Katrina Thread.

I think people were just shocked that a disaster brought out the absolute worst in american society and showed america in such a bad light while compare this to how similar disasters in other countries (tsunami, iran earthquake etc) made the whole population come together and work as a community/nation to help the people effected.

That's what you saw on television, in wire service reports, and in foreign newspapers. If you read some of the US newspaper accounts (I prefer the Washington Post), you realize that it was just a small element that committed crimes. Most people pulled together and helped each other out. There's stories of people opening their homes across the country (I saw one story about one guy in a 1-room apartment ready to take in three guests!), there's shelters opened up everywhere especially in Texas, there are volunteers feeding people. $440 million has been pledged by US citizens to the Red Cross for the relief effort... in one week!

The downside was the federal government response, which was woefully slow. I think there were several causes for that, mainly related to poor planning and bureaucracy.

No, i didn't have any idea about paddy's job or patients death, sorry to hear about that, even so my point is still valid.

Having a whole thread deleted (which is what paddy said he had done) because you don't like one post is way over the top and selfish. The whole commmunity had contributed to and built up that thread which was one of the best ones on here for a long time. Blame to the mods as well if that is the case. If it is the case then i think paddy should apologise for ruining the discussion.

I actually don't think paddy is right at all (about the thread being edleted because of him complaining about the pic) and is being a bit self important, and would like to believe that the mods would not delete a whole thread just because one post offended someone (and that wasn't on purpose, and the poster had apologised).

Actually I complained to Stephen and he confirmed to me that the thread had been deleted at my request. Sounds to me like somebody else here is being a little self-important. And no, I won't apologise.

Ok,i was wrong, you did get a whole thread deleted because one post offended you. Well done! IMO that's terribly wrong and selfish. I wasn't being self important, i was holding out hope that the thoughts and feelings, and wills of the whole community were stronger and more important than the whinging of one man. I can see why stephen would delete it though knowing it would piss off lots of people on here and give him a giggle ;)
He told me that he didn't even look at it before he deleted it!
Right, first of all I'm not a whinger. I am as laid back, tolerant and as easy going as the next man but as somebody else posted, if it was a racially discriminating post everyone would be jumping up and down, but as it discriminated against disabled people...well that's ok then isn't it? And your attitude? The thread was full of vitriol and spite anyway, so why are you so het up? There was no need for the name calling etc. Who's spitting the dummy out now? I think I might smell a few double-standards here.

Is the thread being deleted REALLY that important?! I dunno why people are kicking up such a stink about it :? So it got deleted, big deal

I'm sure they'll be plenty other threads in the near future for the "community" to bitch about eachother and generally funk eachother off :?

*Rubs hands together, stands back* My work is done here, i'm off to lunch :D

I can't believe i'm reading this. It's shocking even by spotlight standards.

A grown man complaining that a thread containing one of the most horrible pictures on the www has been deleted.

N8 if you are so upset about all the hard work you put in 'building up that thread' being wasted may i suggest you direct your anger at Peppermint rather than at a man who has already told you he is grieving for a disabled person he looked after for many years.

Well I missed all this, my position stays exactly the same and everyone I've spoke to this wkend (including really 'good' ppl like my grandad who's a vicar and they agree with me), I'm so so sorry for all those poor ppl, even more so now the human stories are coming out and I hope the US Government gets its priorities right (altho it's prob a bit late for that  ) and does everything it can to help them.
