General annoyances

If you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip... and no 10% is NOT a good tip!

In the UK, it is... (or at least it's what's expected)

I hate eating out with people who don't want to tip, as it makes you look a right tight cnut. I organised a retirement do for a guy at work - 30 of us out at a restaurant and I think I managed to get about £10 out of them in total to hand over as a tip. I was almost going to go round them again looking for more, but (fortunately) person beside me managed to persuade me that wasn't a good idea. I would have probably got involved in a big drunken argument.

Yeah we have actually all been there!

When you bosh and start coming up - your body notices the toxins and immediately decides to evacuate without warning.

I always wonder where all that STUFF comes from. I never got it at the start of my career (early 00s), but people used to say 'it's like the world falling out your arse' and they weren't far wrong. It's when I started (legally) on mephedrone I first experienced it.

Drugs - probably as good for you as colonic irrigation.

I'm of the view that 'legal' alternatives are worse than the real deal.

Meph is hateful stuff.

wiping your arse and getting a bit of shirt stuck between the paper and your bum hole.

shops that over-charge you and make up the prices as they go along. i will name the shop: it's the newsagents under ubs near liverpool st. makes me wild with anger.

twitter. specifically rio ferdinand on twitter.

Or wiping your arse and putting your finger through the toilet paper, thus making the dreaded brown ballerina.

When you can't stop your stomach rumbling in a quiet room.

I know this is more of a North American thing, but I can't stand people who don't tip!

If you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip... and no 10% is NOT a good tip!
This is a North American argument, Meryl.

10% is a perfectly good tip here. Even generous.

In the UK, it's in the 10-12.5% range. Not like the 15-20% in the US (and Canada?)

Many parts of Europe you just leave a couple of Euros as service is already included in the prices. This is the best option.

On my general annoyances list, I'd put the tipping culture in the US!

Alongside that is the addition of sales tax separately in shops.

When I go to a store or restaurant, I want to look at the price tag or menu and know the grand total of what I'm going to pay. No surprises, no add-ons... just give me a straightforward honest price!

another one:

ME people. Those that somehow turn every conversation into something about themselves. Im not talking about forums I mean in real life. You know those types of ppl , that will always end a conversation because they've gone off on one about themselves or their partner and everyone's bored to death . The worst is when they'll act interested and ask you something like an opinion on something and then totally steamroll you before you've finished and they're on to something else , like they had no intention of listening to a word you were going to say.
This basically relates to 2 people I have met , 1 is harmless just very annoying , the other is a totall kn0bjockey. He gets off on being particularly vulgar in front of people. Almost like he's coked up all the time but he doesnt do it. He'll go into intricate detail about 1 night stands with the girl sitting at the same table in front of their friends or just say really sick stuff/jokes just to offend people. I dont understand it but he must have some serious issues

Hangovers.

And having to tip at all. They are already paid for their jobs. Why should I pay for someone to bring me a drink or two, and my meal, to the table? That's not going above & beyond the call of duty to deserve a tip.

Okay, in the UK, what is an acceptable tip?

I do say generally 10% but it all depends on what you think that person deserves and what time of night is was....

I once had a table of 10-12 people and they gave me a thirty quid tip....other times ive had the same number of people and got nothing, but thats because some people are so f**kin tight its a joke :spank:

This might sound like I'm contradicting my post above but, having worked in the service industry, I disagree.

In countries where tipping is the norm, it's usually because service staff are paid less with the understanding that they'll get tips. That's especially true in North America - in the US, some waiters don't even make minimum wage in official salary because tips are considered part of their pay (and they've got to declare most of them for tax purposes!)

What I advocate is that restaurants just bake that difference into the price of the food, pay their wait staff normally, and then we can all forget this tipping nonsense
