Veils on women

ok then, how's this: hannah, I want to ban you from wearing a bikini because the majority of my country think that they are offensive and find it uncomfortable to speak to people in them.

Why is that wrong whilst banning veils right?

Many country's do frown upon bikinis and shorts. Often Muslim countries. No one questions this.

I'm not sure I agree the validity of the argument "in other countries this happens". A lot of things happen in other countries, it doesn't mean it's right for us to emulate them in the UK.

when that geezer from parliament first started this discussion it was not trying to ban veils, simply to state he did not feel comfortable with talking to someone who is wearing one. What is wrong with that?

He also stated that it was a form of seperation, which it is in a british country it is.

Obviously people can wear what they want, but for certain things they should be removed. If everyone is a meeting waring suits it looks pretty stupid if a women is wearing a veil trying to argue she does not feel part of society

When we communicate we use the face as recognition and the focul point when conversing, the veil obstructs this and by hiding the face people can find it frightening, the same cant be said of Hannah in a bikinni. who could find that offensive !(or anyone else come to think it)...unless its me wearing one of course, but then again thong bikinis arnt my style8O 8O 8O 8O .

if there are rules preventing cycle helmets in banks and hooded tops in shopping centres, then it is logical to ban veils

I think we are going round in circles and the subject is now becomming a little tedious:spank:

:D :D :D :D :D

...says the Aussie  ;)

But you're right: the UK should do what's right for itself. Something that'll make a difference in people's lives. Forget that you can wear it elsewhere in Europe, with their fancy beaches and warm, sunny weather. In the UK, you should Ban the Bikini!!!!

I try to keep my face as uncommunicative as possible so that people are forced to focus on the words

Wait... I wonder... would wearing a veil improve your odds when playing poker? Talk about a poker face!

Hannah, I read your article in the blog.

I see what you are saying. In my experiences of living overseas where I had to learn a new langauge I agree with much of what you say... you have to do it because there is no other way.

I like living in a country that (supposedly ) does cater towards its immigrants.

I get even more sick of Canadians who think people should act "Canadian'... whatever thats supposed to mean, 'Real' Canadians arent' Asian, European or African so i hate the fact that some people define Canada with a smiling blue-eyed white person ....most people's relatives only came here for 200 years ago.

Sure, when I go to Asia, or the middle east, or where ever, i find out about the local customs and try to respect that....I just don't think that 'we ' have any set standards of how everyone is supposed to act or what they are supposed to wear... so it IS different in this situation when people move here

I forgot to add some things to my post which may have made people take it the wrong way..
"Real ' canadians are the ones who have lived here for thousands of years...the native people...... (First Nations) the ones that get the most discrimination dumped on them by everyone who's just recently moved here and stolen their land!

In no way is Canada blue eyed and blonde... I hope my post didn't come across as real Canadians aren't this or that ... my bad..

Canada IS different from England... so thats why I feel differently about it.

There's no such thing as Canadian food really its all Thai or Vietnamese or Ethiopian or whatever...If I was eating Canadian food I'd be eating moose meat and bannock (which is actually really tasty !)

Oh to add to your post Im not sure if your questions were directed at me, but I'll answer my opinion anyway.. you asked why whould britain adopt any other cultures traditions?

First of all, I dont' like the idea of banning "Happy Christmas" at school .Luckily we haven't come to that stage yet.

A good friend of ours who is Muslim is on the local PTA at the school I went to and it was HIM who pushed for still allowing Christmas and Easter celebrations in the schools. He thought it was great that his kids grow up learning about other peoples celebrations.. and I for one, beleive that is wonderful.

I remember talking about Hannukah and Ramadan celebrations ... and Christmas and Easter...we also celebrated Ukranian Christmas and Chinese new year when I was at school too... and I remember thinking that was really neat.

As I said in another thread, I personally don't like the Canada flag wearing muppets... but I think THEIR reasoning is that they are proud of Canda because it is a 'mosaic' as they like to call it, of cultures..

Its not all happy camping though, there are plenty of bigots, racists and rednecks all over the place here ... just have a look at our lovely prime minister

I guess the way I see it is, is that over time, countries do change, they are taken over, at war, new people move in and out, this has been going on all over the place for thousands of years. ... people have to adapt and change.. I like seeing a multitude of people in one place, I think it just makes everything more colourful.

When people can't say "Happy Christmas' that makes me sad... banning Christmas trees Christmas celebratiions... I agree with you... that part is ridiculous... and I think its sad that you can't celebrate English culture, as you put it

The fact is though... many people from different countries HAVE moved to England.. What do you want out of it? I'm sure you like some aspects of having a more multi-cultural society.. do you really want to 'ban' the good that HAS come out of living in a more multicultural society?.. If it was up to you, how would you like it to be?

Don't worry, not all English culture has gone down the train, my little cousins in England were the may queens in their town so there is somthing left  ;)
