some early news today

the balearic government has made a request to the central government, claiming that not only formentera, but also menorca and ibiza meet the criteria and should be going straight into phase 1 this coming monday 4th may rather than only a week later as originally proposed by the central goverment.

that request was only made last night, see what the central government says to that. if they accept the request it would mean that we'd see shops opening as early as monday and the only balearic island still being in phase 0 would be mallorca (which is also the island that had most coronavirus cases out of all of them).
fingers crossed for you guys, we aren't even on strict lockdown here and it is already driving us up the wall can't imagine what its like over your end

thanks. to be honest, even if the request gets denied, the main relief will come today anyway when they announce the rules as to how we will be allowed out for walks/sport as from this saturday onwards. this is a confirmed thing and personally I'm much more longing for this than for shops opening. seven weeks of full strict lockdown have been tough and I'm such an active and outdoorsy person, saturday will be like christmas to me!

that said, of course it'd be great if they granted the request, given we really meet the criteria...personally I wouldn't mind waiting another week with that to be extra safe, but I understand all the businesses's need to open back up ASAP.

Nine nations in a written statement towards the EU.

Maybe the rebirth of the ferry for a lot of continental Europeans.

Ryanair has kept a lot of bases and aircraft. They only need staff pretty much. But yeah a lot of people will be on the ferries.

On the radio yesterday they said the cost of keeping a typical tourist plane on the ground in fees and maintanance was around £300k/month. Blimey, that's almost as much as an airport car park.
I suppose those costs could be significantly less if an airline owns the base where the planes are kept, and I'd need someone in the know to explain the situation of Easyjet, Jet2, Ryanair and Vuelling.

no wonder they are itching to get them back in the sky, some serious money being thrown down the swanny at the present. doesn't even worth thinking about

I'm hoping Ryan Air can still stay as budget as possible after this we use them a lot. I know they have a bad reputation but in all honesty we couldn't afford to go away as much as we do without them, we use them a good 5 or 6 times a year and cant say beyond the very odd delay here and there we have had never had any issues you get what you pay for

Not many airlines will own anywhere to park planes. Most will rely on airport fees when they are on the ground normally - but they spend most of their time in the air!

BA for instance have sent smaller planes to Bournemouth airport & larger jumbos to Chateauroux. They don't normally use either airport but negotiated cheaper rates. Although I think most airports are waiving parking fees space is still a huge issue. I know Heathrow did very early on - https://www.heathrow.com/latest-new...e-available-capacity-in-fight-against-covid19

The bigger issue will be getting these planes back and in the sky. They were not designed to spend months stationary on the ground, exposed to the elements.

Yes, I understand the larger planes are being stored in desert areas away from the rain.

I've no issues with Ryanair except the difficulty now of getting your money back when they cancel. We need a law stating it is as easy to get a refund or cancel (out of contract) as it is to pay - ie a click of a button. Not just airlines, everything including your TV provider, broadband etc etc.

Totally agree, yeah tbh ive heard a few horror story's lately of them being a nightmare with refunds over this, although the option of credit points in my case would be sound enough but I know it wouldn't work for everyone. They / everywhere should definitely have to refund your money back as quick as they can take it it's a joke how systems can run

Credit points? Any vouchers they are issuing are only good for a year AFAIK, and we don't know yet know how things will be within that period. Also, if they stick the prices up on flights, that voucher might not fully cover the cost of your next flight.

ibiza thread updated. feeling positive. it's getting warm too, 25ºC this weekend (up to 35ºC in andalucía!). can't wait to get out of the house on saturday.

firing up the BBQ in a bit and cracking open a beer, I never thought I'd celebrate my 40th birthday in quarantine, but at least the outlook is far better now!
