Jellyfish situation?

better be safe than sorry: not 100% sure it is them until confirmed but a friend of mine has just posted a few pics she took right now on PdB beach. on the pics it looks like those f*ckers, the portuguese man-o-war.

anyone in playa d'en bossa look out closely...will udpate when I hear more.

FALSE WARNING.

the ones spotted at playa d´en bossa were NOT portuguese man-o-war. I just showed the pics to a friend of mine who really knows a thing or two about them and says they are a different kind and harmless.

Ibizan men-o-war...they just like to hang around beaches and chill ;)

okay so, with a bit more time, here's an update on jellyfish situation and to de-panic people...

- the normal pink and sometimes brown-ish jellyfish are always around the balearics (and generally around the med). the fact less turtles are around is responsible for the growing jellyfish population (turtles normally eat them). that and the rising water temperatures. the pink/brown ones sting, but aren't dangerous. normal rule applies: when getting to a beach, have a look around first. if everyone is in the water that is a good signal. if no one is in the water be suspicious. look closely, ask around (hay medusas? spanish for any jellyfish?). I always bring diving goggles to the beach anyway and with them you will always see them.

- then lately we did get a few of those nasty portuguese man-o-war. which basically aren't even jellyfish but people still put them in the same category. the portuguese man-o-war are no fun - hurts like a b*tch and can be lethal in extreme cases. but again you should see them pretty well if you look out a little.

but I only learnt yesterday that there is another type around which looks a bit similiar as the one above but is harmless.

this one is the nasty MF: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_man_o'_war

this one is the harmless guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velella

the velella (sea raft, purple sail) are smaller, don't have any tentacles and the thing on top is a triangle sail rather than the blown up bag the man-o-war has.

I'm not a specialist, but the way one stupid guy I warned before he went to the water is currently crying like a baby, I would say dangerous.

if it‘s so full of them he must have been stung by multiple yellies and is thus in a lot of pain. i don‘t think these ones are dangerous, but he was indeed stupid to ignore your warning and enter the water

When I was at cala d'hort recently there were wee ones in the water, but presumably too small to do any damage. I did have a weird itchy bit and red mark on my foot when I came out the water which I put down to being a little sting. But even those wee ones put me on edge somewhat. There were loads of folks going in and out of the sea who didn't bat an eyelid. Overly cautious on my part?

He said they are too little to hurt ?
I saw him swimming 10m,then shouting...
I think he was one of those arrogant customers of Los Enamorados...

There was certainly a lot of the darker coloured medium sized ones when we visited Formentera on Monday. There were never in more than 2s though, and even if you were snorkelling the water is so clear there you could easily avoid them.

They look like they type you seem to get there every year now. Similar to a nettle sting, feel a bit like a sharp electric shock but soon disappear. I got stung 4 or 5 times before giving up, some friends just carried on regardless, so don't seem to do to much damage.

it does hurt at first but usually after a few hours max the pain disappears with the common jellyfish we have here. I've said it plenty of times before, simply use a diving mask when swimming and you'll see them :)
