My first trip to Ibiza dates back to the year 2000. So I’m relatively new and cannot compare the island today to the island of the early 1990’s. Yet I can feel that the island as of last year has witnessed accelerated improvements. When you reach eivissa airport you will first notice that there are no clubs ads contrary to previous years. This may be an indicator that the isle is trying to diversify its points of attractions and I believe that this strategy is well communicated between the officials and the club owners. As the image of Ibiza as the “world dance capital” which subliminally means: land to pull, take drugs and go to very commercial clubs playing trance & house anthems is fading away, the island is recovering and at fast pace.
On this year’s short trip, I noticed that the island is on the right track:
-The number of visitors has slightly declined, but I’m sure that the spending per capita has increased. Wish we had some statistics. BUT despite that,
-The clubs are full with people coming to dance till they drop
-New bars and clubs opening in the town and all seeking a “posh” identity.
-San Antonio is less busy but still fulfills its main duty: retain the beer boys.
Another personal opinion: Ibiza is benefiting from the fact that Dance music is not anymore the cash cow of the music industry. Hence, more “True” lovers of this music are coming from all over the world to spend a week dancing next to similar people and checking the latest in house.
Yet, when in Ibiza, you have to expect seeing all kinds of people. I remember that dancing next to the beer boys used to drive me crazy, but not anymore. Because I expect to see some of them and I’m mentally prepared to enjoy my music.
Moreover, let’s not forget that times change. For instance, Café Del Mar and the sunset strip aren’t the same and it’s better to avoid them and seek other places to see the sunset, if you feel that you have to do that while in Ibiza.
To conclude I think that we’re living in a corporate world, but Ibiza’s “corporations” are still the best in delivering this hedonistic feeling.
Sorry for the long message but I couldn’t stop.
