Losing that beer belly in time for Ibiza

In the same bout here..ibiza in september and using that as a motivation to lose the belly.. its the upper body weight too, everywhere else fine.

it will be a month on thursday since i re-joined the gym. i have made some changes i have yet to see results but i have had some bad wkends including beers takeaways etc..

i started using whey protein after a workout and most non-taining days will have them in the morning. I get down 3-4 times a week and do a mixture of cardio and weights.

I find the days i go to the gym i eat well. have 2 x wheatabix or fruit n fibre for breakie. then post workout a potein shake within 15mins after it. about anhour after the shake then have either 2 boiled eggs onbrown wholemeal bread r have a tuna salad on wholemeal pitta. then for snacking that days will eat pistachio nuts or some fruit and dinners can vary from fish, chicken, pasta, etc.

Ive cut back on soft drinks as i used to drink diet coke every day but cut that out a month ago. the problem is at weekend if hungover or having somethng rubbish like pizza or a burger then i would get fizzy orange or lucozade to go with it.

so basically i find the non-training days at the weekend the toughest. probably like alot of people drinking beer and not snacking well like crisps etc. I am planning on switching to vodka for while maybe mix it with diet 7up. i think cutting out beer for a month or so would definely help

Just did a quick scan of this thread (so apologies if what I am about to say has already been mentioned)....

Something I notice coming up time & again is the consumption of breakfast cereal. Cereal for breakfast is basically the worst way to start your day for weight loss. In fact cereal at any time is a bad idea, with the only exception being oats / porridge.

Cereal for breakfast is a very new concept and is (for weight control) a bad idea. High protein, even high fat meal is the way to go for what is probably the most important meal of the day. Anything but cereal (and gummi bears!). Try replacing cereal with eggs or similar... you will find hunger much less of an issue. Cereal for breakfast is the bad guy for many reasons... avoid!!!!

Please note -I do say 'for weight loss'. If you are running a marathon, cereal is probably not a bad option.

EDIT: Diet drinks are a bad idea too (they play tricks on your appetite). Just loose the sweet tooth, it takes a bit of willpower, but it's not impossible....

Is cereal in the morning any worse than brown bread / toast?

Doubt it ! Big plate of scrambled eggs with white toast fingers and something fishy far more sensible ?

Best solution a steady diet of redbull and fags - lost so much weight this Summer despite desperate binges on fast food I'm trying to put weight back on - without any success at all ! :(

IMO there's not much difference (bread = flour = cereal)

Theyr'e all refined carbs... brown bread is slightly better than white because of the fact it has more fibre, but not by much.

IMO the best way to eat carbs (which are essential in a healthy diet), is in moderation and of the low GI / GL variety.

The easiest way to find these 'good' carbs is to aim for stuff which grows, rather than stuff which is made by man and comes in packets. A massive generalisation, but probably the easiest way to work out for yourself what's best. IMO the key to long term fat control for most westerners is to re-train your appetite away form sugary starchy processed foods, and towards natural foods. Our grandparents probably ate better quality food than most of us today!

Predictably (and most people would say boringly), that means vegetables & beans / legumes. Fruit in moderation too. A really good way to deal with all the temptation that exists in modern life is to eat good, wholesome stuff 6 days a week, and then have one day where you don't think and just eat whatever you like ...really helps with the mental side of the discipline required.

PS. My staple breakfast meal is lean, trimmed meat (often bacon) with eggs. A small meal (dunno how many calories, but I would guess 300). I never get hungry in the morning...

lol! Stimulants and little sleep will also do it!:)

Well it does seem that many people are able to do intense endurance training without carbs when they draw on their fat stores for energy.
If you rely on carbs for the training then the body will naturally use carbs but if you get the body used to the idea of having to use it's body fat then it will use that instead.
I don't actually compete in any sport but I do physical work. When I relied heavily on carbs for energy (like most people do), I would get about 2-3 hours energy from a meal that included whole grains. I can get 5 or 6 hours energy and sometimes more from a low carb, high fat meal, no problem. So it seems to me that fat beats carbs in endurance.
BTW I don't mind what anybody chooses to eat. I just want people to know that there are various methods to achieve the same goal. They just need to find the one that suits them best.

I agree with this.

I have run marathons on a 'fairly' low carb diet (compared to most marathon runners).

The benefit of carbs is overestimated these days, and fat is vilified. An excess of either is a bad idea, but the myth of a high carb / low fat diet is the main contributor to obesity today IMO.

Indeed - go do some outdoor sports/hiking all day, have plenty of sex and dance for 5 hours or more at night for a weekend or two, with only enough food and drink to hand to keep you functioning .. you'll feel great and lose those beer bellies in no time ! (great training for Ibiza too !)

Interesting post. Over the past few weeks I have started eating loads of mixed bean and vegetable concoctions for lunch. Wind problems at first were terrible, now it seems to to have an effect in that respect! It's amazing how many variations you can throw together with some chillies / chilli powder thrown in and blasted in the microwave. This week especially I am really starting to feel more energetic and lively on my health freak diet. We have become brainwashed as a nation onto a diet choc full of additives and shyte.

Sadly any six pack I ever develop will never be visible underneath my matting of body hair:lol::lol:

Beans FTW! I find that I just don't get hungry when I eat bean / vegetable combos... Lentils are great too. My Mrs normally makes a delicious lentil dall for our Sunday evening meal and I have leftovers for most of the following weak along with various other beany / vegetable / salad combos. I have never been fat, but I did start to get a 'smooth' physique. since I learned this way of eating I have a definite 6 pack for the first time in my life at the ripe old age of 38! (I should add that I do a lot of sport and exercise btw).

I can't offer any advice on the body hair front.. sorry! :)

3 post C-C-Combo!

so rice is perhaps slightly better for you than pasta/bread? and brown rice slightly better than white?

As a great rice alternative try Quinao (pronounced keen-wa). Sainsburys sell a fab pre-cooked pouch of this, which is really nice warm or cold. It has a nice nutty taste not unlike brown rice (slightly different texture).

I'm currently on a low carb diet, no bread, no pasta, no rice, no potatoes etc.
I've got 9 weeks left until my weekend of madness on the White Isle and I'm aiming to lose two stone by the end of September.
I'm living on fruit, salad, meat, fish and protein milkshakes.
I'm not gonna tell you my weight now or when I've finished but I'll keep you up to date with how much I've lost ;)

Stay off the fruit dude, it plays havoc with your sugar levels.

I am under the impression that it doesn't. I believe that come from a flawed piece of research about the GI levels of food that didn't take into account the levels fiber and other variables. When I am cutting weight I put no limit on my vegetable and fruit intake at all.
