Crime-wave
Shopkeepers in the village of Sant Jordi suspect that there is an organized gang
of thieves operating in the area, as numerous reports have been recorded
over the last few months.
The band has not only been stealing money, but also jewellery and other valuable
articles, mainly from businesses situated on the San José road, Can Sifre,
Can Bellotera and Can Guerxo, although other incidents have taken place
in the Cova Santa area and nearer to Ibiza Town.
The first case occurred during the summer,
but recently more than one robbery a week has been reported.
On the 3rd of December, in the early hours of the morning a window of a country house
was broken allowing access for the thieves to make off with money, two televisions,
jewellery and clothes, all to the value of €7,000.
One of the more lucrative heists was that of Carpenteria Alba where the thieves
used power tools to gain access to the safe which contained €85,000 in cash.
On the 11th of December, again during the early hours of the morning, the premises
of Pinturas Rubio, near the Can Sifre Guardia Civil police station, were entered,
by breaking a window and several doors, to remove a safe,
which weighed almost 500 kilos.
Although the alarm was sounding from the first moment, the perpetrators managed
to make their getaway before the security guards and the police arrived on the scene.
Recently, in the BP garage in Ca n'Escandell, an unmasked man threatened the staff
with death if they did not hand over the takings, some €830.
Members of the local Residents' Association believe that there is at least one,
or possibly more, organized gangs, who use binoculars to watch the movements
of local businesses and private houses.
The Island State Administration delegate, Sofia Hernanz, has been made aware
of the situation and has ordered the police presence to be reinforced.
