IS IT OVER???

Yup

Space was a bag of shite this year. Steve cup of tea with my nan Lawler was bollox. No-one was given a standing ovation - groove armada although played some of their best songs were boring and predictable and I wanted to leave early as I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bored of the music. All for 50 effin euros. The staff were unfriendly apart from the dealers, who dealt rubbish, the drinks were extortionate, the bouncers nicked someone's wallet at one point, and it all left a sour taste in my mouth. In the 6 years of going to Space this has never happened to me before and I thought that indeed that I was going old and maybe was time to give up going clubbing and start my dinner party routine. I even left before my idol of DJing from old time Sasha was playing, as i was so distraught. The evil promoters make roughly (on a 3000 capacity) £150,000 euros a sunday - possibly about £100k taking guestlist into consideration ect. They are fleecing ba*tards that need to take themselves to a secluded beach and take a good hard look at themselves and then swim out to sea so they may never to be seen again.

I was probably at my lowest ebb on monday when my faith in Ibizan clubbing was restored at DC10. Mr C was slightly harder than my usual choice of music but was immense, Jo Mills was tremendous - she kept us all dancing as she fleeted between the decks having a whale of a time.

Great vibe and amazing atmoshphere, and fantastically friendly and happy staff, all for only £30 euros!!.

I am concerened however on the trend of much harder music this year than previous years generally heard in ibizan clubs this year.

I want big riffs, old skool beats and great vocals without thumpin banging chugging going no where fast boring unsexy tripe that is being churned out at the moment. Give us some sexy funk back into clubbing!!

DID ANYONE REALLY HAVE A BIG TUNE IN IBIZA, WHERE WERE SOME OF THE OLD SKOOL CLASSICS? Maybe I am finally resigned to the old man whinging about the old times stage of my life already but I still feel there's life in this clubbing 30 something yet... Just need to find the right place for it, and at the moment its not ibiza sadly.

Any comments greatfully received!!!

La troya still rocked tho'. Probably one of THE best nights

Thank you for saying that!
No, you're not getting old...you're talking complete sense. A few years ago it would've been impossible for anyone to say anything of the sort about Space. The place was heaven on earth...I never even knew it was possible to reach those heights on a day out. *wow*
Now, the music is a bit moodier, the sound systems have been turned down and there's a daytime atmosphere of people 'waiting for everything to get going'.
I'm not saying the island doesn't rock cos we all know Ibiza is never the same from one year to the next...
((How much do we love Jo Mills for example?? Bless her cottons!...The woman is hilarious!))

And I love La Troya too!...It seems we have similar tastes :-)).

Bottom line??? Get rid of the Mafia and dinosaur ego driven djs and bring back the '99 fluffiness!!

1. Space gets roof Who cares........does that change the fact that music is played and people dance?
2. Sound levels in Space turned down during the day It sounded fine to me on the terrace, still louder than most other clubs anywhere in the world
3. Club atmospheres on a decline since 2002 Depends on the nights you choose. All the nights i went to were better than last year
4. People saying Space is over rated (something it would've been impossible to say in 1999/2000) I said that on here last year after my first time......people have different expectations and different tastes
5. Bora Bora closing A great disappointment, but for me, only one part of the whole reason i go to Ibiza
6. Sa Trinxa - no music after sun down i don't care.....went to Salinas only once this year........
7. No more DC-10 Although i didn't go this year, a genuine shame it's closed down
8. Kumharas/KM5 etc also affected
9. Gee going to Brazil there is always new talent around the corner and so many other better DJ's on the island
10. Manumission looking for NYC residency Never been to manumission and have never had an interest in going
11. Police just about EVERYWHERE I don't see why that is such a negative.....i didn't see police hassling people of being conspicuous by their presence
12. Reports of the island being somewhat quieter Again, i thought it was busier than at the same time last year
13. Clubs hiking up prices when the Euro came in Drink prices are ridiculous, however, there more good value club nights this year than last year.......armada, carl cox, meganite, la communidad, etc, you just need to look past the big names and find better music and value at the other nights
14. Sudden law in 2002 that music couldn't be played after 6am or something No comment as i don't know anything about that
15. Rumours that the government are trying to turn Ibiza into St Tropez

(yeah right)

CAN I HAVE EVERYONE'S THOUGHTS PLEASE?

They are my thoughts. I have only been to Ibiza twice, so i don't have the benefit of hindsight to compare it to the 'glory' days of the late 90's like some of you. All i know, is that it's a unique place and i've had the time of my life each time i've been. While i'm disappointed about bora bora and DC-10, they are just a very small part of the whole experience for me. This year i went to Bora Bora 3 times and didn't go to DC-10 and went to Sa Trinxa once for an hour..........i spent 11 days on the island this year, therefore those three places made up about 2% of my trip this year.

