Ibiza 2003 onwards...So what now?

Its hard to say how busy it is this season until we get to the end of the season.
I was there in mid june and many places were busy and many places were dead.
But this year there was a bout a billion and one different opening parties on every night.
Bora Bora was rammed every day early season and a lot of clubs were extremely busy as well, there were also many clubs that were quiet but these were the smaller less known places.
As far as tourism in general is concerned i'm not sure how quiet that is this year.
I don't think clubbing is going to suffer to much in general, Maybe next year they might realise that its not a good idea to oversaturate the market although this will mean the smaller promotors will either lose out because of the bigger nights or the smaller promotors will do things better for cheaper without being greedy ( maybe impossible for a promotor )
then they might be able to compete.
Also at some point the whole island should become a bit cheaper if it wants to keep the numbers up.
As far as hip hop goes i don't know of many people that go to ibiza to hear hip hop. I would also say that hip hop and uk garage hasn't done much for ayia napa recently.
The music causes too many problems, in manchester there is always a hip hop night opening and after 2 or 3 weeks it will be closed down as there will be some sort of trouble.
Hip Hop nights would probably do well in places where there is lots of middle class white kids who like pretending to be gangsters ( Ali G types )
There will be probably less trouble in them type of areas as there will be no real gangsters to start the serious trouble.

moudrie, its got nothing to do with conquering, in fact that s where the problem in music usually lies. As soon as you start pinning down music to one style its loses its edge. Hence the reason why much of dance musci has become so boring.

Electro has changed dance music for the better because house music has taken the 80s electronica\new romantic sound and converted it today.

When disco lost steam house and garage emerged combined the soul and funk previously with a harder more electronic sound.

Hip hop isnt just what you hear on mtv and to say that its nothing to do with openness, expression and more to do with violence is liek saying all house music sounds like gabba.

In fact hip hop emerged from djs cutting up old rare groove 45s, and was seen at the time as a heinous crime (whilst "funky" house was also doing the same thing doing the same albeit with a faster heavier bassline).

From this turntablism emerged, where the skill was in cutting up records to create something ENTIRELY new rather than just playing tune after tune as seen in house music.

What im saying is why cant djs take a leaf out of hip hop books in regards to style of djing. In fact it is more possible with electro, as its more likely to use off beats than the usual 4\4 sound of house.

Art isnt about conquering its about reinventing, and breaking down stereotypes and genres. Dont knock any type of music, it can all educate you.

What i think the problem with Ibiza is, is that it has just got too big and popular ( clubbing) in a short space of time, for such a small island. The people who own the club's are only in it for the money, with-out giving anything back to the island. Ok! granted tourist's revenue help's a bit as i can remember the time when all road's led along a dirt track. I think/hope that eventually Ibiza will return too what it was before and that is just a small sleepy island. Es-Cana in the late 70s early 80s was as popular as all the other resort's inc: San Antonio etc.... but the council put a ban on loud music and young tourist's drinking outside of the bar's (grannies, spud's pub, the red lion just too mention a few) Also there was a club called Charly's which used too get packed out everynight and also another club called Pink's which also was very popular, but time's have changed along with the music and so has es-cana as now it's very quiet their. But atleast something's never change and that is my favourate watering-hole called bar 3 equinox . Oh! you can give me Ibiza to a day out at Blackpool anytime.

only when the island is able to offer this kind of variety do we have a chance of adapting enough for the future.

one of the coolest moves i ever saw by a club was renaissance at privilege in 2000 with their live acts. leftfield, moby, kylie, groove armada, moloko - classy!!

Totally agree! I thought what they did to Privilege was incredible! They filled the place with Renaissance artwork, so much so that they made the biggest club in the world feel intimate!
The night had structure too, they thought carefully about theming the dancers and opened up the front of the club so everyone rushed forward when the live acts came on. It really worked well and added a different flavour to my holiday in 2000 (I was there for the Moloko date). I've not seen anything as daring since. I suppose it's a combination of the busiest season (a lucky time for the island) and a cash injection from the mean fiddler group.
I doubt anything on this scale will be repeated for a while.

I reckon hearing Hip Hop wouldn't be too bad. I like all types of music. With orig liking trance and Hard House and now the dare i use the word 'funky' house (you know what i mean). My CD/Record collection ranges from Simon and Garfunkle to Lisa Lashes etc. Although my fav is hous emusic, i enjoy all types (and i'm only 23).

I was at a house party the other week and my mate was playin some quality US house stuff and then he started playin some James Brown in the middle...absolute class, everyone loved it!

Like said before we shouldn't pigeon hole music. I like all types. Thats why the back rooms at clubs are usually excellent as they place, house, elctro etc. hip hop mixed with other stuff and its absolute quality!

For me ibiza would be better if it lost some of its 'commercialism' i would have loved to have been there in the early days when the likes of Rampling etc first went over and when Alex and Brandon put some decks behind the bar at space and created the terrace. Imagine if those people hadn't been.....then would we have the place that we all know and love!?!?!

