it does seem the strict lockdown has worked here yeah. all numbers do point towards that.

we'll have to see how long it takes until cafés and restaurants can reopen. as for tourism....tricky. the central government doesn't seem to think it'll be possible for this year whereas the balearic government hasn't given up hope just yet. also if you listen into travel industry channels, various voices do see a possiblity of travel returning in the second part of the summer.

I'll say it again, I'm not banking on anything right now. we've prepared for the worst (a complete non-season), but hope for the best.

Be optimistic ...

With sit in a cafe , I mean :The islanders , no tourists . There is no reason to shut down anything which is not so critical , when the infections are close to zero.
Why not sit in Croissant show , at tables
with 3 m distance ?
Clubs and closed bars with many people are too dangerous.
The tourist thing : Time will tell. Personal opinion : Better not this year. I would not climb in a plane under this conditions.

How did you apply for this via your bank? Did you just phone up and ask?

I’m in the same boat re my Ibiza hotel and also some internal flights for Mexico.

Yes - ideally this should be credit card rather than debit, although some do seem to be helping. Also generally on spends over £100 per transaction.

However - this really only work if it is definitely not possible - i.e hotel isn't open or flight isn't operating. You'd have a difficult time arguing something now on a booking for 3 months time.

If the rebook option is no good to you - I'd definitely recommend the charge back option. Most banks seem pretty good - I had it recently with a holiday let for next month within the lock down period - who was refusing to refund because it wasn't their fault I was not local so couldn't stay there, the booking company was refusing to help. Barclaycard had the money back in my account within 5 days.

Also got the same for a trip to Vienna end of May, the Meininger chain is doing the same to me - allowing me to rebook - but if the amount is more I have to pay, but if it is less then no refund. Errr no thanks... they'll be getting the same treatment nearer the time
Yes, I got chargeback when FlyBe collapsed even though the ticket was under the £100 "limit" which surprised me. However even though I had airline failure as insurance, the insurers passed me on to chargeback.

Phone number on the back of your card. It's a relatively easy process as they have the details on your statements, just takes a few weeks.

If the hotel's open, but there's no flight (ie Ryanair cancel) do they expect me to change flights...and what if there are none?? Train and ferry...??!!! I suppose if the airlines are following "government advice" then I can't see how chargeback could get out of that.

Yes - that is a risk and you'd need travel insurance for that. But in many countries hotels are still not open so for at least the next month or so I think you'd be OK to chargeback

Wonder if a charge back happens if there’s an extra charge for a vendor? Even if there isn’t, from a reputational perspective they’d do well to give refunds. Personally wherever possible I’m deferring some of the breaks booked, particularly with smaller b&bs as I’d like them to keep the income.

We need cleaner air!
Sorry, but this "research" looks like BS to me. Most of covid-19 deaths happened in these polluted regions simply because the infection spread in these regions first. What matters is not the absolute number of deaths, but the ratio of deaths per 1,000 infected people. And the article conveniently avoids looking at that.

You could as well argue that tasty national cuisine contributes to Covid-19 deaths

We'll see. There's no definite conclusion drawn in the study as yet.

Just as an aside, I noted a while ago that tourists were encouraged to volunteer to neuter wild cats, if there are no tourists this year and the job can't be done thoroughly does that mean an explosion of Ibiza pussy cats next year???

Bold move from Merkel, the first time she's impressed me in ages.

She made a bit of cock up of that whole aligning with AFD scenario in Thuringia a few months ago, she could take some strength from this.

...talking of dodgy sources....one shite newspaper copied a made up story from another shite newspaper...

There will be thousands of knock on effects like this.

My missus has normally bought about 50 potential holiday outfits by now, but will only wear a few of them. Obviously hasn't bothered buying any now. Lost revenue for shops.

Strangely though GoOutdoors are still emailing me frequently with deals during this lockdown, as I'm a member. Maybe they know I'm at risk of losing my house in the not to distant future and want to sell me a tent to live in.

Joking aside though, the body count might be beginning to plateau but the hardship and struggle for families is going to just get steeper and steeper.

I try to find positives but they are rarer than a Geordie winning a spelling test at the minute.

Correlation or causation? I’d say, if a key metric for overcoming covid is a strong respiratory system, I reckon there’s causation there, as there’s good evidence that asthma and other lung diseases are higher in urban areas. There is though something of a trade off as cities in the main have better healthcare than rural areas, but often have worse living conditions. Think the mega cities in Brazil, India, China etc. You’re right that rates are helpful, but crude numbers still have value.

The few tourists who do that barely put a dent in the population anyway. Though I think I know somebody who would, if she was given half the chance ?
