I said I doubted french drink more then brits. She showed the stadistics and that was really surprising for me cos brits seem to drink lots more than french (and as I said before I know both countries to make such a comment). So if french drink more but brits seem to drink more there's something wrong. That was my point

I don't want to start an arguement with you Silvia, but I am actually really surprised that you have written that.

On more than one occasion on this board you have taken exception at people writing things about the Spanish being rude or aggressive (quite rightly). Yet you think it is ok to call all English or British people uncilvilised and tell them to go and learn how to behave like the French.

Scoobie for your comment I guess I can't make an ironic comment about english? From me it was a joke, if you take it personally it's not my problem altho I didn't want to be offensive with anyone

In a bid to not disappoint Buckleys image of me :lol: I just looked up the WHO figures for average alcohol consumption. The uk at 10.4 litres came in below both spain (12.3) and France (13.5).

I think if you look at this from the eyes of British person you could see how it could cause offence.

But I think things have been exacerbated because it's rumbled on bit with you thinking Scoobie was criticising your grammar.

silvia don't worry I'm not offended ;) and if anyone else had written it I wouldn't have been so surprised.

It is just because you have in the past defended the Spanish against any kind of comments/jokes. Uncivilised is a pretty strong word to use- although I guess it might not be in Spanish.

like I said- no offence caused though ;)
 
I think it's once again a case of lost in translation.

I think Sil was meaning to say that us Brits should learn to hold our drink like the French, because they drink more than us, yet are much more civilised in the way that they drink, which, in all honestly, is quite a fair point as the majority of Brits do let the rest of us down with their drunked antics.

I don't think it was aimed personally at you Scoobs, although I have seen you in a few un-civilised states ;)

Scoobie, the most surprising thing of it is that you lot seem to accept jokes and sarcastic comments from everywhere and for once I go a bit further then I go wrong. 8O But that's typical from me and specially this week that I'm being really inopportune, thanks god tomorrow is friday 8O :lol:
I don't accept topics and generalisations about anything, but I'm the first to make jokes about my own country and myself and my permanent state of confusion and all that. And if I'm not wrong I've always been very polite and discret about english abroad and all, so a bit of inocent pressumption or however you spell it would be nice.

Next time, me and my english would really apreciate if you can point me out that I had choosen a wrong word or make a very silly comment, I would put lots of red faces and you can make jokes later but my confusion won't increase ;)

Firstly- like I said I am neither offended or trying to start an arguement. I have a lot of respect for what you write and that is why your comment surprised me. Also- like I said -I AM NOT making a joke of your english, and you have not written anything that looks silly. This is really not a big thing, and like I said if it had come from anyone else I would not even have commented. ;)

My point was only that you have very often taken offence at people writing sterotypical or derogatory comments about the Spanish, and I was just a bit surprised that having done that you would write one yourself about another country.

I took Sil's comment as a little offensive but i saw it as a light hearted comment.

Having said that, i liked the fact Scoobie replied in an equally light hearted albeit sarcastic way. The sarcasm was in fact necessary to get the point across without causing offence.

Hope that makes sense.

I had clear from few posts before you are not offended :lol: :lol:

But Scoobs, I lived 5 months in Paris and six in London my comment came from my personal experience, and I actually tried to say it in that infamous, incivilised first comment from me but I had a very bad yesterday and I couldn't bother to fit it in my sentence ;)
 
Drew, can you please remember that I'm not english and that sometimes I can go wrong choosing words or understanding things?

Really, I said it before, but I would really apreciate that if you see me saying something that can be offensive or really wrong let me know but in a very direct and educative way, cos most times it's a problem of translation. I think that would make things esier for everyone ;)

And that includes other non anglosaxon members

But really, next time you see me making acomment that can be offensive please point it to me cos if it's a translation mistake or something like that I would really apreciate. Si?
