SPTL086: Derrick May

French Kiss was by Lil Louis (as far as I'm aware HIS main crime is just being a greedy b'stard..)

Boycotting tunes... Hmm. Where does it start/end though?

Last time i saw Morillo, he played the orgasm from French Kiss on a loop for about 5 minutes and killed the dancefloor stone dead. Weird behaviour

It's a really complicated area. Many DJs who wouldn't play Gary Glitter would still play MJ. You could argue MJ made superior music but then it's no longer a point of principle. In dance music, should Positiva be expected to delete all the Reel 2 Real stuff? With the Detroit veterans, many collaborated on each other's work. Are we then logically saying that all detroit techno is cancelled?

I'm curious...sincerely curious when someone is 'a sex pest'.
Cause I've now seen the term pass by twice, in both the Morillo thread and here. I've seen some crazy parties, dj booths, backstages and afterparties and I must say there's always some sort of flirting going on. A lot of male dj's love some barely clothed girls in or near the booths and the same girls like to be backstage, vip or in the booth dancing against the dj, flirting with him, taking selfies etc.

If the Dj goes along with this behavior...this game of give and take...(not including harassment or rape off course, please don't try put my words in the wrong context)...is he a sex pest? I've seen someone commenting about Morillo licking girls boobs in the dj booth. Well if that was with consent from both I don't see what's wrong with it and I don't feel that makes someone a sex pest. If he does it all the time with everyone and without consent...another story.

While no one should be forced to do anything or be touched or groped without consent...the other side of the medal is a return to a really prudish society. We've seen that happening on the beaches too. In the past so many women were not afraid to sunbathe topless and now it's almost disappeared completely. Also dressing up sexy in the streets sometimes gets disapproved.

We sometimes go to parties and festivals like Milkshake, Wasteland etc...where the atmosphere is a bit hedonistic, sexy, horny..no one would bat an eye if a dj licks someone boobs or slap an ass there. In fact no one would bat an eye if he licked a boob and the boob turns out to belong to a trans woman because it's all very diverse, LBGTI friendly, multicultural, I would even say feministic but in a way that the women there know what they want and don't want. The last few years I felt the house music scene was really open minded and especially with the usage of some drugs fun and sexy stuff just happened on the dance floor.

I just hope we're not mistaken normal human behavior of men and women, including dj's, together dancing and having some fun with being a sex pest. Being a sex pest for me is harassing other people, doing things they clearly don't want, sexual assault, rape.

The allegations against May & Morillo are both definitely harassment, sexual assault and rape levels.

I don't think anyone is getting confused here

I am. The allegation against Morillo is rape. Ok clear, no confusion.
But then stuff what you could call 'additional evidence' or 'painting an image' of him a "sex pest" that everyone knew about for years. Same happening now with May it seems. So when is it just men and women having fun...and when is it being a sex pest?

MeToo was confusing too. After the first few coming outs...it exploded. What behavior in the scene do we consider as normal or not normal, seems like a good thing to discuss.

Yeah he did that at Elrow NYC too. Killed the dance floor indeed. Now we think it's weird because of the image we have of him but if it was Carl Cox that played with the orgasm sample no one would talk about it now.

Ida Engberg said he put MDMA in her drink and made her drink it at a party where he only wanted women who were going to get naked to stay.
The DJ in NY where she worked in a record store and said Erick Morillo would come in, phone and leave disgusting voice messages, rub his penis on her bum.

I can't see any kind of 'blurriness' there

The charges being brought against Ron Jeremy are certainly interesting. Where do you start to draw the margins there?

Is the fact he was a prolific porn star damning corroborating evidence or character support? Or do you have to ignore it completely?

That's a bit in the direction I'm aiming at. Charges against him just keep on coming now.

So let's say Morillo says: only the girls who will get naked can stay at my afterparty...and there are girls who get naked because they want to stay...do we think it's okay if they would now come out and say: Yeah Morillo was a sex pest, he wanted us naked?

(not talking about rape, MDMA in drinks etc., it's about the image that gets created and people jumping on the bandwagon)

But sex offenders are very good at building an image. Look at the Jimmy Saville case, he was friends with the prime minister, royal family, biggest TV star at the time. He did a lot of work for charity and raising money. All of that was a cover so he would be trusted with access and responsibility that made it easy for him to abuse children.

So it is easy to say 'Oh that is just blah blah, wild DJ' but of course it is all part of their thing. And of course they can potentially easily wave off any claims and say its harmless fun, lots of girls were there enjoying it.

You say not talking about those incidents but you either take everything into account or don't.

I guess women DJs and journalists are in the same position as female pornstars. At the time they know or very likely think that who is going to believe them over the big famous star? There is some stuff around the Derrick May thing from (at the time) a young female dance music journalist who was just starting out. I think she even said she was 'discouraged' from speaking out at the time by her bosses because she'd likely ruin any chance of a career in dance music. If even Heidi Lawden is saying the same thing of thing, and she has no axe to grind or publicity to gain we should listen to these people.

Yeah, and lots of paedophiles manage to maintain legal relationships concurrent with their crimes. Being legit in one aspect of your life, doesn't negate the crimes
