J-Lo going all eurodancy!

hahahaha hahahaa somewhere in this thread someone said Tiesto doesn't ever play a full house or trance set

Tiesto does not know what house is and certainly does not play any

I did, actually. Have you seen tiesto live in the last two - three years?
Alot of his current stuff he plays has an electro / progressive house feel to it. At Creamfields, his only trance song of the night was Adagio for strings.

The biggest thing to happen for me this year is my change in style. I play more eclectic, much more house-driven, and like, indie pop music. The whole trance part is deleted from my set now. It is completely gone. It was a revolutionary thing for me.

Tiesto said that in an interview. ;)
So, yea, house.

He's the world's biggest DJ.

hmm, I think Ron Carroll might have something to say about that

Haha. There is alot of hate for Tiesto here, I've noticed.

Vix, if you want to do a Privilege night, do his. It's the best club night they do, at the world's biggest club. :)

Is it Tiesto people don't like or is it trance (though I hear he now plays house ;))?

I just can't get my head round stuff like Ron van Rim Jobber or whatever - soulless, bludgeoning stuff. Same with hard house, happy hardcore, etc.

I don't think you can really begrudge someone who's young, embarking on clubbing for the first time, for liking this crap. it has obvious energy and superficially at least it is quite exciting. it's clearly pitched at speed freaks who like to be spoonfed instant euphoric breakdowns. we've all been there at some stage. In the early 90s I had a lot of stuff on noom, platipus etc - I know exactly the mindset at work here. As you get older, in most cases, (of course, some people are beyond hope) you just grow up and your tastebuds blossom and you gradually learn to appreciate music with depth and personality and above all with integrity. I think also by your 30s you also become a lot less tolerant of irritating noise.

Did someone say Speedcore Rave?
In the last 4 - 5 years, Trance has become so commercialized, and centered around the usual formula. Build - Breakdown - Anthem. I do get a little tired of it occasionally.

House is pretty generic though, and even more of that is released every day than Trance is.
Never really had the opportunity, in a club at least, to explore Minimal and Techno. But from what I've heard of it, it's good.

I say fair play to DJs like Tiesto, who are willing to try new things with the music they play. It's not all that often a DJ that big makes such a massive change to their setlist the way he has. I'm not a huge fan of that change (to me, he's little more than a small sized club DJ with his track selection now, as I can hear most of what he plays in Oceana on a Saturday night), but people like him, so fair play.

That reminds me, where is NakedAge?

if memory serves, he vanished into the night, when someone queried whether he might be autistic

(I believe he can still be found spouting drivel on the Roger Sanchez forum, which I went to recently for unrelated reasons)

Next thing you know he'll be sticking in some dubstep.

Ikoda - I think that would be my main problem with DJs like Tiesto. My assumption would be that they play stuff you'd hear in any towny club or, at best, a set that sounds like one of these Godskitchen compilations I get sent for free. When I make the effort to go further afield, I want to hear something I can't get in Madison's or Club De Mar (my local dives, mostly avoided these days).

Like minimal you mean?

Wasn't Platypus stuff rather good in its day though?

I'd have been horrified in my school days if I jumped out of my parents window, pitched up at a crusty rave to hear stuff like they play in the 'world's biggest club'.

(love being old )

it's really hard to evaluate the merits of a track like for instance Union Jack Two Full Moons and a Trout http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWoZqoxdN5U in 2011, it's out of context, it sounds 'dated' it's inconsistent with "where I'm at" but it also invokes incredible nostalgia for a time when time passed very slowly and absolutely nothing in the world mattered.

Sometimes it's nice to hear stuff you know however. With Super8 & Tab, or Lange, I have a rough Idea of what I'm getting (i.e. some of their tunes, and alot of tunes from the label they are on). I'm not always so keen on going to a night where I don't know any music at all...
...Saying that, I went to see Marco V at Turnmills four years ago, no idea who he is or what he played, other than 'dance music.' Tis how I got into this entire 'scene'... But Trance thankfully, isn't played too often in Clubs here, else I'd just get bored of it.
Tends to just be Indie or RnB / Guetta & Bass. Makes you appreciate the decent music more, if nothing else ;)

Also, how do you get CDs sent to you for free? ;)

It's good to drop in the occasional recognisable tune, a sample or a remix. That works (as contrast). But a set full of recognisable stuff and you might as well be listening to a club compilation or the radio. Perhaps that's why some people like Tiesto, though. Maybe they mostly populate towny clubs and Tiesto's not a big jump from what they hear every night, just different enough for them to say they've done some proper clubbing on holiday?

I get free CDs because I write for a music website.

Off the Rails, a few weeks ago, was like that. I knew very little of the tunes, but the ones that were played, packed a punch. :D. I guess though, with DJs as big as that, you expect them to play what you hear on their radio show, for example.
You go to a live music gig (e.g. Green Day) and expect to hear them play mostly Green Day song. Guess that rolls over to that kind of level for DJs too.

And that makes sense. What do you work for, out of curiosity?
