Books about Ibiza?

A different view from the 90s:Not part of the package - Paul Richardson.

And from the 60s:Wild Thyme in Ibiza - Stewart Anderson.

Both available from amazon .

Couldnt take to that Wild Thyme in Ibiza book. All that its author Stephen Anderson seemed to do in it was to drink, eat, swim and call in to visit people.

The White Isle by Stephen Armstrong was a much better read.

"The Life & Death of a Small Spanish Town" by Elliot Paul. Out of print now so you will have to find it second hand. No nightclubs, nobody snorting coke, but a great illustration of how Ibiza was when Franco took power in Spain. It has its critics as Elliot Paul was renowned for his self aggrandisement however one of the main protaganists in this book (Eulalia Noguera, now in her eighties) can still be seen being escorted across Calle San Jaime by her daughter at one thirty each afternoon. Many Ibicencans in Santa Eulalia remember their parents talking about the American journalist who lived here in 1936 and wrote a book about it.

Ms Noguera must be in her 90,s now. She was 19 when Paul wrote that book in 36.

Amazing to think that she is still alive. I will make it a point to meet her next time im in Ibiza.

I stand corrected she would be in her ninties of course; she is certainly old and can barely walk unaided. Mind you I haven't been in Ibiza since October so she may be pushing up the daisies now, every new day could be your last at that age.

I've just ordered a copy of this book from www.alibris.com who are a online second hand book shop & it cost only 13 euros inclusive of shipping. Atlast hopefully it'll make for a good holiday read for keeping the missus quiet whilst down on the beach:)

The book i ordered earlier this month has finally arrived & considering it's age is in very good condition in red hard back.

The book which is written by Elliot Paul 'The Life and Death of a Spanish Town' is i think going to make for good reading when in Ibiza sometime this year.:)

However i'd just like to know if the establishments mentioned in the book 'Antonia's Fisherman's Bar' & the Cosmis Hotel are still in the town? Also where the hotel is situated in the main street is this the same area where the buses used to stop for Ibiza town before relocating to a bigger area? I seem to remember two similar establishments (probably back then under different names) way back on my first visit to Ibiza back in the very early 80's. Ofcourse today's Santa Eulalia has changed much since Elliot Paul's time & is still growing & the chances are that much of what was written has long since disappeared.

Regards

Dave

Spotlighter's should take look at Stephen's Ibiza blog like i've just done ofwhich i'll be having a further indeph look over the weekend when i've got free time. It's true when looking at the photo's that Ibiza's landscape & indeed no-doubt the whole Island has changed over the past 50 years but is it for better or worst?
