One rule for us plebs and another for Cummings clearly. He should have been offered the chance to resign and when he turned it down he should have been fired. People in the UK are furious about this hypocrisy and it stinks

.

As to your other comments, well you’ve just admitted the guy deserves a “trial by media” and is a “ghastly human”. I’ve never met the man, so I wouldn’t know, I’ve never even heard him speak in public; assume you have though to have such strong views? I think your post just demonstrates you have other issues with him, and this is nothing really to do with covid.

Given his dubious record with Cambridge Analytica , the track and trace app, his disregard for the civil service and wanting to hire ‘weirdos and misfits’ to run these organisations. A man David Cameron called a ‘a career psychopath’, a man with a history of flouting parliamentary rules & regs... gives me a pretty good idea of the type of man the PM has advising him.

We've also seen 2 other government advisors standing down for breaking the lockdown rules in a smaller capacity. It's clean cut

To me it’s potentially reasonable, but we need a much fuller explanation of what alternatives he had and why he didn’t take them. If the stuff about the castle is proven then his career is finished and rightly so. His statement will be very interesting this evening.

Have to comment again, as your comment is so absurd. How many press conferences or interviews have you seen DC directly addressing the nation on covid? How do you know he’s even involved in the government’s covid response at all? Calderwood and Ferguson were key public covid spokespeople, who’s job was to directly advise government and the nation on covid, so to compare them and Cummings, who hasn’t given a public interview on anything as far as I’m aware since 2016 is ridiculous. I don’t recall this outrage from you about Robert Jenrick, who is a serving cabinet minister, and one that has delivered the stay at home message on several occasions, including leading the daily government briefing.

I'm guessing you've missed all the reporting on him sitting in sage meetings, also commenting "so what" when initially it was thought only a few old people would die.

Guess we will hear soon as he is going to give a press conference and answer questions

Perhaps the most damning thing in there for Johnson and Cummings is that it is the responsibility of the appointing minister, in this case Johnson, to ensure that the Special Advisor, in this case Cummings, adheres to the Code of Conduct for civil servants.

This includes behaving with integrity, honesty, objectivity and impartiality. As a Special Advisor he is exempt from the requirements to behave with objectivity and impartiality, but not from the requirements to behave with integrity and honesty.

This would lead to the conclusion that regardless of the outcome of the police investigation, Johnson is obliged by law to conduct an investigation into the movements of Cummings since the end of March. I'm sure Starmer is well aware of all of this already and will do what he can to ensure the investigation takes place.

*from someone I know on fb who reads up on this stuff.

Edit: not saying others have questions to answer for, they sure do. But it comes across as you're defending DC behaviour, which I feel is a little unwarranted. He isn't a stupid man no matter what we think of him. He was just "no f***s given"?‍♂️?‍♂️

What we have here is a complete red herring. It’s a distraction from the actual increasingly shambolic government response to covid. If Cummings and Johnson were eating ice creams together on Brighton beach with their families it would be a legitimate story. This is a stitch up job by the Guardian, who tracked Cummings to catch him out. He did wrong, but he’s at some time or another pissed off every newspaper editor in the nation and they’re making hay as a result. Readers of these papers have to make their own minds up.

While it is true it distracts from other things and the guardian is known to be anti government. There are "government friendly" papers also calling it out.

It's about integrity and trust. We know politicians and their advisors are generally slimy, but in this very serious time we kinda need to at the very least see them following the important rules. Otherwise why the f*** should we.

I see cummings and boris a bit like George w bush and dick Cheney. One is the shop front, the other is the real brains and power.

I guess if you're fine with DC staying and advising on government policy that will affect all of us, I'm not going to understand your view point. Sorry ?‍♂️

A summary for our Non-UK friends

Just watched swiss news. The guy is interpreted as a d**k.
They showed footage of him, asking journalists to make a physical distancing path, so he can get out of his house.
Boris will stand by him, as he is key for brexit.
According to the swiss tv.

Those papers like the Telegraph and Mail glossed over the Jenrick thing after a couple of days. They did that because their readers don’t want to read negative stories about a Tory, and the owners are donors/sympathisers. In this case, I genuinely think the papers see a chance to get rid of a key barrier to their access to government, which was far better in the pre DC days under May and Cameron.

It's. His. Slogan. His campaign. His message. His rules.

How can you not see that he has to go?

You admit yourself the government's strategy has been catastrophic and cost countless lives. He has been the lead strategist

Even if you, for some bewildering reason, feel he would be hard done by, surely this is the ideal opportunity to cut this cancer loose?

Also just to point out that trying to vilify investigative journalists for exposing public figures is absolutely mental

Of all the things you could slate journos for, that is not one of them
