Right guys Ive just been informed I'm being made redundant...

still seems hit and miss regarding the need for a contract.

i know 10-15 people who have got an NIE this year with no contract.....as it is getting so busy now, they might use that rule to filter applicants.

if you find a job, then they can give you a pre-contract saying that you've got the job and you need you NIE

as for a gestor, there are many. do a search for gestor ibiza, they nearly all speak english and NIE is a common process for them. you'll find that many estate agents also provide the service.

it also needs to be made clear that prob 30-40% of the jobs in san an operate without an NIE. obviously it's not official but thousands work in that way each year, for bars, clubs, promoters, etc, etc

so my advice would be to get out here and cross the bridges as they go.

good luck, sure you'll have a blast.

That is sooo true - I have noticed loads of my mates are really starting to take control of their lives during this recession, whether it be tightening their belts generally, getting allotments (jeez how many people do I know who have got an allotment recently ) and growing their own veg etc etc

From work, I have had 5 people who have gone and taken gardening leave, had a good think about what they want and have resigned, gone travelling, gone for a simpler lifestyle etc etc.

Its given people an opportunity to take stock of their lives and whats really important - its empowered people to think/do for themselves !

Ryan - Good Luck mate - I wish you all the luck in the world - 8)

Well, for me it's been the best thing to happen. Dj gear prices went down, and I have a job, so, I was able to buy heaps of top notch stuff dirt cheap. Infact as a nightclub entertainment entity, we are ALMOST completely self reliant now. As in, we can put on our show at any night club, bar, house, etc etc, anywhere with electricity and a table. And it's become a good show aswell.

Housing prices have dropped also so, I may be able to put a deposit on one soon hopefully, and the business I work for is actually in a good place. I over heard our quotes guy just a few minutes ago before I left saying how we've been having record numbers and may have to look at employing more help!

I think, and always have, it's the exact thing society needs to be honest. Ok it's sad people are out of work, but I think they'll kick back stronger than before.

If you wanted to move out here and not work - say for instance you bought an old property to renovate to live in, had funds to live on etc etc - do you still need paperwork to be a resident on the Island?

You need a NIE to buy a house or car, have a phone and quite a lot of other things.
No big deal to get one though.

the nie is a reference number for all your tax and national insurance affairs. if you live on the island permanently you must have a residence certificate which is yet another paper chase which you can do yourself if you have all the time and patience in the world and good command of spanish language and bureaucracy - otherwise employ a gestor to do it for you.

the NIE and resident certificate are practically the same process.

when you apply to get the resident's certificate, they give you an NIE automatically. you don't need to prove where you live or anything when you apply, just proof you are an EU citizen and that's about it.

no matter what the circumstances (i did in on a cold, rainy day in january), it is always a horrible experience at the police station.

Yeah my friend said it wasnt nice she went for hers very very early in the morning and she said people just pushed infront of you and they only see approx 15 people a day there so get there early and be prepared!!

As someone said before most workers dont even get an NIE (i didnt) and got along fine without one. My friends boss was very strict with stuff like this but also looked after his workers very well, so really depends who you work for. He even sorted his PR street passes for them. good bloke he was, no messing with him at all.

I have nothing to offer in the way of help, but all I want to say is good on you for doing something positive about it!

This recession has given people different opportunities! ;)

Take the job. Might be the boring option, but this country is in tatters. I know an increasing number of capable/well educated people finding it near impossble to get jobs. Unemployment in Ireland is also now reaching joke levels and they are starting to head this way in their droves as they did in the 80s. Only this time they are armed with suits and laptops as opposed to shovels. The 'green shoot' stories are a complete blag.

Follow you're heart, not your head - you never know where it might lead.

If the economy is as bad as everyone says (and as bad as I think) - then no f*cker is going to have a job or savings in a few years ...which means the chances of you going off on a jaunt will be significantly reduced.

Also - the 9-5 grind is completely meaningless unless you've got kids or are doing something that is your absolute passion. Decades fly by and before you know it you've wasted your life.

Earning money for financial status (because that's what everyone else does so therefore you 'should') is BOOOOOOORING.

   but don't listen to me because I'm never sensible when it comes to these things. ;)

Sounds like good advice to me.

If I hadn't had kids, I wouldn't be doing what I do nor be where I am (and the decades have gone by, big time )

I'll be back on the island in two days for my usual Ibiza Fix.

Thanks to all for the previous advice. :)
