Flooding Option
It seems it is back to Plan B as the Balearic Government continues to seek a solution
to the constant flooding on the Ibiza-airport road.
The original plan was to pipe the water down towards the sea, but this was rejected
by most of the administrations which were required to give the green light,
including the Coastal Authority and Island Council.
As a consequence Jaume Carbonero, the Balearic Minister for Transport,
explained his department would be opting for the "other" plan which is
to create a huge pond next to the road into which all of the excess water will run.
This will then be slowly pumped into the main sewage system.
The minister explained that this option caused far less environmental damage
and he remained confident it would be approved by all sides.
The pond will be 120 metres long and 78 metres wide, (a total of 17,160 m2),
and be able to hold 43,000 cubic metres of water, approximately five times more
than the pond which is currently in place.
The project will also create a green area around the pond to create a screen,
including 25,300 plants of thirteen different local types.
The pond will be able to cope with around 178 litres of water per m2
over a 24-hour period, claiming the last flooding was caused as a result
of just 98 litres of water per m2.
The water collected will then be drained into the municipal sewage system
over a 30 hour period to ensure it is able to cope.
The only concerns over the project, which will cost around €1.5 million,
are complaints from the Airport Authority, (AENA), that the pond and plants
could attract birds to the area.
AENA made a similar objection about the proposed Matutes golf course
which was eventually stopped.
However, local councillor Albert Prats, said he did not foresee this as being a problem
as the ponds would only be full after heavy rain, and the water would soon be removed.
