Londons bid will use the more money than Paris or Madrid in "improvements".
so dont see what something like this does for Northern England/Wales/Scotland/N.Ireland, apart from taking their money away.

Yeah, the paris and madrid bids wouldn't change and improve the cities no where near as much as the london bid will if it wins.

There has been LOADS of regeneration in Northern English cities in the last few years 8O Look at Manchester,Liverpool,Leeds and Sheffield....Billions has been spent in these cities on new buildings, houses, retail, entertainment etc Leeds and Sheff were dirty northern industrial dumps and are now two of the most vibrant cities in the country :D

what about the London Eye or the..ahem...Millennium Dome?
they would have cost quite a bit, and they werent that long ago.
im sure theres more, but alas i live very far away from Englands capital.

but would it not do the same for other countries?

im just saying, as an example, that why should Scotlands tax money go to a place hundreds of miles away, and which wont generate any revenue for, apart from London?

what will the Olympics in London do for Scotland?

And Billions of tax pounds don't go to Scotland?

im not denying that, everyplace in the UK gets money.

completely different.

Where they want to put the olympics in London is in a slummy, run down, bad area...the olympics will regenerate it and improve a lot of peoples lives :D

Yes, that's the theory but they are not going to give a solution to that area, they are going to move the problem somewhere else.

I must comment that regeneration policies in the UK revolve not around simply improving building and infrastructure, but by generating and retaining wealth, creating education and employment opportunities through long term sustainable developments.

EG: It is a policy of many local authorities when awarding construction contracts in areas of social deprivation, to stipulate that the contractors involved must provide a certain amount of apprenticeships to local residents. Thus ensuring a real benefit is retained in the local community long after the building contractors have come and gone.

OK, this is the social policy, but what in this specific case, will it be like this?

Don't forget tourism kids, the Sydney olympics really boosted Australia and a tourist destination for AMericans and people in the South East Asia - benefitting the whole country.

The games legacy will include

A huge programme of urban and environmental regeneration.

The Olympic Park in east London would transform one of the city's most underdeveloped areas into a model for sustainable urban development, building inner city communities linked to sport, the environment and health.

London's blueprint for the Games contains a number of specific initiatives to achieve a sustainable legacy which improves the environment, health and quality of life for local communities.

These include:

Investment in public transport, sustainable design and best practice in construction to make London 2012 a low carbon Games

Hosting a zero-waste Games by avoiding landfill and using waste as a resource for recycling and re-use

Conserving biodiversity through the regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley creating the largest new urban park in Europe for more than 150 years and bringing people closer to nature

Transform peoples' lives through improving the social, physical and economic landscape in the poorest and most deprived areas of London

Inspire a new generation to greater sporting activity and achievement, helping to foster a healthy and active nation

To leave behind world-class sports facilities which meet a clearly defined sporting need and become the heart of existing communities;

To enhance the opportunities and support available to Britain's competitors across the range of Olympic and Paralympic sports;

To drive the regeneration of the east of London, delivering a high-quality environment for business and opportunities for local people

All quickly taken from the bid website...

I'd expect, and hope, that the private sector would be awarded contracts based upon similar concepts. The government would be foolish to miss the opportunity to create real chnage in these deprived areas.

I could be cynical and say that they won't do this. But based on the track record to date, regeneration is something this government seems to be getting right.

From someone who lived through, and actually worked at the Sydney games - it was a really amazing experience.. everyone wore a smile on their faces, parties every night, vast improvements to local infrastructure, 24 hour entertainment, it was just amazing.. so I hope my new home gets the games too :D

I wasn't in Barcelona during half of the games and it was just amazing :D

It didn't matter all the inconvenients cos it was just so much fun, thousands of people in the streets, thousands of things going on every single day and thousands of people saying nice things about our city :D

At the end of the day though Paris is going to win :(

And Europe then won't get another games until 2024 at the earliest. By then London will not be able to make another bid as all the land/areas that are available now will already have been redevloped for other use. What a shame :(

I was there for 3 weeks, it was amazing !!!! I also went to last years 8O and it was horrendous in comparison.

I don't think anyone will get near Sydney, it was run like clockwork and the facilities were unbelievable.

HOW BORING IS THIS VOTING THING BTW?

*yawns*

they take about a decade to press a button.
