Top Businesses
There were few surprises last week as the Diario de Ibiza produced its annual list of the top 1,000 businesses on the island. The results from 2005 show that although the construction sector may be in decline this year, in 2005 it was without doubt the strongest sector within Ibiza. Seven of the top ten companies were linked to the construction sector, with the building companies Ibiza Nueva SA, IbiHogar SA and Marson Ibiza SL finishing the year in first, third and seventh places respectively. Only the hotel chains Fiesta Hotels & Resorts SL, Residencial Marina SL (last year's top ranked company) and Grupo Empresas Alonso Mari SA managed to break the stranglehold of the construction companies. The joint top ten companies had a total turnover of €270,565,089 in 2005.
Ibiza has a total of 10,194 registered companies, 1,157 (11.3 per cent) in the construction sector, 3,536 (34.6 per cent) in the commercial sector, 1,457 (14.2 per cent) in the catering sector, 591 in the hotel sector, 404 estate agents and 199 in the transport sector.

(and talking about Grupo Empresas Alonso Mari SA, it was announced the other day that they will be in charge of the exploitation of the ibiza nueva port which includes el divino..... so its future depends on them)

 the number 18 of pacha mag included an article called "the empire builders" in which pepita from el portalón/can den parra/la ventana/navila in dalt vila announced "we've found a new venue nearby that we're transforming into a ten-bedroom hotel. we plan to open in 2010"..... too soon to reveal the secret location but here is a (quite revealing) picture instead:

(this remains me of last winter when a member of this forum, who owns an apartment above cafe del mar, was asking if they were filling in that useless eyesore of a hole in the ground behind el cano apartments. the answer now would be yes..... with cement)

 es meu bar in the west end (lately renamed as la cueva) has turned into kedamos :!:

it opened recently.....

 apparently gatecrasher and dave pearce have parted company after two years as joint promoters on tuesdays in eden. slinky is likely to return..... along with a possible shock move of tidy boys to eden aswell :!:

in related news, apparently ibiza residents (with jon constantine and dermot c) will no longer host the back room on tuesdays in eden giving way to an indie brand with dj sets from various bands (belle and sebastian, etc).....

(in connection with that, one of the main tidy owners has bought the slinky brand)

 capone in the west end reopened for the winter at the beginning of december but had to close shortly after because it was empty :!:

the west end is not easy this winter as theres a lot of competition (around 20 music bars open).....

 nathan seal has quit as promoter for garlands at eden :!:

even if in the last years it became san antonio's 2nd biggest night, he has decided to do his own things (including the new bar viva) rather than work for anyone else.....
