Missing Madeline

I was in the big chill on sat too. It was absolutely rammed

The best time to go to The Big Chill is the weekend that they host their big festival (think its in August?). Me and Jon went there last year (to the pub I mean) and it was totally empty! Ordered a HUGE roast, it arrived in no time and Im sure the portions were bigger than normal! 8)

Nope, I don't. I have no reason, other than the fabricated fairytales that creationist religions have spouted thus far, to believe that if there is a creator he/she is benovelent.

Buckers, I cannot believe, as much of a cynic that you are, that if were every in such dire circumstances (god forbid you ever should be!) you wouldn't try every little bit of hope that you could, even if you didn't believe in it.

There's a difference between hoping for a certain outcome and praying for divine intervention. Innocent children starve daily despite the prayers of others, so I can't see 'hey big guy, buckers here, don't really think it's likely you exist, but do us a favour if you're there' working wonders.

No but if something mattered to you that much you would do whatever it takes to make it right, even doing things you dont believe in, non?

pub

I don't understand your point  If they were in the pub instead of going to church then I wouldn't blame them, in times of stress I always turn to wine

Their child went missing during a night at the pub. If they were at church their children could have been with them.

I'd not believe everything you read in the papers if I was you, they weren't out for a night in the pub

If I thought there was any hope it might work then yes. But I believe that standing on one leg with a finger up my nose and a cotton bud in each ear offers as much hope as praying to an omnipotent entity that someone else made up.

I have no problem with people who are religious, or pray or use their faith. And in this instance, the family were members of a church, so I'm not referring to them.

However, I'm curious to know why people who aren't religious at all, decide to turn to praying when something goes bad for them, Why only pray when they need something, or life isn't going that well? Do they turn to prayer when things are going well for them? It seems like a matter of convenience,

It almost seems like people who pray only when they are in dire needs are saying" I'll pick and choose the aspects of religion that benefit me when I need it.. otherwise I won't bother".

I grew up in a churchy family (my grandfather was a Baptist minister! ) but have not gone for many many years. Since I do not pray nor do I go to church, nor do I really have much belief in any of it, I feel it would be unfair of me to all of a sudden 'turn to God' and asking for things when I've never been part of a church or prayed when life was good.

But who turns to their friends for advice when everything is going great? When you need help you ask for it, thats why people in desperate situations turn to religion.

And God would be a pretty nasty guy if he only helped people who were regular members of his club wouldnt he?! Thats the whole point of there being a God, that he helps everyone, even if you are a black sheep!! Thats the theory of religion surely?

Do I sound like a preacher ;)

And your evidence Miss Boo, if God exists that he's any less likely to be a 'pretty nasty guy' (a cross perhaps between Sun ex-editor Kelvin McKenzie and Man City headcase Joey Bartom) than a really nice guy (say, I don't know, a Nelson Mandela x Bagpuss hybrid - hey work work with me here), is what exactly?

No you don't sound like a preacher! :)

I just wonder why people turn to god, when he isn't a part of their daily lives. My friends and family are a part of my daily life, throughout all the good times as well, so of course I'm going to turn to them when it gets tough or things go bad. God is not a part of my daily life, so why would I turn to him when I'm sad?
