(CNN) -- The mastermind of the worst terrorist attack on American soil is dead, U.S. President Barack Obama announced late Sunday night, almost 10 years after the attacks that killed almost 3,000 people.
Osama bin Laden -- the longtime leader of al Qaeda -- was killed by U.S. forces in a mansion outside the Pakistani capital of Islamabad along with other family members, a senior U.S. official told CNN.
In an address to the nation late Sunday night, Obama called bin Laden's death "the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda."

"Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan," Obama said. "A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body."

U.S. diplomatic facilities around the world were placed on high alert following the announcement of bin Laden's death, a senior U.S. official said, and the U.S. State Department should be sending out a new "worldwide caution" for Americans shortly. Some fear al Qaeda supporters may try to retaliate against U.S. citizens or U.S. institutions.

Great news... but it means little beyond point scoring for political figures.

The death of one man won't change consciousness.

"May God bless the United States of America."

(nowhere else mind.)

Good news no matter how you slice it.

Not the end of terrorism or of Al Qaeda, of course. But I'm sure as hell happy the guy took a bullet in the head. I hope he saw it coming too.

Would you trust Pakistan to find your dog?Couldnt find enemy N01 next to their main army school. Our "allies" to the end.

Probably the biggest rogue state that there is. The US pumped billions into the country to try the "we'll be really nice and build you schools and roads and hospitals" hoping it would pay off with them actually being nice back. The result?[FONT=&quot]

Last night the US went into Pakistan - a foreign country to assasinate the worlds biggest fugitive without even telling Pakistan or any of their security forces as the yanks didnt trust them with that info.

...It's all for PR ratings really ain't it? The US had to be seen to be doing the deed. Just like that stupid flag in the moon.

The lack of justice for victims in Iraq is conspicuous by its absence.

Well we can expect planes to start falling from the sky and people getting blown up on their way to work again. F**k him though, i hope it hurt.

Massive PR stunt IMO. Until there is sufficient evidence (which there never will be) to show he's dead it could all just be a load of balls.

That pic was also shown in 2009 when there were rumours he had been killed.

Same bad photoshop.

Give it a few hours, the US won't be able to resist "leaking" some pics.

It is not the end of terrorism, but a step in the right direction. It also shows that Pakistan can not be trusted as an ally. The political implications will be big for the US President, that being said I don't think it was done just to score political points. The end of terrorism will come when everyone thinks they have all they deserve.
