I had to get this off my chest - my holiday sucked

Dr no love (or how I learned to stop raving and love the beach)

Writing off Ibiza isn’t big and isn’t clever but after my latest trip there I feel compelled to unload some of the vitriol that has built up inside of me over the last two summers. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m getting old – but at 30 years old there’s life in the old dog yet and it certainly doesn’t explain the extent of my disillusionment.

Ibiza has had it’s fans, and it’s detractors for years so why is it any different now? Well if there’s one sure fire way of ruining something then throw lots of money at it, make sure the people spending it have no scruples and most importantly, no taste. And Ibiza right now has got this little recipe in spades.

(I’ve read enough tedious magazines and so on to have a vague appreciation of the islands history but I cant be bothered to do any research to check my facts)

So in 5 easy steps here’s why it sucks:

1) where is the love? The clubs are full of preening people, pulling self conscious pouting faces to average durge. Either that or it’s stag and hen does. For ****s sake.
2) You cant blame the locals but is there anything that isn’t for sale? I mean a motorway?? To go 20 km??? the only thing causing traffic jams is the roadworks to build a motorway! the island has a rich and mixed history and a strong rural tradition but you get no sense of this – there’s the now immaculate but soulless Dalt Villa, the beaches with their identikit restaurant-bars or the rural restaurants that surrendered their authenticity when they doubled the prices and started selling “fusion” food.
3) Oh and then there’s the new money. Now I’ll confess to being a snob. But only in Ibiza would you get people rich enough and stupid enough to pay through the nose for second rate service at all the overpriced boutiques/ hotels/ shops/ restaurants/ beach bars and clubs. It’s a nice safe destination for people who lack the imagination to do anything better with their money and aren’t used to getting decent service. want to feel like a big fish in small pond? They say a fool and there money are easily parted – well they obviously went to Ibiza and watched idiots parting easily with their money. “But what about the celebrities”, they cry!! Well I’ll leave the DJs out of it – it’s their (very lucrative) livelihood. But Jade Jagger and every other no mark skin bag who adorns the cover of the sycophantic island press obviously has some deeprooted insecurity issues. They just love going back each year and seeing pages and pages of the same fawning articles about what amazing (worthless) contribution to the islands “culture” they have made that year. I also don’t know how else to explain the fact that each year approximinately 186 magazines are printed by various clubs (and then there’s even an English language island mag)!! Now even idiots that go to Ibiza are not demented enough to buy that **** so they must get paid for with advertising - which surely tells you how much of a frigging cash cow the average Ibiza tourist has become. The talentless “journalists” who contribute must think all their summer seasons have come at once.

Now I’m sure not everyone who goes to Ibiza earns six figures – so why does everywhere cost at least double what is reasonable??

4) I used to love the clubs. But that was the mid nineties. So why haven’t they changed for the better and moved with the times? Why is the music getting worse each year? Why hasn’t one season of music been memorable since 2003? One or two stand out tracks is a pretty poor return. The new space terrace? ARSE. **** me – talk about killing a place. Anyone who says the Sun**** terrace is just as good, obviously never went to the old one, or is too drug ****ed to know any better, or a ****. was it really worth it? All I can see that’s happened with the new covered terrace is that everyone comes later. They might get a bit more business overall on a Sunday – but everyone who goes there nowadays is a twat anyway. It’ll be over soon – the soul has gone.

5) the restaurants are ****ing awful. If I have to read one more article about how great such and such a place is when it’s just serving overpriced, heated up cat sick……….

a. Bambuda grove describes it’s food as Mediterasian!!! It’s even copywrite protected the term. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! What a bunch of ****s.
b. 70 euros per head for 2 courses of average “Morrocan” food at El Ayoun. While some daft bint parades clothes from the shop at the front while you’re trying to eat (just in case you were a fool with some money you wanted to part with). And a fat twat at the reception desk insists on getting a table at short notice cos he’ll “guarantee 3000 euro spend”.
c. Sa Capella – lovely setting. That’s it.
d. Any restaurant in the old town – even the small family places – 10 euros for a starter!!! Look inside yourselves – look what you’ve become.

Convince yourself it’s worth it – but it isn’t. I’ve yet to have a meal I couldn’t have cooked better. you want good food – go to Italy. Or even Greece (only joking - they suck at cooking).

Is there a side to the island that isn’t vulgar, overpriced and soulless? – probably. But I don’t want to have to hunt high and low to find it. Let’s face it – it’s not even that bloody beautiful. Try Sardinia. Croatia…..Cuba……..anywhere else.

Ibiza isn’t a hedonists paradise anymore. It’s like a hot Blackpool.

And now the clubs start to lose their appeal everyone starts looking for other reasons to go – just don’t try and tell me there are any.

can i suggest you come here in february and you'll find what you're looking for...........

Fair do's mate.

I see where you're coming from, though the people I go with, and, essentially the fun I have, always put the year when I have my, shall we say, 'Per niente' moment off.

