Tulum

Drugs = Money = Violence. The world over. Regular posters on the various tripadvisor boards suggest it's not escalated more than usually for Mexico. Who knows?

The poster on reddit seems a bit of bellend. Maybe they wanted cheap 2022 silver plastic crowns and such...

The area is apparently very over-priced for everything.

you could replace the word Tulum with Ibiza in the reddit post and would be about the same lol.

taxi prices have gotten out of control in Tulum that's for sure.

The person in that Reddit post is complaining about testing and taking 30 minutes to get into a NYE party.

the afterlife Zamna party reviews in the same thread were positive.
The only thing people reviewed as positive was the music at Afterlife.
The complaint is no about testing. The whole testing thing in Tulum is fake and a huge money laundering operation for the cartels. Just read the subreddit and the replies.

Absolutely disagree.
You should read more posts and replies before saying this is just business as usual and comparable to Ibiza. It's not.
Fake covid tests, fake results, money laundering for the cartels, shootings on beaches. But hey, I'm not against anyone going to Tulum, just sharing the concerns here. Do as you wish with it.

I did read the whole thread on reddit and i've been to both (tulum/pdc and Ibiza) many times/recently so I know what the deal is. Not trying to say Tulum and Ibiza are the exactly same but complaining about lines, taxi prices and drink prices people do every year in Ibiza as well. the whole Covid test thing does sound like a money grab and not providing real results in some cases.

Um yeah, judging events off Reddit is a bad idea. The op in that thread sounded like some random tourist who expected to hear Top 40 and a ball drop.

Taxi’s have gotten expensive, but oh well.

Testing for events seemed fair. Can you get a fake by bribing the cartel? Probably, but who cares??

The fact of the matter is these parties are the best open air parties there are, and the minor headaches are worth it. Wish I went this year.

Sounded like the Space closing party 🙃🙃 The world is struggling with staffing, if you work in an industry that isn't then you're lucky. Thankfully there are not many shootings in ibiza (certainly the ones we know about) but there is plenty of drug related violence.

Look at places closer to home, Holland for example to see excellent parties with violence on the outsider from the people fueling it.

A younger me would probably be at these parties. Boring me will probably lay the beach or visit Mayan temples

Feel sorry for all the kids for Europe who have no doubt spent probably close to £1000 on flights / hotels alone - sure there will be some parties but not the same

For those thinking about Tulum either this season or the next....check out Reddit as a source of information.
To me, it doesn't look good. Mexican druglords fighting with each-other and with Israeli maffia, tourists overpaying for everything and getting scammed with fake Covid tests to enter the cartel run events...not even talking about the covid situation and cancellations.

my idea of hell, for at least 25 interconnecting reasons

off-topic since it's the tulum thread, but if you consider the amount of visitors ibiza gets in a normal season and how much substances are around, the violent incidences are absolutely nil. it's something that has fascinated me ever since day one, how peaceful ibiza is given how many people visit.

as for latest festie cancellations...

that's what I thought too. but then again, after two years of pandemic we've somehow gotten used to not taking anything for granted.

and as for tulum, funny how quickly it's gotten just as expensive (or even more?) as ibiza and also very very jet-setty eh. sure, the outdoor parties are enticing, but from everywhere I hear you need very deep pockets to actually be able to enjoy it over there these days.

I’d say Tulum is similar in pricing to Ibiza and it’s been that way for awhile unfortunately. Where you can save some money in comparison is in drinks and accommodation. You can still get a really nice Airbnb with friends for a reasonable price, so you really don’t need that deep pockets unless you want to go to the best restaurants and stay right on the beach. If you can afford Ibiza you can afford Tulum imo.

But I’m glad that Costa Rica and Playa del Carmen is giving Tulum some competition. Much needed.

Never got the appeal of tulum for the parties. Looks like every party is very sterile and is tailored for the instagram crowd. The prices alone attract that crowd. Looks like the same crowd that populate the bonecca parties in london.

Mexicos covid number yesterday, Jan 11: 44 678 new infections, highest number in pandemic so far. And for weeks now experts have warned about exactly this omicron wave in January. To go partying there now is completely beyond me. I don't feel for anyone being so naive to have booked that for lots of money and having expected anything different.

the types of people who go to these things - and yes I'm sure that includes some of you - would have watched the Fyre doc and chortled like everybody else at the sheer Spinal Tap nonsense of it all, all those exclusive VIP wrist passes and bikinis in paradise, and then without any irony whatsoever booked tix themselves to similar exotic locales a few weeks later. then the pandemic more seriously came along and exposed just how completely amoral the organi$ers are, creating a toxic industry where rich kid tourists are financing charlatans, attracting gangsters and infecting locals. And all for what, just to get a selfie under a palm tree? it's all fraudulent bullshit and it's time people stood up and said so.

I lived in Tulum back in 2015 for a few months … was just before the big hype!
Tulum has been know as a special place for 2 decades easily…but to compare to Ibiza 🧐 I’m not sure … it has change a lot but take in mind that the punter there are 70% or even more of American and Canadian ! Nothing against it , but most of them don’t have the European techno and house rave culture we have since the 80’s… well during my time prices were ok for accommodation and food IF living downtown, but staying in a "hotel" ( it’s more wood cabana ) on the beach were already really really expensive and for really basic cabana ( same as in Thailand for exemple but 10 times more expensive)
Nowadays where ever you will stay you will have to pay a lots for everything… party are great can’t denied but taking about safety, you can’t really not compare to Ibiza , Ibiza is 1000 times safer than Tulum … don’t forget that some cartels are really present in those party( even some are involved) and this can turn really bad ( bpm playa del carmen few years ago if some remember 🙈)
Ps : departure was not cancelled because of omicron … something else , I let u guess …
