will make a few people take it
more seriously

One of my team tested positive this morning, 3 weeks after getting the Pfizer. Hopefully reduces severity as she is an old overweight smoker in her 60s 🤞

I have had so much personal experience of covid, mainly from people outside of work, is this the norm? If so cant see how people dont take it seriously.

3 weeks after getting both jabs?

Two friends of my Dad and his ex-boss died from Covid (all in their 70s). Parents of my childhood friend (in the 70s too) had it (with pneumonia) and survived. All they took Covid-19 seriously and reduced social contacts etc., but couldn't avoid it.

My Dad is still seeing friends now and then, but only one friend at a time, with several days between visits in order to allow for any symptoms to develop, in order to avoid creating spreading events. So he did three separate small birthday celebrations this year :)

Old mate I worked in a club with died of it, 45, not sure on anything underlying. A ex neighbour / mate of ours 62, went into hospital , was texting me saying he was on the mend but it would be slow. Took a turn for the worst, and never made it out. Gutted. These were long before the announcement of the variants too.

There literally is though.

Or have you invented a magical reason as to why when the majority of the countries around the world have seen their infection rates and deaths fall after enforcing some form of lockdown?
No one knows yet if numbers reduce due to basic measures such as working from home, social distancing, not shaking hands or enforcing lockdowns. Also lots of lockdowns ended at the beginning of summer and were enforced again in fall / winter. Could play a role.

This study in 10 countries on restrictive measures vs less restrictive measures is very interesting in relation to this discussion:

The correlation between lockdown starting and cases reducing looks strong? The reduction after the start of the current lockdown certainly is weather related

probably not that interesting to most on here but I recently got called up to work at a polling station (for regional elections on Feb 14) which under Spanish law is like jury service, ie no getting out of it. obv a bit nervous about this. was wondering if any of you have managed to get out of working a public event on health grounds?

Calling in sick would work in times like this I suppose.

a doctor's sicknote to excuse me from an event I fear getting ill at. Pure Catch 22!
Would you need a doctors sick note?
With the current fear climate...calling in saying you woke up with a cough should make them scrap you from the list immediately I guess.

trust me, they know that everyone would call in sick if they could. Am appealing but I will probably just have to double-mask Dr Fauci style..

I guess been in an environment with high viral loads probs increases chance of actually getting infected?

Hopefully the vaccine means t-cells are prepared and will be mild 👍

Be interesting if you can get them to have an antibody test to see what their levels are at. Perhaps, as the data suggests, not everyone has a real strong antibody response to the 1st dose.💁‍♂️

Pa Buckley's jab appointment this morning went like a dream. I'd told Ma Buckley to bring her NHS number and explain he has Parkinsons and she is his carer, even though she'd been told over the phone she'd have to wait. Quick conflab with the management and they did them both. I've just dropped them home, fully Pfizerred up
My dad got his 1st dose yesterday, they asked age of my mum (65) and said can't do her at same time, but implied if was closeish to 70 they would have.

Makes sense as reduces risk of that household 🤔

My grandad (93) got his first dose this week too. They actually came out to his house for it! He had a reaction to it a day later but the paramedics said he is so weak already from his heart failure that his immune response basically sapping all his strength. He seems ok now 👍

Last i heard my 94 year old relative hadn't had hers but i'm hoping she has now as the surgery were in the local news on Saturday as they said there were leftovers and invited anyone in... The police ended up attending to disperse the area 😂, my Uncle has already had his from that surgery, he's 70. My Sister is booked in for next week for hers.

Formentera placed at "level 4". Used to be one of the places with near-zero covid.
Reminiscenct of Isle of Wight. Islands are a double-edged sword when things like this get in, can go one of two ways !

Invest in a few FFP2 or FFP3 masks (preferably the latter) for your own safety. Awful to wear and speak through but in the end what's a bit of discomfort if you're worried ?

Ask for a vaccine asap before you go risking your life?

Good luck with that. Madrid have suspended all vaccinations as they've run out of vaccine and even in Germany their centres sit idle because they don't have supplies. Droves of highly vulnerable people not getting vaccinated because of Pfizer shortages.

From what I gather Israel has a guaranteed supply as a condition of providing all the health data from it. (For Pfizer)

So guess there isn't much left for "others" who haven't got an early contract like that.

Israel close to been done, so I guess that will free up supply after that 🤔

Just checked up on where we are locally today as far as 7-day rolling case rates are concerned. and that's as low as the stats can go, the virus is pretty much stamped out locally. It's a long time till 8th March for an area with numbers like this to be locked down, hope they focus their resources somewhere relevant and leave us alone to self-regulate.:
