Vinyl vs CD vs Laptop

Right,

This is a laptop DJ for you (5x DMC World Champion DJ Craze) and - as I will explain he is not playing records he is a Laptop DJ :

IMHO
If you are a boring Laptop DJ it wouldn't make any difference if you play CDs or 12"s

If you are an exciting DJ on CDs or 12"s then you can be a very exciting DJ on Laptop.

I think the term "Laptop DJ" should be explained a little better...

This is my mini potted history.

  • Years ago people started on 12"s.
  • Learn and develop their tricks and skills.
  • Very quickly Technics 1210s became the industry standard.

Then CD came out.

  • Alot of Wedding DJs went over to this playing off of home HiFi CD Players.
  • Than a few DJ CD players came out TECHNICS SL-P1200 was an early one and Denon Had an OKish unit
  • Most "Credible" DJs looked down on this and we were having this same discussion as now.
  • Then the pioneer cdj 1000 arrived.
  • Within a very short time a big % of DJ went over to CD. Some musical styles suited 12" like hip hop so they stick to it.

Now Laptop.

  • Same a CD, it has been around for several years and was kind of naff when it started and like CD the equipment was more for the home DJ/ Wedding DJ. So alot of people quite rightly slagged it off.
  • Then along came Serato and Traktor scratch pro. These did to the laptops what Technics 1210 did to 12"s and Pioneer CDJ 1000 Did to the CD.

IMHO

Serato:
is aimed at the "Old School" DJ (hip hop...) 2 turntables and a couple of tricks. You controll this with "time-coded" 12"s or CDs
So if you don't know it will look like the DJ is playing 12"s or CDs.

Traktor scratch pro( I Use This ).
Is aimed at the more technical DJ. It has 4 decks on it, loops efects and a massive bag of magic tricks. Again it is controll with "time-coded" 12"s or CDs
So if you don't know it will look like the DJ is playing 12"s or CDs.

The future.

For me it is Traktor scratch pro with 4 decks playing at onse with a controller unit.
looping and sampling 4 tracks at once.

Next time you go to see
carl cox
pete tong
or any big name DJ, it might look like CDs or 12"s but look for the laptop.

At the end of the day....

It is what comes out of the speakers and how the DJ rocks the room.
How the music gets to the speaker is up to the DJ.

Ones I was talking about are people who just use a laptop like the wedding DJ's you mentioned. I like wax that my story and I'm sticking to it.

He should be banned from ever touching that program again, I tell you!

Why do you say that?

I started in the laptop era of DJing, and have actually found myself moving back. Got a set of CDJs, and then got a set up Vinyl. But i'm awful on my Vinyl, so hardly go on it.

a lot of releases are now digital only so i guess this sort of debate is becoming increasingly redundant.

this format makes little or no money so i guess far fewer people can produce on a full time basis. gone are the days when the avergage sh*t dance track shifted 20,000 vinyl units coining the artist £2 a piece.

i guess this has had an impact on quality as people can no longer afford expensive mastering sudios? on the flip, people are doing it for the love & not the £ $ s .

Why do you say that?
Because his constant screwing around can be painful to listen to.

As discussed earlier in the thread, just because the technology lets you do something, doesn't necessarily means you should do it. Let the music play...

Very true, Vinyl, for what you get, is extortionate.

I've got a Deadmau5 remix of Pjanoo, single sided, with a single track on it. Cost me £5.

I can easily buy 3 - 4 tunes (at the least) for that much

it's worth 10p max. you won't be listening to that in 6months time. FACT. and it will have no sell-on value

the point is there is a multi-tier vinyl market.

at the bottom end, there still are mass produced dance singles, in the main probably gathering dust in the few remaining high street record shelves still doing business.

at the other end of the scale there are strictly limited collectible series of singles, maybe only 200 pressed in total with loving attention, a nice sleeve with notes and of real durability. claremont 56 for instance, the current kings of the balearic sound.

then at the extreme end of the scale the hyped-into-orbit labels like whateverwewant who expect you to part with £35 for one of their laughing light of plenty albums, which is ludicrous, but that's what happens when a massively hyped release is in short supply or only available in Japan. classic inflationary economics for you there kids.

planet e have re-released some of their classics, again not cheap but quality is assured - you really need to decide what sounds you need to hear on vinyl and whether it is worth it, because like everything else, you have to pay inflated prices for quality now.

Exactly mate, just because you cant doesnt mean you should imo.

That is the problem with vinyl, full stop.

You need to get your 5 quids worth out of it and have done.

The industry relies on wannabe DJs whether it be Wax, CD or compressed file. All the main DJs get sent hundreds of promos etc every week. They are the ones who then have the luxury of thumbing through the "rarities" and paying the £35 at the top of the pyramid.

I remember spending £80 - £100 a month over a period of 3/4 years for tunes that were always "seven fifty" at the specialist shops. Now you can have your tracks digitally for say, £1.80 at most.

Anyone sympathise with this purchaser

For this reason digital DJing is a no brainer

I know what you mean mate. I need to have a clear out of my Vinyl as I just dont have the room for it any more I have some keepers but there is probably 2-3000 that need to go and are basically worthless to anyone apart from the sentimental value to me.

You forgot Ableton, good enough for:

Sasha
Nick Warren
Deadmau5
Daft Punk
Coldcut
Darren Price
Gabriel &Dresden
Henrick Schwarz
Hot Chip
Digweed
Pete Tong
Rennie Pilgrem
Richie Hawtin

... to name just a few!

Sasha doesn't use Ableton anymore, he has been back on CDJ's for over a year now. Neither does Nick and last time i saw Digweed he was on CDJ's too.

My view is that it doesn't matter what setup you use, at the end of the day its about the music and how well the set is structured........moving with the times, which obviously allows technological advances like live redits and loops etc, is important....but a lot of people jumped on the 'laptop' bandwagon and it had, in my opinion, a negative affect on their performance. Sasha is the best example of this. Far too many Ableton sets just don't sound right....they sound flat, too over produced and too overly complex.

A good record is a good record....let it play.

My missus eyes my vinyl but I told her that was here before you will have to tear it from my cold dead hands. I have look at serrato, I have a CDJ and use it. I just started with wax and I feel more comfortable and enjoy it more. I have some promo that are utter crap but I did get alot of good stuff. I paid for a record pool $250 a month which prevented me from buying alot of records.

I just love the feel of playing off vinyl more than anything tbh! But Ill be the first one to admit there are some right howlers in amongst the good so I need to filter it out and just keep the s stuff I still like. I do like going through it every now and then just to see how my musical tastes have changed in 13 odd years! Its like a Musical Map of my life!
