General annoyances

well acshuallllllyyyyyyyyyy

you never use the singular for a sports team - it's a rare exception to the rule
That's what people do now, esp. UK press.
But it's not an exception. It's a mistake.
Manchester United Football Club. Club = singular. Therefore, it is more proper to write "Manchester United was defeated"

Enlighten me, what does REEM stand for?

I seem to be the only person unaware.
It's old slang in the States, but I'm not sure it means the same thing.

Usually used when someone got yelled at/disciplined.

"Joey got reemed by his parents for showing up late."

WRONG! back of the class

the plural is used to reflect the fact it's a collective noun

Doesnt stand for anything...

Some stupid essex scrote, with no more than one brain cell uses this word, as, what i can only describe as the worst descriptive word ever

You look Reem
You smell Reem

Im sure you get the idea now lol

People use it now after the show but nobody used it before

The scriptwriters basically made it up, used it CONSTANTLY and now its taking off as in he does reem parties, clothes etc :spank:

Corrected for you Emma. Normal non-luvvie surburban numpties, being asked to act terrible scripts.

Wrong!

With that logic, any collective noun would get a plural.
The class were listening to the teacher
The team were playing on the pitch
The nation were going to war.

All wrong!

Im agreeing with Ollie on this mate. It might be different the other side of the Pond but in the Queens English it were imo.

A Team is made up from more than 1 person as is a nation and a class so they get a plural

No no no. I'm protecting the Queen's English. You young Brits are corrupting it!

Case in point: "were" in your sentence above should be "is" :!:
