Pete Tong - 20 years on radio 1

20 years at the helm depsite no musical ability (his own productions are gash), very basic mixing ability & no idea how to entertain a crowd. however, he is a very accomplished broadcaster & still listenable even now if you can withstand the occasional vomit on vinyl.

has done some commendable things along the way... The House Sound of Chicago, Vol. 1 (1986) was one of the first UK releases to expose this sound?

agreed ... a 6 music show would be a logical step... definitely too old for the R1 bass cannon generation.

* was listening to carl craig on 6 last night... one of the few to emerge from the many changes in dance music with a reputation fully intact.

Carl Cox still draws young and old. Pete Tong is a legend he has gone off the cliff, but he did sprout it's all gone Pete tong. I voted for You don't know me remix. This was banging in clubs in 99 in Germany/Belgium. brings back memories.

where's this from?

I think you guys have all got it wrong (hah) about Pete's weekly show.

I think it serves it's purpose exactly, which is to play new music (a lot of first plays) to a big audience covering a fairly wide list of genres. On top of that I think he has a good voice and personality for radio.

Sure I can see if you are mostly just a trance fan or mostly just a techno fan there are other choices out there that would better suit your desires, and many of those are actual mixed music shows, but for the newest and widest variety of music I challenge you to beat the Essential Selection. I mean in many cases you can't beat Pete because he has the records sent to him from the djs before anyone else in many cases. Not bad for a 50yr old dude

I have been a regular listener for a while are really one of the only things that I notice that the show lacks is trance. Because he supports all sorts of house, techno, and even prog and dubstep. Really there isn't much missing

From my own point of view, i tend to spend a friday night, once every month or two, driving back to Bristol.
Usually have Pete Tong on the radio, followed by the Judge if I got stuck in traffic.
Some of Pete's shows are a bit like 'wtf' but others I really enjoy.
It's allowed me to listen to some artists that I wouldn't necessarily go out and listen to (e.g. Pryda). I don't always enjoy what he plays (e.g. Dubstep, Drum & Bass) but it does give me some form of an insight into other music, which I wouldn't necessarily sit down and listen to at my PC.

I don't think anyone else could fill his Friday night time slot, not easily anyway.

I stuck the download up cos I'm nice see.

Might give it a go myself, but arsed? in 2011? not really
