When I lived in Kazakhstan, I drove one of these:
Niva.jpg

The indestructable 1992 Lada Niva 4x4. I had to sell it when I moved to Moscow 4 years ago though.

Back in the States, I had one of these:

Going for a cranberry red finish with pastel white top. Rollback Sunroof and Pursche wheels. Had the gearing converted too so it will cruise at 90mph at under 4000rpm!

Need to think about brakes now though

He who walks or takes the bus is hardly in a position to comment

The Niva wasn't pretty, but it was a utility car. Great for offroading in the mountains or driving up to the ski resort (and better at those tasks than most Western 4x4s).

I wasn't going to buy a car when I was living in Central Asia since a) I always had drivers at work, b) in the evening, taxis are dirt cheap and c) I never was quite sure when I was going to leave. But a friend was leaving town and sold it to me for a mere $1500. I basically treated it like a disposable car.... eventually offloaded it for $800.

I destroyed my rear suspension once offroading and got the whole thing replaced (stabilizer bar, shocks) for about $50. My friends who bought or imported fancier cars were forking out that much to replace a cracked mirror

Brave man! :P ;) They are nice. Last of the Mercs to have completely indestructable build quality. When they first came out in 1990ish and my old man worked at Merc he got me a ride in one (500sl) on a track from a Merc test driver who proceeded to thrap the absolute hell out of it  :D
