"The wider techno community" think anybody who's popular with the masses is atrocious, though. That's their thing  ... and they might be right for all I care tbh. But, regardless of how good he actually is, he's definitely not as good as he used to be.

Stopped being good when he started smiling for me

Not sure about that... people like Cox and Beyer are pretty mainstream but still revered in most proper “techno community” circles. Hawtin and Carola are both just a bit sh1t IMO

you're kinda right but I think a few guys still manage to walk the tricky respectability/popularity tightrope eg Mills, Octave One, Derrick May, KINK, Garnier (on his day...)

as an annoying snob myself, I haven't yet worked out if I lose interest in DJs more because they become popular or because they dilute to become popular - but at the same time it warms my heart to hear people like Kerri Chandler who came from humble beginnings with a fair amount of tragedy finally achieve success in later life

You probably only think that because you like Coxy and Beyer. Loads of musos despise them - some active members on this board included.

No Sven Väth? I struggle to see how anyone can say that he hasn't stayed true to his roots and has in any way lost the respectability that he originally had.

away from this forum, I never really hear anyone ever mention him tbh but then again maybe that's just the people I know?

I think that the great techno-trance divorce of the early 90s still drives some prejudice all these years later, but I think the resentment is now mainly aimed at the festivals as well for killing the clubs (even though Dekmantel consistently champion the best in the business). Techno heads were always the most militant of all because underground techno itself was a 'cold climate' reaction against 'warm climate' glossy fluffy bra house and managed to stay below the radar for years because the likes of Dave Clarke and UR were totally uncompromising (in Clarke's case pissing a lot of people off along the way). There's loads of literature on this for the seriously curious - check out Kirk DeGiorgio (a fine techno dj/producer) who is a scholar on the subject or watch the 'High Tech Soul' documentary. I've been on those forums and got badly burnt for asking the wrong questions (usually by some speccy bald guy hiding behind an avatar) but I'm glad that scene exists because to me there is still no music more exciting to me than emotional deep techno/house on the right system.

Went to underground for the first time last night, brilliant venue, couldn’t recommend enough! Will be back Thursday for Rhadoo!

Afterlife 11-3/4 then on to Underground is the plan now :D

how busy was it last night? tini and the gang normally draws a crowd

I've noticed that Carola has found a winning formula with the sheeplike camera phone generation - play monotonous tech house for the majority of the night and then pick a few incredibly obvious and lazy old classics to finish in the small amount of morning sunlight to guarantee people video and post.

I've seen videos of him playing "King of My Castle", "4U (MK remix) and now "Seven Nation Army" - which begs the question, what on earth has happened to the old Marco Carola!? It seems like since he has completely changed his record collection along with his new face. Disgraceful from someone I genuinely used to enjoy.

This is nothing new though. He’s been doing this for years. I don’t really mind the throwback tracks at the end of his set tbh...just a fun thing he does. The problem is everything before imo. Not too interesting to me.

im fine with dj playing pop rock dance (1-2 rythm, beats n beats are boring ) songs at end of sets as long it not commercial track such 7 nation army, smells like teen spirit, madonna la isla bonita, all heavy rotated tracks :D
Heard at sonar a few weeks ago a track i was keen when a teen (get back the dance 80's o_O)