A fair point...but you can't ignore what I'm trying to say. For example,

I said:

...and your response...

Agreed!...and thank God for that eh? If the scene didn't grow and evolve then it would've died out years ago. Isn't it great the way that new promotors come in year after year and bring something new and unique? NastyDirtySexMusic for example!
But oops! There goes another one!
They too were busted by the authorities.

http://www.ibiza-voice.com/news/news.php?id=434

See review via the above link and I quote:

"Well the biggest news in case you haven’t heard is we got totally busted. At the time we were pretty philosophical about it but since the closure of Bora Bora and just about every cool place on the island it’s clear we were just the first in a much wider agenda. I am totally amazed at all this. I mean...this shit is the most self-destructive kind of activity. Don’t the PP, the Consell or whoever and the discos realise they are commiting suicide?"

El Divino, fine! Es Vive, great!...Agreed, very good, but are they enough to keep people coming back year after year? (maybe, I know I will :P)...But will there ever be anything new on the island again?

In a way, I'd like all the discerning people to boycott the island. Fill the clubs full of cattle market mingers is what I say. Then they'll be sorry. Selfish f**kwits.

Grrr.

Happy Friday by the way!

I hear what you're saying, but for me, it's a little different. I'm coming all the way from Australia to experience the big clubbing experience........not some small private party that a bunch of friends have put on like nastydirtysexmusic or a tiny beach bar like sa trinxa.........i can do that here in Sydney and save considerable money and a very long flight.

What i can't do in Sydney, is go to a club like Amnesia or Space or privilege or pacha and experience 5,000 people going bezerk to great DJ's with awesome sound and atmosphere night after night. Sure they cost money, but when you spend $2,500 just on a plane ticket to get to Ibiza like i did, paying 40 euro's for a club night is pretty insignificant.

I appreciate that the small parties and bars are all part of the experience, but for me, it's a very small part of it and not the main reason i come to Ibiza.

Maybe not but you can do this:

Azure 2004 (Sydney's harbour party) - did you go? It was wicked eh? Partying while the sun went down over the opera house was an incredible experience.

I really liked Sydney...during the holiday season it's a great place to visit.

Sorry, I'm going off the plot a bit aren't I?

ive not read all this so sorry if im repeating myself but!! to think ibiza is over is the most irritating thing i can hear,

1. Space gets roof
Big deal it looks like it has a roof anyway

2. Sound levels in Space turned down during the day
So that means its only at an ear shattering volume now how will we cope with that??

3. Club atmospheres on a decline since 2002
Biggest load of bollocks ive read so far and ive been 5 times since 1999

4. People saying Space is over rated (something it would've been impossible to say in 1999/2000)
Saying space is overated is an opinion that can be said at any time

5. Bora Bora closing
Not good but its not the end of the island

6. Sa Trinxa - no music after sun down
Ive never been so cant comment

7. No more DC-10
Again it was one morning a week its hardly the downfall of ibiza get a grip

8. Kumharas/KM5 etc also affected
How??

9. Gee going to Brazil
he might as well carry it on somewere good luck to him

10. Manumission looking for NYC residency
Cant see how this will effect ibiza, if anything maybee it will open up ibiza to more americans

11. Police just about EVERYWHERE
Police have allways been everywere, and on nights out ive not seen police at all

12. Reports of the island being somewhat quieter
YEs all the beer boys have gone to kavos so why you listing this as a bad thing??

13. Clubs hiking up prices when the Euro came in
Its not just the clubs the whole of europe hiked up the prices

14. Sudden law in 2002 that music couldn't be played after 6am or something
You dont even know what your talking about here do you??

15. Rumours that the government are trying to turn Ibiza into St Tropez
Ive heard St Tropez is a nice place??!!!!

Im still in ibiza now and have been for nearly 2 weeks, i think people who think ibiza is over dont deserve to be here cause there just sheep following a crowd, i still think ibiza is amazing and am already looking into getting a villa next year, the people who are here at the moment are the best crowd ive seen on th island for a while,

Places being shut down is shitty but its what you make it, DC10 was created by clubbers who go to unknown places and and have it big time it wasnt a world famouxs club to start and it wasnt started buy people living in the past of other clubs that have been, Ok DC10 was good but there will be other places on the iasland to find and give that vibe to.

