Ibiza - What has happened?

Hi, I'm a newbie - go easy!

I have just got back from Ibiza and this is the first time I have been since 1992 (I also went in '89 & 90) and maybe its cos i'm older etc but frankly I think Ibiza has disappeard up its own ar*e.

What a bunch of pretentious wanna-be's everywhere you look.

Seal's clapping at sunset (and oh so many of them!?)

San An - was just as I expected, only bigger. What happened to the good old Star Club? :D

Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King populated by football top wearing English twats! Shocking!

Ibiza old Town was a lot better but still - there was just soooo many pretentious see/and be seen type people kicking around.

I was well disappointed with the clubs too. Again, maybe because I can remember the fantastic parties back in the day (music that is now classed as old skool) but the prices to get in and the prices for drinks were just plain stupid!? Corporate shite everywhere you look. Just a complete sell out basically.

A mate of mine summed it up very well when one night we were sitting in a bar - looking round he said...'Of course you know where we are don't you?' Er, yes mate we do! 'Ibiza having a beer in Dome' - (we thought he had smoked one too many) - 'Nah, we are in a audtion for Popstars - The Rivals' True enough, when we looked round at Mullet central we knew where he was coming from! :)

El Divino was a great addition to the super clubs though I must admit - lovely setting.

Barcelona on the other hand was fantastic, clubs were belting... Danceatoria (sp?) - free to get in! and what a beautiful club and La Terrezza - superb and just everyone up for a great time.

I don't want to pish people off with my first post (and I guess I might do) but I just have to say -

Ibiza - had its heart wripped out and has sold it soul to the corporate dollar.

Peace. 8)

It's not just Ibiza mate. It's the whole scene.

The house scene used to be about the music and now its the same old things wrapped up in not even very different packages.

It's all very stale.

Everyone will agree with you on the price but as has been said before when you used to go i expect it wasnt full of beer boys all summer and you didnt have things like ibiza uncovered attracting even more,
so the clubs are priced out of there range as they wouldnt go and get pissed there.

Also with time everything changes, you change ibiza changes, I truley believe that ibiza may have been better back then but for people who are not old enough to know that ibiza has still got the "ibiza feeling" and is still a place everyone loves the way it is now.

One thing that is probably still the same (i hope) is that the people are still there for the clubs and the music,

Everyone's entitled to their say, so welcome to the board Benson :D

I agree with some of the things you say, I've only been going since 1996 so probably don't notice some of the changes as much cos I've been back every year.

Yay things have changed but a lot of things have evolved for the better.

What did you think of things like DC10, Bora Bora, Space this year??

Some aspects of Ibiza have got worse (like you say the sunset strip is terrible these days imo) but surely that's an opportunity to find new places to watch the sunset.

Sorry that your holiday wasn't all you expected, I spose you had such high expectations compared to your last visit, but welcome aboard anyway ;)

san ann has some terrible places ill agree, normally only go for the sunset places..

Never found problems in space or dc10. Pacha on a friday was full of some "look at me" people but on Rodger Sanchez everyone was there for the music..

I guess different things floats different peoples boats

benson - try to go to ibiza in the low season...march april, or sept october.----much better...i will go this year at new years eve,...ive heard from an old hippie, thats its fantastic,...like in old days! ;)

Thanks for the welcome etc. :)

Don't get me wrong - I still had a brilliant holiday, its just I thought Ibiza would be the highlight and in fact it wasn't - Barcelona and Begur/Calella were!

I went to barcelona for 3 days then down to Valencia for 3 days (very hot) flew across to Ibiza for a week and then back to Barcelona where we then went up the coast to a place called Begur (Absolutely beautiful - and really relaxing, just what you need after a week in Ibiza!)

I 'spose it was because I was so excited to be back and it brought back loads of memory's and revisiting places you hadn't been too for 12 years! which was all good but it just wasn't how I remember it! (which I knew it wouldn't be...but still)

Pacha was good - but then so it should be for spending the best part of 200 Euros! Space was still rocking on the terrace some of the time but not all....

DC10 we didn't make - we did drive past it though on the way to Salinas where we got very pished at The Jocky Club on Torres!

