Large piece on the BBC news this morning about the increased covid figures in Catalonia, news we could well do without.
I saw that too. Mainly young people in clubs and bars, also with poor adherence to social distancing rules more generally. (Edit: report also said hospitals where getting full again too?)

Thing I'd like to know is that the numbers are going up, are these test results from people with moderate+ illness getting tested, or is their wider community testing? Just that if the young are mainly asymptomatic, they are not likely to get tested as don't have symptoms ?

Hope thats temporary ... otherwise the rest of the holiday season is in danger.
Is it possible for the catalan people from high risk areas to travel ? If they come over to the islands it will be a problem.

I know we have touched on this in the past, but anyone else feel we have reached the point where the cure is worse than the disease?
I feel I'm nearing that point now.
I'm fine with masks and social distancing for myself, and accept that the rest of 2020 is a write off,
But my daughters are due back at school next month, primary 2 and nursery. Hearing the social distancing measures that will be in place for them breaks my heart. Theyv been robbed of so much already.

Perhaps this is an unfair comment, and I make it as an upset father, but I can't help feel my children are suffering for fat overweight smokers who won't even wear a mask

There are not only fat smokers which are in danger. A mask helps not in every case.
The times are as they are

From what heard/read in uk from SAGE is that for young children social distancing is not really as important (never mind been hard to actually enforce) due to children not getting server symptoms or seeming to be a big vector of transmission. The social distancing stuff in schools is more to protect the adults, esp the older ones.

And yeah while been overweight/diabetic increases risk (apparently something to do with blood sugar levels, how body deals with that and ace2 expression is higher in those people, which is what virus latches on to), don't forget it _increases_ your risk, but plenty younger not overweight people suffering from covid and its secondary complications (blood clots and so on).

If it was as easy as saying fat people stay in doors, life would return to normal quickly. Unfortunately simple answers to complex problems don't usually exist, and politicians who try to make simple answers generally don't understand the problem.

And I sympathise, besides food shopping I've not left the house or done anything for 20 weeks, except parents visiting twice. Partly so don't risk my parents health, but also my own as my medical condition could shrug it off or go the other way??‍♂️

I know the social distancing of children is to more to protect others.

The fat smokers comment was just me venting

I think my point is... As time goes on, my care to protect unknown people (many of whom don't even look after themselves) versus the health and development of my own children is playing on my mind.

Again there is no simple answer, but IMAGINE the money that was spent on furlough etc was spent of exercise and health education programmes for the whole population.

I heard today a reduction in bodyweight weight of just 1/2 a stone significantly reduces the likelyhood of severe reaction from covid.
Not too mention the other benifits it would have such as on hypertension, stroke, mental health, diabetes etc.

Yup I agree, the problem is shit food is cheap, mainly because it doesn't perish as quick as healthier foods. We are the USA of Europe health wise.

Doesn't help when food lobby is bitching about banning junk food adverts before 9pm to reduce children's exposure to it. It's not if peeps need to be encouraged to go out and eat crap food. There is a McDonald's on the entrance to my estate, day drive through opened cars as far as you could see, even tailing back onto a major road and roundabout. It's like it most mornings and lunch times ?‍♂️

Plus boris doesn't like to interfere in peoples liberties unless pushed, thus late lockdown (except when lobbyists get involved lol. Like the tories defeated the bill to block foreign interests owning parts of the NHS ?‍♂️?‍♂️) plus he doesn't really do detail and is quite lazy, but I digress.

Can't think of any real easy or quick answer.

I found a risk calculator the other day and I can's find it again, grrr.

Anyhow, I put in my figures, the bad news is I'm over 60 (just) and a male (ish). But my BMI is fine, I don't smoke or over-drink, have a good diet, do good exercise (before Covid anyway) and I'm white which seems to be a plus and no other health issues.

So if I got Covid my chances of dying are well over 1/1000; however if it got to the stage that I was on a ventilator that then means it's around 50/50. odds just slightly in my favour.

I'll see if I can dig it up again. But here's another https://ourworldindata.org/mortality-risk-covid

I live next door to a pack of tramps. Don't work, get house for free, without fail every night thay have a delivery of pizza or Chinese.
I don't even know how they afford it.
I'm living next door same size house, with a decent job struggling to pay my mortgage living off cornflakes haha.

Fat smokers LoL watch out we're coming for you next...
I admit that was a stupid comment, there are many socio-economic reason why a person may be overweight. They should not be labeled and shamed, but encouraged and educated.
But i think we need to see the wood through the trees. These are the 2 biggest killers in society by miles, I'd love millions to be spent on that.

If they told us how many die each day from smoking, drinking and eating shit we would never go outside again...
Il always remember sitting drinking on the balcony in ibiza and my friend was smoking, he sat his pack of fags down on the table and there was a picture of a man on the box laying dieing on a hospital bed with massive cancerous tumors on his throat. Somebody asked him does that not put you off smoking and he looked at it and said "why what's wrong with him?"
???‍♂️

@soha I empathise with your point entirely - and it's good that you at least acknowledged it came from a point of frustration rather than doubling down on it.

For me, as much as children are being affected by this, so are most other people in some form or another. No office workplace will be the same for the foreseeable, think of how many of the elderly of vulnerable will have missed out on opportunities to protect themselves and others. This virus has affected everyone in some format and for me at least, as uncomfortable as many of these measures are, I see them as the quickest way back to 'normality'.

I went through phases of apathy, to complete indifference, to actual panic when a colleague of mine was hospitalised, and am now trying to adapt as best I can to the measures. It's shit, but it is what is is - so with that frame of mind I'm trying to make the best of it.

Agreed mate.
I'm just having a wobble ?

Reports suggesting UK will impose 14 days quarantine from all arrivals from Spain after midnight tonight.

Now of course the quarantine is a bit of a farce, Police can barely get the say job done never mind policing mask wearing and returning holidaymakers...but this ever changing situation is why im staying home this year.
