it’s important to remember that the British music press in the 90s were staffed by people who had grown up pre-acid house and were absolutely terrified of anything dance or black or gay. In a way Oasis were the British equivalent of disco sucks in the US, 15 years earlier, a desperate last ditch attempt to reassert guitar dominance on pop culture. It was important to have personalities in music who could sell newspapers and magazines. The fact they were a poor 4-chord Slade ripoff act was irrelevant. What mattered to the media was that they were controversial, in a way that all those other student bands were not.