I love it there, you all love it there, or we wouldn't be on thi site. I will keep going back even if it goes back to being a set of decks behind a bar as teh place is just special, sunsets, beutiful landscapes etc. People will still go!

Real Ibiza is about Tolerance

Do what you like
Think what you like
Be whatever you like to be

Colour/race/religion/politics doesn`t matter

Music is not the key. House isn`t the sollution. There has been an era of hippies. And an era of pirots as well.

What is happening is just that many things are there at the same time. House is just one of them. Those dreams about love, peace and happiness are just so close to be true in Ibiza. Music in Ibiza can be anything but if it doesn`t have same philosophy as House has it doesn`t manage in Ibiza.

If house music will die - Ibiza will survive
If popularity will go - Ibiza will survive
BUT
Without tolerance the REAL IBIZA will die!

Ibiza 2003 and beyond...

Personally I'm happy that some of the clubs in Ibiza seem to be struggling to fill their dancefloors this year, as year on year the atmosphere in some of the big clubs seems to be getting worse (the terrace at space being a notable exception), Manumission has now turned into a parody, basically being a club 18-30 excursion with a few clubbers thrown in, Eden having the threatening atmosphere of a Magaluf discoteque, and most of the rest of the clubs playing the lowest common denominator house music whilst charging the highest prices possible. For the good of the music scene over there, things need to be shaken up, and for that to happen some of the big names need to close, some of the fat cat DJs need to find somewhere else to chow down, and new talent needs to rise up from the underground, as would seem to be happening in the uk at the moment.

So lets all look at this as an opportunity for new beginnings, to get back to the original balaeric vibe of a small friendly crowd, great music and unexpected happenings, rather than predictability. :D

I wrote about this a month back and people said I was negative but I was stating wot alot of people thought. That Ibiza magic didnt seem to be there this year.....That certain something that previous years had....Maybe I was wrong in building it up to be a better experience than the years before but all I could think at some stages out there was"shit,I cant believe I am in ibiza....cmon people lets have it....alot of people were talking about the "good ol' days" and how much its changing.

I do agree with Barbie about the choice being that much more coz I remember taking a rough guide with me on paper on wot nights to do but this year there was soo much choice but also alot of greed.

I sincerely hope that UK gargare and hip hop dont take over. I used to love Hip Hop as a kid in the 80's and garage aswell but now its all about minging shit heads who think they are sooooo cool......yeah right!!!!!!...fxxk off mate...So if ibiza being not "quite" there this year means all the beer boys and slappers will eff off and it recovers as a chilled out fun loving island once again where the only thing that matters is the music then I'm all for that.

For the love

IBIZA, IBIZA. I got back from the island about 4 weeks ago. I went for some of the opening parties. MAW at Ministrys opening was the highlight of my whole 10 day trip. We love Sundays I hated.
The problem like someone said before is that ibiza is way too comercial.
What happens is that GOOD music lovers get turned off by this and refuse to pay the high prices to hear cheesey music. A lot of people visit Ibiza because it's known to be the PARTY ISLAND ( again, cheesey propaganda )
People are finding other destinations where they don't have to pay much and where they can enjoy a good show. Now, off course Ibiza is consistent and it offers something different every night, and no other place can do that YET. NOT YET.
Who knows what's going to happen in the future. One thing I know I'm more in love with the music now then I was 10 years ago.
We need to go back to our roots and do it for the love of music, not money.

P.S Jade Jagger is on crack. Hip Hop culture does not belong in a place like Ibiza. Trust me. She lives in Ibiza, she just doesn't know...

To be honest, when I go clubbing in this country or abroad I go because I want to go clubbing, I want to listen to the music, I want to see the dj's performing I want to see lots of like minded people smiling and having fun!. I don't give a f*@k what any one else is saying about how busy it is, I'm going cause I want to! I do partly agree that there maybe arn't "as many" people but it's already been said that there are more places to go than ever. If people are always going to say negative thoughts about Ibiza, then more and more people will go along with the majority, if they like clubbing or not.

Well I went last year and am goin in a week, and I thought it was cool!. We went at the end of June last year when things were just opening up but the place was packed, the clubs were full and everyone was chilled. Apart from the fact that I had my bag stolen by some scabby local. Can't wait to go this year as it should be even better. Have been to Magaluf (Hmm), Faliraki - which was just like England on a boozy Saturday night, Gran Canaria, Corfu and Crete. But I have to say and I will always say that it was one of the best holidays I have ever had. I agree with Listymonkey, I am going for a good time and who cares if there are less people there, it will just be more relaxed.

See yall on da beach!

- People don't like to admit it but there is a recession going on at the moment. The global economic slow down has caused less people to go away this year. With the amount of spending money you need in Ibiza it is not suprising that people cannot afford to go.