I can't disagree with you on any points though with respect to prices and food!

A real shame you feel like that, I see it different....

I take it you won't be going again.....

but everyone who goes there nowadays is a twat

one less twat on the terrace then next year.....

Sorry you had such a bad experience. I can sort of relate to what you are saying. Ibiza has become a consumerist society, but then hasn't everywhere!
I wouldn't stop going to Ibiza because of this, just avoid the summer season. Hedonism does still exist in Ibiza, it is just harder to find.

well i was being deliberately provactive!

it just seems a shame that you can get a good community online but everyones more guarded nowadays when you get there.

yes - there will be one less twat on the terrace next year! (i say that now - i'll be there again next year, hating myself for it no doubt)

I do go witha group of friends too but the thing was thisyear taht we all felt the same - it was hard for the group spirit to lift us out of it as a result.

I've had some amazing holidays in ibiza, but last year was poor (well my second trip) although we originally put that down to the shocking electro music (we're all big fans of uplifting house (it's our age you see)). this year i came twice again and lightening struck twice - and it wasnt just the music. (see original post for details)

What capped it for me was going to Formentara on a friends (little) speed boat) while fat long haired fabio wannabe euro trash idiots also trapsed across on speedboats. it's not often that you get boat rage as it's not often i go on a boat but even i could tell that these twats pilot (??) boats like they are an extension of their cocks....! which they probably dont have.

Difficult to argue with much of what you've said. Unfortunately, Ibiza is a victim of its own success hence the outrageous prices and crap service etc.

That said, the punters (I'm one of them) keep going back year after year. I always have a great holiday. Admittedly, Ibiza is not as good as it was in the early to mid 90's but it is still cool. I find that I just need to put more thought and effort into having a good time.

interestingly, on this board in the mid 90's then general opinion was that it wasn't as good as the late 80's and the second summer of love.

At a risk of stirring up a storm in a tea cup.....

Certain nationalities spoiled it a little for me last year.... one word ARROGANCE - you can probably guess the rest....

I do get your points - Especially if it's a group downward spiral moan about everything situation...

I've been to Ibiza with friends that were having a good time initially, then one member of the group had a bad "situation" this resulted in a domino effect as one by one the rest of the group was dragged down by the first unhappy bunny....

It's tough to break, but you have to go back to basics, remind yourself of the things you love about the island and make the the most of the time you are there - ignore the irritations and enjoy yourself... it is a holiday (to quote buckley) FFS.....

Ok Grego - time to rationalise some of my rantings. i'm not here as a bastion of integrity though. just gutted i spent so much time and money there last month! hence my rather caustic tone.

- i'm a snob. and i lack class. i'm a hypocrit! i just like a bit more constraint than the brash consumerism thats on display

- my point about food is that there are all these articles about the "gastronomic excellence" of ibiza. but you can go anywhere in italy/ spain (not greece - they suck at cooking) and so on and eat really well for not much money. everywhere has it's expensive tourist traps - but ibiza has more than it's far share. and they justify whacking up the prices even more by investing in aesthetics rather than the menu or the service.

- ok it is beautiful in parts but it's looking a but rundown in parts. but if you wanted crystal clear water (i swallowed some at Salinas and was so sick that my blood hurt), rugged beauty or unspoilt towns then i could list 146 better places (per merit). i'm saying that the clubs were the key - and if you take that away there's places I (ME - i'm not saying you have to agree) would rather go. now if it's all electro (i hear that's waht kids like from a friend of mine iwth their finger on the nobof youth) then i regretably annouce my retirement and status as a dinasaur. (see you down the pub - i'm the one in the corner muttering obsenities)

- i wont check my facts - noones paying me for this!

- just cos we live in a capitalist society doesnt mean i enjoy being mugged my an entire island!! if it was so great we'd all live in Las Vegas and be done with it

If you need me i'll be in my mountain retreat.

I thought the service and value I experienced this year a great improvement from the past years. I felt more valued as a customer in the restaurants, the food of a higher quality and the service was definately with a smile.

And I went to many of the same restaurants i usually go to, so it was a direct comparison. I genuinely felt that the staff were great. And that was a a cross section of restaurants / eateries such as La Marina, Angelo's, Sa Trinxa, etc. Maybe I was very lucky, but I doubt it.

Space was crap. I went and didn't enjoy either the music or the atmosphere. So guess what, I left. But as everyone else seemed to be having a great time, i realised it was probably me that had changed. Or my lack of consumption.

I spent the days at Las Salinas and Bora Bora. And Gladly I felt the same way (8) 8)  - to be exact) as I always do.

I enjoyed Ibiza more this year than I ever have, and I think it was because I realised that what I enjoyed was not the same as what I thought I should enjoy. If that makes sense.

i got so invloved with my second rant that i think it timed out or something.

then i had to write a test message so i thought i'd put something that if it did appear would make me look like a complete a ss-clown