What im saying is be a leader not a follower

And if you think ibiza is over then get a life!

its not over.....it will never be over.....i think its cause of the music.....lets play again led zepellin-kashmir....then nobody will bother, even the guardia civil guys,...he,he...it will be like in old times, when i saw policemen full drunken with gin tonicas...ha, haaaaa 8)

and you're absolutely right.
BUT...

NOT TRUE! Because the major clubs will always stop this from happening!

OK - we all love Space etc - and maybe they're 'just enough' on their own...but aren't you supporting the clubbing equivalent of McDonalds?

They're capitalist b*stards!...Don't get me wrong, this isn't new news.

However, harging a fortune for a bottle of water is one thing...but closing down rival clubs that are breathing new life into our music scene is quite another.

They're killing Ibiza, admit it!

I'd like to say boycott them but I think we're all united in saying it's slightly difficult.

FALSE The big clubs can close down and squash clubs when they get big but the vibe they cant kill, dc10 became popular because it wasnt run of the mill it was out of the way and not many people new about it, its only last few of years its became so popular (i think),

Im 100% certain that the type of people who made DC10 what it was will find somewere else to create the vibe, ok it mihgt not last long till its closed but there will allways be somewere on the island just like DC10, weather everyone knows about it is a different story

ONE MORE TIME on a new posters for Circo Loco was written that terrace wil be open with Dj`s again lets wait for the news what happens tomorrow!

Oooh I'm loving this debate!

"I think" being exactly the point!
....I'd be interested to find out if you ever went to DC-10.
I remember when it used to be free, the toilets were scuzzy and it wasn't really known about but in the last few years, colourful flyers advertise the weekly lineups, mixmag write monthly reviews and annual cd compilations are released through high street outlets like HMV etc...and if I remember rightly, DC-10 was featured in a segment of the Ibiza coverage on the Big Breakfast complete with a Jo Mills interview.
They've even taken their established brand around the world as far as Australia!

...This is hardly underground is it?

So, if we track the DC-10 success story, we find a club which was created by clubbers for clubbers. It rose from the heart of the underground...just like a certain club you may have heard of called Space! (The terrace was a cellar where a dj used to spin records for the locals).

The atmosphere is always great in Ibiza (something we both agree on)...but this is all thanks to the Paradise Garage in New York, Amnesia in the early days and London clubs like Shoom.
I've got so used to corporate brands capitalising on house music and thankfully this doesn't seem to have dented the scene too much *phew*.

...However, if you kill the underground there will be no overground.

Without cutting edge clubs like DC-10, NastyDirty etc...what's to stop all the major clubs becoming like Eden?
After all, that's where club 18-30s people get told to go!
Any Thompsons holiday rep will reccomend mainstream places so what's to say that it won't be overrun with package holidaymakers more into t!ts, sunshine & "ENG-ER-LAND" than music?

The big clubs are all fantastic! But the atmospheres can only be sustained with a thriving underground scene which for the first time in ten years will not exist in Ibiza.

Orwell's 'Animal farm' springs to mind.

...and another thing! *continues rant*
Why all the apathy?

Does this mean that people agree with the guerilla tactics these clubs are using?

VOTE WITH YOUR FEET!

Its sad that it seems to be human nature that whenever people find a good thing people try and knock it down and p*ss on the parade.
Ibiza is the most special, incredible, magical vibe that I, and i am guessing everyone else here has ever experienced- otherwise we wouldnt be here posting on an Ibiza forum!
I have come back 2 days ago from my most amazing trip yet, the atmosphere was incredible. Sure, i was gutted i didnt catch Bora Bora in full swing- but i didnt sit around crying about it, we just enjoyed what we had! If people stopped predicting Ibizas downfall and speculating 'when it was going to end' and actually loved the island and saw and felt what it meant im sure they would enjoy it so much more.
I for one will be back next year and am still coming down and feeling the butterflies when i hear 'strings of life' fluttering through the air.
People have been saying 'Ibiza is not the same' for years and years, and still it gets bigger and better. Frankly IMO the doubters are getting boring.

FunkyHouseKitten said:

Sorry for being boring

...But I'll be the first to spout on about how wonderful Ibiza is!

If I didn't love the place, I wouldn't have started this debate.

This is a highly political situation that smacks of '94's criminal justice bill. Apathy is our biggest enemy here so what I'm trying to say is, enjoy the island as much as you can but exercise your right to get angry at the lack of respect these nasty b*stards have for your beloved scene.

"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke

At least write a letter or speak out in some way about what these people are doing...and then by all means enjoy the island! :D

No i never did go to DC10, and that is probably why i totally disagree that ibiza is over cause it might be shutting down.

I dont agree with the way the big clubs can controll the island at all but i do believe other places will appear cause of the downfall of others.
