Politics - UK - 2017

I wasn't having a go at the kids. I was one of them myself once! if someone offers you sweeties and sounds sincere about it, of course you'll flock to their rallies. I'd be at the front. seriously. especially if the alternative is is dull and reminds you of your strict parents.

jeez I went to hundreds of NUS events at that age. you join all sorts of societies, because you want discounts, you want to get laid, you want a free hoodie, you want an ISIC card that will get you cheap travel. the idealism gets overplayed. there were a few fringe groups for weirdos who actually 'like' cared about the world and stuff but most 18 years I knew were into music, cannabis and burgers in a bap. same as it ever was.
sounds to me like someone got old and cynical ;) but I still don't think you can put a 72% turnout down to someone offering a free hoodie

more likely that they young realised they slept on brexit and got fu<ked over, and so with a bit of a push in the right places, this time they got up and made sure that didn't happen

I was out in Hove last night as the exit polls were announced and got talking to a large group of 18-20 year olds who had volunteered 2 weeks of their time to go out knocking on doors encouraging people to vote and not for any particular party. I was very impressed with their enthusiasm, especially giving up 2 weeks of their Summer for no obvious reward. When I asked them what had fuelled their interest in politics, they responded overwhelmingly that they had felt let down by the older generation over Brexit, and felt that they needed to have their voices heard for the sake of their futures. This may be the one positive that I can take from Brexit, that perhaps it has shocked the younger generation into getting more involved. It certainly left me feeling heartened after the depressing last 18 months in politics.

...And the Tories entering govt with the DUP. The media needs to go to town on that bunch of c****. Sectarian, rascist, anti-gay UKIP x 100
The ironic thing is that the tories spent the last few months accusing corbyn of being a terrorist sympathiser, then they go and link up with this lot.

i've belatedly realised you're just a troll, angling for continual confrontation.

I won't rise to it.

That's a bit rich coming from you? Have a look at your last few posts, hardly engaging. It seems like you're still trying to work out why corbyn done so well. Along with the tired old political commentators who didn't predict brexit or trump and we're well off the mark with their predictions for the GE. It must be because the youth were thrown a promise of free education... ?

Corbyn got the votes because he offered a future for the many not just a few.....

Corbyn played a decent hand on the run up. May was a disaster. She needs to go. Damaged goods now.

Ultimately though. Labour lost. And have far fewer seats than the Conservatives. I think because they didn't get totally smashed people have got excited.

I'm sure the seat count without checking isn't far away from what happened in 2010. And Brown had to go.....

Corbyn increased Labour’s share of the vote more than any other leader in any other election since Attlee in 1945.
Let's not forget how far behind Labour were (after Brown and Milkiband) and how everyone predicted they'd be even further behind yesterday morning. Its a huge achievement and it wouldn't have happened without Corbyn, chiefly because we wouldn't have had that manifesto without Corbyn.

Also with regards to the "the Tories won, Labour lost" thing, as straightforward as that sounds it isn't (this is not the same as saying "Labour won").

The Tories lost 13 seats. They lost their majority.

Labour gained 30 seats. And they're still behind. That's how far back they were.

And people are forgetting what happened in Scotland for some reason. Tory gains because of the SNP insistence on pushing the independence issue and because of the weird obsession of Scottish Labour with the SNP (Dugdale actually encouraging Tory votes to keep out the SNP Jesus Christ).

An inspired campaign. Great manifesto. Engaging the youth. All against a terrible, uninspiring Mrs May with a suicide note for a manifesto.

Still less seats and still less votes. Labour lost against the Conservatives.

Don't get me wrong. I'd like to see May and Hammond go. Seems unlikely at the moment.

If we had another election tomorrow then I've no idea what I'd do. I feel it's important to vote as some people don't get the opportunity.
