I agree. The couple that have just managed to buy, and prices now drop - sadly they will be the losers here. But as Stivi said, it had to happen at some point. For example, the average London house price is £475,000... that is not sustainable.

In Germany its the same.
Maybe Covid will help to change it.

Now , in crisis times , with a possible off season , they have a good opportunity to sit together in Ibz and talk about the future. All the big players ... with the island gov ...
Flats for workers and natives in Ibz town area to prevent traffic , bycicle easy , more night busses and so on.

It's never really been anything different imo. From political agendas to mis-reporting of incidents and cover-ups.

The influence the press have over the UK public is astounding, that's the dangerous part.

It's worse than ever and the general public are more gullible than ever. The fact the country's PM public ignored all the basic advice and got himself infected and there are still people, lots of people, saying the Govt's doing a good job in an extreme situation, is indicative of the Orwellian double think going. You can literally see they didn't take it seriously enough, the Prime Minster said in public, in an official capacity, speaking to the press and the people, that he'd been ignoring the most basic advice and still people are going 'well done, good job'.

The only reason Johnson is likely toast is because Rupert Murdoch has decided so, for his own reasons, and will direct the masses that way.

Maybe Murdoch sees Starmer as a better fit for future continued domination.

This summer is a glorious opportunity to see what ibiza town and island looks like without all that darned tourist traffic in hire-cars. I would love the town to be traffic-free with car-parks and P+R outside town, the traffic's bad enough but also cluttered with road-side parking, get some cycle lanes introduced etc.

Yeah

Maybe the big people see it with their own eyes , whats possible in Ibz.
Better tourism is possible

Well 50 of our uk staff have just been furloughed, not enough work is getting done to pay the bills. Not sure if I'm affected yet or not, but expect not. For sites in other parts of the world with no such scheme, I can imagine layoffs will probs come in a month or two.

Company did say will be topping up to 100% of pay for those affected, which is good of them.

I remember being stuck in a traffic jam in Ibiza Town in winter. Seems those darned cars causing traffic jams belong to locals, not to tourists. There is a huge car park (Es Pratet) near the old town. Touristy parts of the town (near the port and Dalt Vila) are already traffic free. Not sure why some view traffic as a problem - I personally never got bothered by the traffic in Ibiza Town unless driving there myself. I prefer getting into town with the Aquabus boat, but driving is a welcome alternative, since the boats don't run 24h and stop running somewhere in Sept.

How is tourism without cars supposed to be better? A car gives you the freedom to explore the island. Apart from a few known hot spots, traffic isn't really a problem. Unless your "perfect tourist" is supposed to stay inside his all inclusive hotel all the time - I thought that was no longer desirable?

You don't hear too many companies topping up to 100% - so that is good. Interested to see how the dynamic is of companies furloughing half / part of their workforce, must be a bit odd when we get back to normal.

Sadly my work laid off 12% off workforce globally last week - too difficult to manage each countries individual schemes apparently

I use a car , too. And I know , a major part of the traffic is by people who come from work or go there. Thats for day travel.
At the evenings after 8 , its a lot of tourist travel.
A lot of people live outside Ibiza town because there are no flats. Thats a big reason for travel.
And the tourist travel is added on to this in season

Es pratet is ok. Mostly used by natives.
I looked at the cars : Mostly older ones.

But this is a traffic issue.
Maybe a thred anytime : How will Ibiza change after the Virus

Yeah, we where saying the least productive will get furloughed and the hard workers now got more work to do ??‍♂️.

Our company is international and from what they said, uk is only one doing this kind of scheme (for regions and countries we are in). It does make sense, just not something government can fund long term though.

Sad to hear about your layoffs ?

looks good

For me that means : Hard measures make sense. Maybe the worst is behind you.
In August , you will sit in a cafe ( tables far enough and other measures ). Maybe already in July
But I dont think you will see tourists this summer.

it does seem the strict lockdown has worked here yeah. all numbers do point towards that.

we'll have to see how long it takes until cafés and restaurants can reopen. as for tourism....tricky. the central government doesn't seem to think it'll be possible for this year whereas the balearic government hasn't given up hope just yet. also if you listen into travel industry channels, various voices do see a possiblity of travel returning in the second part of the summer.

I'll say it again, I'm not banking on anything right now. we've prepared for the worst (a complete non-season), but hope for the best.

Our little town 2 hotels and 3 big camping and caravan Park and access to a 7 more beaches and coves within 10k.. looks like one hotel is open and renting room out for €100-€150 a week 3mt,6mt and yearly lease.. camping and caravan Parks probably won't open at all this year.. lucky we can still get out with no problem. Non residents can be stopped coming out here for walks ect..

There is a lot of work that needs to be done there. Just remember western farming practices, though - the amount of animal cruelty involved, the antibiotics (I can't wait until the effectiveness of antibiotics runs out...) and other crap pumped into our meat, how BSE came about (feeding cows to frickin' cows*), etc. It's not all "those bloody foreigners".

*This is the essence of capitalism - cutting corners and exploitation to maximise profit.

Yeah well aware, probably a good idea to focus on the low hanging fruit first though and where the pandemic started.

R/e my holiday in late June - I can see my hotel being open for tourists - local ones - in June but me having no way to get there; As such the hotel won't cancel my already paid-for stay, so they won't owe me any cancellation money back; so that leaves two options; one is to accept their offer to re-book (but when??) or get the money back as chargeback from the credit card.

If the rebook option is no good to you - I'd definitely recommend the charge back option. Most banks seem pretty good - I had it recently with a holiday let for next month within the lock down period - who was refusing to refund because it wasn't their fault I was not local so couldn't stay there, the booking company was refusing to help. Barclaycard had the money back in my account within 5 days.

Also got the same for a trip to Vienna end of May, the Meininger chain is doing the same to me - allowing me to rebook - but if the amount is more I have to pay, but if it is less then no refund. Errr no thanks... they'll be getting the same treatment nearer the time

How did you apply for this via your bank? Did you just phone up and ask?

I’m in the same boat re my Ibiza hotel and also some internal flights for Mexico.
