Let’s be honest what has the mighty EU done in this current environment. Nothing! In the most challenging of times it’s proved worthless.

Each county is looking after their own interests at the moment. So much for sharing common values and looking after each other in a time of need.
So how does that fit in with the complaint that "the EU is interfering too much in our daily lives"? Countries are sovereign after all, perhaps the EU isn't such an over-bearing monstrosity after all! And, son't forget, the UK rejected the offer of all those ventilators...from the EU.

So most of those comments are bad...nothing to say about that.

BUT politicians saying: This small group of people are ruining it for the rest, now you all have to go into a stricter lockdown, shame on you people for wanting some sunshine and fresh air, you're killing people, it's your own fault etc. ..... is kinda ridiculous right??
We've seen that happen in the Netherlands too, the minister of justice pointing with his finger on live tv. Everybody was like come on...is this primary school where my teacher is letting everyone stay in class longer because one student did something wrong?
It's also disturbing that politicians are not seeing that they are creating civil unrest. We've now seen fights on the street and in supermarkets here because people are highly stressed and when someone's says "hey, keep your distance" or something like this...people explode.
The honest answer is there is no answer. If we need a further tightening, then surely there has to be an accepted end-point where they say...lockdown for another 14/21 days then we will start to release people? Otherwise this country will simply turn mental. we have enough problems with drugs and alcohol as it it...blimey I could be on a bottle a night if I were in a small flat. Maybe more...

I fully agree the lockdowns should have an end date in sight soon or there will be uprisings everywhere eventually.

That wasn’t the question? I’m asking in this current environment what is the EU doing that no individual EU country can’t do on their own?

It’s done nothing. Each Eu country is looking after their own interests.i agree thats how it should be.

Once it’s all over, are those richer EU countries going to be asked to pick up the bill for major economic losses of those poorer countries who have been hit hardest by this virus?

I can’t see the German people being happy about this for example and who can blame them when that money can be spent at home

The world, European and British economies will be in tatters when this finishes. gawd knows what anyone can do about that EU or no EU. If anyone knows tell me and I'll put my money in it!!

But RELAX!! Jacob Rees-Mogg is rolling in dividends from this crisis, so we should be celebrating for him.

So basically the EU has been proved to be worthless in time of greatest need.

But I do agree the world economies will be a mess for years to come.

One of the scientists who did the original report for the government in uk said this week and next they are working on exit strategies. He also said no country has an exit strategy from lockdown to normal life
(I presume without a vaccine etc).

So I expect in next week or so the gov start getting people prepared for the different scenarios on releasing some of the measures in the coming month or 2.

What exactly do you want he EU to do? They can't discover a cure out of thin air. They can't suddenly build 100,000 ventilators. But what they can do is co-ordinate the response so where beds are available, citizens can move easily from one country to the next and spread the load, and supply each other with vital equipment https://ec.europa.eu/info/live-work...sponse/covid-19-european-solidarity-action_en - equipment that was available to the UK.
I'm struggling to find how that response is "worthless"?

The exit strategy may be finally getting to higher levels of testing and contact tracing like they've been doing in South Korea. That way those infected and likely infected can be quarantined quickly, reducing the number of infected people in the general population and thus community spread.

That level of data collection would hopefully also provide more data on how people are actually spreading the infection. A number of the restrictions right now are based on hypothesis extrapolating from tests done in laboratory conditions, and from politicians who feel (perhaps rightly so) that they need to err on the side of caution. But the reality could be that certain actions (say, walking past someone briefly or lying next to them in the sun) actually has a very small risk of spreading infection and then those restrictions can be reduced.

daily update 5th april

balearics:
total cases: 1293
deaths: 75
recovered: 461
active: 757

ibiza & formentera:
total cases: 117
deaths: 6
recovered: 15
active: 96

today's good news is that the balearics is now the region where the spread is growing slowest in the whole of spain. there are only 22 newly infected people on the four islands in total in the past 24hrs and the number of active cases is slowly decreasing as more and more people recover. and as pointed out yesterday, it's generally looking a bit better finally in spain.
From the news thread - Stivi

This could, in one hopeless case of over-optimism, mean the Balerics could start to accept a gradual influx of tourists before the mainland. I assume there would be checks to see if the tourists are virus-free and I'm not sure how they would do even that (temperature??) but it's a glimmer and if anyone doesn't mind, I'll hang on to that!!!

Yup, he basically said mass testing and community tracing are important for exit strategies.

Shame the antibody tests so far have proven not to be reliable enough.

I don't count on that yet, no. in a first step I think us islanders would just be happy to be able to move around again freely and this is why I am glad the stats currently work in our favour. even though this is just an assumption or hearsay, but IF the islands (balearics and/or canaries) can get rid of covid-19 sooner than the mainland (a very plausible option right now), MAYBE the lockdown for us really only goes until end of april or mid may while it maybe still has to continue for a little longer on the mainland. the fact there‘s hardly any flights and ferries would make it possible for us to open up 'internally' already while the mainland still gets better. I understand this is wishful thinking, but it's not complete utopia either ;)

as for tourism...if we get any this summer, then it'll certainly be far more spanish and less international than usual. I'm not banking on it, but I keep on hoping we'll have a tiny bit of season this year.

But there is limits on the amount PPE each EU country shares with others.

Italy also criticises the EU for being slow to help. I’m sure this is the case for other countries.

One thing I do hope for once this is all over. Manufacturing is moved back to western economies and people actively try and buy home made products

I think we are going to see lockdowns get gently lifted for a fair while , my assumption is until the numbers become “flat “ enough for countries to deal with covid 19 is not going away ....I guess it will become seasonal “flu” heard immunity is the probable only answear one way or another , I guess we all need to get exposure .....not a nice thought but probably reality , if you don’t get immunity you will always be at risk ? Crazy times....

I don't think the disease can be eradicated; at least not without an extended and strictly enforced lock down. It's likely they will flatten out the curve though, as some people actively observe 'shelter in place' policies.

It will be strange though. For example at the minute if you’re walking on the pavement with someone coming towards you they quickly run over to other side of road it’s mental:lol: dunno how we can just get back to normality in a flash when this is over. Plenty People will See social distancing as a new way of life...

Actually my natural instinct is to do that already so for me social expectations are finally aligned with my own    I just don't like being told when and where I can go - especially given I usually try to go as far away from other people as I possibly can most of the time !!
