Police Presence increases?

I went in early September and the police presence was minimal. A question though- why aren't the scores of 'lucky lucky' guys that line the streets of San An subject to such searches? Pay offs perhaps?

Yes, and it is so obvious as well, that my partner and I concluded that they must have some kind of deal going on with the guardia. Quite clearly they are not selling jewellery.

And yes, it is a risk using illegal drugs - in whichever country - and if you use drugs then you have to take this on board, but I agree with all those who have pointed out that it is a breach of one's civil rights to be strip searched and worse outside a nightclub.

oh and i forgot to mention that over the last month there was a big police campaign to clean up playa den bossa after many complaints by local traders about drinking drugs and violence (mostly by spanish youths, particularly from valencia)

There is a lot of sense in the quote by Stephen, most of the youths being pulled over in PDB when we were watching from a bar were indeed Spanish, in fact we were sitting in the Tantra bar and the Local Policia were using the forecourt of the bike rental shop to search the people they were stopping at the roadblock. Very few seemed to be foreign nationals that we could see.
Never saw any in-depth body searches either....just emptying of pockets and frisking of people, but lots of stripping out of car interiors with spare wheels and car mats being tossed across the path.
The guys who work at Tantra pulling in the punters reckoned that the clubs themselves are almost bulletproof with the local authorities, they told us that the police were told to lay off of the clubs as they were deemed ultra important to the local tourist industry, makes sense when you think about it.
Not sure how true this is but they seemed very sure of what they were saying.....

Also....is there any truth in that the Space building (not the Space organisation itself...just the building) is owned by the Fiesta Hotel Group?....Heard it from one of our hotel receptionists but didn't sound true to us...anyone have facts on this?

It might breach Civil Rights in certain countries....but are you sure this is the case in Spain?....Not all countries are so hot on Civil Rights.
We have been chuckling to ourselves about how people would fare in a country like Turkey with all this talk of searches for illegal substances, compared to Turkey Ibiza is a breeze....It would be beatings across the legs with nightsticks over there for drug possession in the street, the Police in Ibiza are pussycats....lol

Stephen,

You balst us on here for not liking 'other' aspects of Ibiza but then you show a completely closed minded view of clubbing.

Ok, it may not be to your taste, but it is to millions of people around the world.

i agree
Stephen i am truly disappointed in you on this issue
big time

you sell tickets to these clubs that you diss so much
you pretty much said that people deserve to be assaulted (including sexually) by the police for being around other people doing drugs

you act as an agent for many of these clubs
why do you not try and represent some of the outragous stories that have been told...

i have reassessed and i now think you are either silly, mental or just a nasty man....

drugs are cheap
alcohol in clubs in very expensive
pure economics make drug taking in ibiza more popular than it would otherwise be

what makes you think that you are so special that you can insult your clients in the way you have done in this thread?

why are you not using your position to improve the situation?
why are you not speaking to your MP, you councilperson and your local police chief to try and deal with the outrageous police violence ?

many people on here in their 30s and 40s take drugs and groove
most people who take drugs do it coz they like how it makes them feel not because they think it makes them look cool

your self righteous hypocrisy in awesome
you really need to take a long hard look at yourself
and in my opinion you need to grow up

What age are you living in? Your attitude is nothing short of outrageous.

It sounds as though you would be more than happy to walk down to the local market to buy yourself a slave to do the chores.

The same age as you....but myself, I am living in the REAL world, not some wonderful Utopia where everything is pretty pretty...

You need to realise that many countries, including several in the EU are not so hot on human rights as the UK, you must be living a sheltered life if you believe otherwise....it's got nothing to do with my attitude, it's just me being realistic and not living in the world of make believe.

Have you ever been to Turkey?....or to some of the ex Iron curtain nations such as the Czech Republic or Bulgaria?, the police there make the Spanish Civil Guardia look tame in comparison...they are years behind the UK on civil rights....and that is a fact, not arrogance.

We have witnessed first hand the incredible amount of financial investment going on in Prague and in Turkey, there are clubs...and big ones too, sprouting up all over Prague, it's fast becoming the new tourism hotspot for weekend jaunts and within a year or two there will be some very succesful clubs there....and the top DJ's will be queuing up to play them, because they all want to get in at the beginning of something new, and there are serious amounts of money being spent on clubs in Prague for instance.

And where there are clubs....there will be illegal substances, and where there are illegal substances there will be police forces not so hot on human rights as the UK...It's a harsh fact of life.

Have you ever had experience of the Police in Agai Napa in Cyprus?
Once again....not so hot on human rights when it comes to drugs on Greek sovereign land, we have seen it ourself several times in Cyprus, the Police all happy-smiley....until they find drugs on clubbers.

But you are missing the point, it's drug possesion in a country where drugs are illegal, it's their country not yours....you are guests in their country so you are living under their laws, so accept the risks of carrying drugs on Ibiza...or don't carry drugs....or don't visit the island.

for a start some of the stories posted relate to people who werent carrying drugs

the fact is if this kind of thing continues Uk (and other) ravers just won't go any more

the truth is that you completely miss the point
as does prohibition

and that'll be the last time i respond to you
i have a rule not to engage with facists

MissJ,

I really couldn't give a rats ass about the stance on human rights by the various police forces around the world.

What I do find incredible is that a (presumably) female poster thinks sexual assualt by police officers in the name of law enforcement is ok.

I will no longer respond to this particular forum troll.

i practically saw no guardia all holiday, except on saturday morning as a staggered past space with my new giant chuppa chup and mini-boombox...

as this appears to be a somewhat emotive subject perhaps we need to say that if you disagree with the thoughts, opinions, beliefs of another member, then there is another way to express that other than hurling insults and calling names.

thank you stephen.

please all keep the discussion on track. for the most part it has been extremely interesting.

cheers

I actually found the searches at DC10 on Monday to be perfectly reasonable - although I was expecting the worse.
They pounced on our taxi and I was sure I was going to be put in the back of a van and strip searched, but they just patted me down and asked me to clear my pockets. They even had a little giggle about my Craig David mask !

So I guess there are good cops and bad cops..... and I have seen the bad side of them as well !

At the CD10 closing, the GC were very much there... coming in around 4 pm, we were all pretty thoroughly searched the moment we sat up from our cab... underwear insides inclusive. For some reason, tho, they managed to not search a friends bag so you might think they were there for a bit of plain intimidation as well.

We left at around midnight, at which point the GC had moved their cars (about 5) and people (10-15) to the exit and were pulling in as many suspicious-looking ppl as they apparently could manage for searches. And slapping cuffs on those they busted. Never seen anything like it, it was like being on a movie set.
