Point of origin -i.e where did you start your journey.
Yes. Doesn't matter what your passport says, for example as I have alluded to before, anyone from the UK or France going to Guernsey would automatically go into quarantine (save for key workers) regardless of what your passport said. So the same would apply Canada to Spain, USA to Germany etc.

By what definition? If a US citizen lives in New Zealand can they get in? If a NZ citizen lives in the US can they get in? If it's from point of origin, can I just connect from Canada and get in?
I think there will be no standard to "disqualify" anyone. Rather, there will be a standard to "qualify" certain travelers, with everyone else being banned from entry.

Judging from the press, it will be based on citizenship and there will be a list of countries whose citizens will be eligible to enter the EU. Since most citizens live in their countries of citizenship, it seems reasonable even if it doesn't perfectly cover all possible cases.

USA-Canada border is still close, at least till July 21th, so Americans can't pass through us (sorry).

EU borders are now open to Canadians, but the 14 days quarantine on my way back still applies, so I can't confirm yet my July trip to Ibiza. ?

Here's a better layout of the restrictions: https://www.godsavethepoints.com/europe-2020-summer-travel-international-countries/

Looks like there are some exceptions, mostly for family or longtime EU residents. I'm sure more will come out over the next couple days.

Ah thanks for that article! It links to an EC press release which seems to state pretty clearly it's based on country of *residence.* Departure city isn't mentioned, and citizenship is only mentioned as an exception: EU citizens and their families are exempt from the restrictions.

So it seems no loophole for @B_Falls to reroute through Canada; and OK for @Thomas Cliche to travel even if he flies directly from Boston instead of Montreal. American citizens who are long-term residents of Europe (or Canada or UK for that matter?) should be OK. And anyone who is an EU citizen or immediate family member can fly in from anywhere.

Purely going off that press release of course - and would expect individual countries to tinker with the details - but it's a start!

A smart move, although I am not sure how EU border officials will be able to check the residence status. How does a Canadian citizen prove he is a resident of Canada?

Anyway, a good start.

Yeah seems the hardest thing to prove/verify out of the bunch.

Also no mention of whether there will be quarantine requirements layered on top of this for certain passengers -- like EU citizens returning from a banned country.

As usual with these things it's all as clear as mud. Like most things announced or decided by politicians ! Making it all up as they go along ....

So, my UAE visa is being cancelled this week, officially not a resident of anywhere. We’ll we flying through Amsterdam on our British passports on the 12th - so are we part of one of the loopholes?

Wouldn't be asking us bunch of reprobates for advice on that! Is there an Embassy/Consulate in the UAE that you could try and get an official word from?

My money (literally and figuratively) is on August 1st, as I would like to be in Ibiza on the 15th. It "is what it is" though, as I am kind of spent emotionally over this for a lot of different reasons, beyond vacations. I am at the point of "fuk-it" and stopped paying attention to the general news in recent weeks.

Anyway, it is not as simple as the block agreement. As per the article:

"Within hours of the EU announcement, Italy, which has one of the highest COVID death tolls in the world, said it would opt out and keep quarantine restrictions in place for all nations that were not part of the free-travel Schengen area. "

The article also discussed Canada's maintenance of a quarantine of incoming visitors. So I dont know if there will be reciprocity of the same from their citizens.

I like Ibiza in August, I'm looking forward to your August 1 bet. I still have my souvenirs from last year but my summer is nothing without a Europe break. I'm all for masks and testing and being safe - I hope they test those from the 14 countries who can enter!

Our Governor Cuomo just called out The Orange Fool for how ironic it is that in the beginning Europe was the epicenter for the virus, now they're banning us from entering due to our levels!

We will see about the trip, just need a week's heads up to arrange flights, as long as prices dont get silly. May even push to September if it makes sense.

Beyond a total shutdown there is nothing that will stop this bug, apparently. We dont have hard borders between states, so it was just a matter of time before it spread out. I have in-laws in Argentina that are in total lock-down (no travel between neighborhoods) which may be controlling the spread, but would cause a hot war in the US. In the tiny territory where I live we have had fewer than 100 cases out of 100K population, but will expect a spike as we re-open for tourism... I honestly expect the same for the EU in July/ August. It will be interesting to see what their pain threshold is.

Thankfully it does not look nearly as lethal as it did previously (hope that theory holds for the folks in TX and AZ, and everywhere else).

Maybe USA will be the first nation with herd-immunity!!!! Current estimates from blood-banks and sewage treatment centers assume that 20 million have already been exposed to this.

Travel bans will take time to resolve, because now there is a stupid reciprocity game going on :(

The EU is already refusing to let South Koreans in until South Korea allows EU citizens in - despite South Korea having a 5x lower active infection rate than e. g. Germany. People from Taiwan(!) are still banned for entering the EU, probably for the same reason.

No doubt there will be a similar game around the resumption of the EU-USA travel.

Not sure how Canada slipped through without the EU demanding reciprocity, lucky them (and us).