Its just when you see 'Sponsored by Redbull' signs and the big clubs just hurding as many punters through the door as they can at 40-50 euros a pop you know its over!

San An has even got its own beach!? where did that come from? Good thing though as it keeps them all in the one place kind of thing! Nightlife has gone too  (I think thats what it was called)

'Tis a shame but I don't reckon i'm ever going to go back....

I suppose a lot of the old skool from back in the late 80's and early 90's will have noticed huge changes, from the music, the people who go, the clubs and of course the drugs.
It has definitely turned into a corporate money making scheme (as most successful things in life seem to do !) but there are still some great parties about and some fantastic music being made, it's just harder to find amongst all the crap and try-hards !

You know, I remember when I was a little new wave/punk kid growing up and we'd always moan and groan when some band we liked got popular. "They've sold out! Too commercial! Evil! Evil! I liked them 5 albums ago when they were obscure and no one else owned their records."

Nowadays, maybe because I work a corporate job and live a routine corporate-financed life, I look at it all a little differently. Sure, none of us like it when things that we like change, but (and not to be too cliche) that's life.

Moreover, anything that people connect with and which becomes popular is bound to attract people who want to make money off it. We love the music. We love the parties where they play good music. The promoters, labels and nightclubs have realized there's a lot of us, so they can make some money. The corporations have realized a lot of us are gathering in one place, so they can do some marketing.

I am a relative newcomer - I've only been going to Ibiza for the past 4 years. Already, I've noticed that things are actually getting a little less crowded and less commercial than in previous years, and I'm certainly not opposed to that (even if that means more family vacationers, pensioners, and kids around). The place will change and evolve and find an equilibrium that can be sustained.

Perhaps the reason you didn't enjoy Ibiza this trip is because your expecations were based on what the place was. Better to accept what it is now, and find the best parts of it.

I still think the island is heaven on earth and I hope I'll have a villa there to retreat to someday. I'm sure, by the time I do, it will be a different place, but that's o.k. because I'm sure it will still be great.

I'm sure ibiza back in the 80's and 90's was great, it was a kept secret.
But things change....As we get older our attitudes and experiences are different...

I'm sure the younger crowd...when they return to Ibiza in 10 - 15 years will say the things.. Don't you think?

and I agree things have changed...

p.s. Why is everyone so down on the Sunset Strip? Go with your friends, enjoy a few drinks (don't eat there, of course), watch the beautiful sunset, and go home and get ready to go out for the evening (or go straight to a pre-party location elsewhere).

I'm not sure what people are expecting there, but if you're there to do just those things, there's nothing wrong with the place. And while I don't clap, who cares if someone else wants to? The night has begun, and that's something to celebrate (along with the beauty of the moment).

i would agree with you, if i wouldnt know the strip 20 years ago - today NIGHTMARE!! - i will not go there during high season again - until they change it......if they will ever change it ...dont think so...so my dear cafe del mar: BYE, BYE!!

Can I just say ... this year was the first time I've managed a whole day through to night at and around Bora Bora .... At 5 pm, that place is heaving ... people on the tables, arms in the air, singing along - wearing little, and certainly not dressed up; everyone there JUST for the music and the whole happy vibe of the place !! Bora Bora did more for me than most clubs ! Loved it !

I've enjoyed Ibiza every year I've been (the last four), but I would have loved to have seen how it was in the 80's, or even earlier, in the 60's! Obviously we wouldn't have had the clubs we do now, but just to experience the "hippy" vibe... and plus the island would be a lot less commercialised... it would be cool

My first trip was '87 but it's all just a distant memory now so couldn't really compare.

We enjoy Ibiza more and more each year simply because you meet new people and generally learn more about the place.

However, i thought the clubs had a far better atmosphere back around 98/99.

i'd like to say that i haven't been to a single place any of you mentioned on this thread and i think ibiza is just fine.

there's so much more to it that hasn't changed at all in many years.

the problem about being party capital of the universe is that all you party animal change your tune about what's hot and what's not every five minutes.

however the great thing about our little island is that all that grafted on 'ibizaness' can be avoided so easily. i do it every day

(i would like to go to begur though)
